Who's better: Ben Finegold--has been rated higher than Garry Kasparov Every player since the mid 80s other than Magnus--has not been rated higher than Garry Kasparov
@@zaydengestures7275 Kasparov in 1979 was 16 and already Grandmaster strength. Finegold in 1979 was 9 and fartblaster strength. Kasparov won Banja Luka 2 pts clear of the pack ahead of Andersson, Petrosian, Adorjan and Browne. Finegold watched Karpov and Timman. Mainly etcetera.
Hey... I was in Montreal at that tournament and spoke to Michail Tal who had to wave his body guards off when I approached him! Lol. Didn't see you Ben. You must have been Short
You've done one of these videos on Bent Larsen and now one on Timman. When you see either of these two featured in a replay, they almost always are on the losing side.
Did people really argue about who was the world champion in the 1990s? My recollection of that time is that everybody knew that the world champion was Kasparov or whoever could beat him, and then Kramnik or whoever could beat him. Karpov and Timman played the 1993 FIDE world championship match because they were the most successful players in the candidates cycle except for Short: Timman lost to Short in the candidates final and Karpov in the semi. (The other semi-finalist was Yusupov, but he'd already lost to Timman in that semi-final.)
Here's a great Dutch chess documentary called "Love for Wood" (with English subs): ruclips.net/video/E48r-JTSAVM/видео.html where you can see a lot of Timman live, philosophizing about chess with other players. He seems like a really nice guy, very balanced for a chess player :) Also IMO it's one of the very few truly good chess documentaries, heartily recommended! Otherwise, great lecture about one of my favourite chess players. As always, thanks Ben :D
6:15 I'll argue with you about the those guys being the 4 most talented players in 1991. Kamsky is the one who doesn't fit. Kamsky was only 16-17 yrs old then, and Ivanchuk was unquestionably a superior talent at that time.
I'm a huge fan of his books and have had all of them, even though I'm a low level player. The level of analysis is super high in eg "The Art of Analysis", but if you are serious about studying the games, they will definitely help you. If you're not so bothered and just want to see good games, consider the book on the Fischer-Spassky match, the one on the Kasparov Karpov matches or Tinman's Titans. Great writer, interesting analysis.
Timman was way ahead of his time. It wasn't until the last decade that Hans Niemann, and later Carlsen, began to emulate his magnificent hair.
Carlsen had it before Buttbead neimann did, cmon bro
He always looked like a man from the 1700s.
Two words for you. John Nunn.
Ben is improving: with this pace by 2024 he'll achieve the goal of an introduction longer than the rest of the lecture
Hey, it's my favourite player, Jan Timman
Hey, it’s my favourite player, Ben Finegold

Best chess content around. Real meat and potatoes stuff. Turns out actually understanding the game gives you a bit of an advantage.
Well he's vegan so no meat
Ben you do such a good job at this. Keep them coming. You’re the best etc but mainly etc 😂
According to his Wiki, Kasparov wasn't even rated until 1979. Making Ben higher rated than him for 4 years.
Ridiculous if true

Clearly Ben wins on longevity

One of the absolute greats. Thanks for the lecture.
Nice games, Timman was one of my favorite players and authors.
Looks like you had a good lunch today... Nice video, thank you.
Several, probably.
levy to ben: "can you please take care of my dogs?"

You know you've reached the top when you don't have to worry about sauce stains on your shirt anymore.
a very American sartorial approach
This was really great. Thanks for that.
Great Shirt Stains of the Present
That game against Kasparov was pretty awesome
I love your lectures
Great choice of games!
That second game against Kasparov was utterly beautiful
Jan the man
As a ruy lopez player this was a fun one to watch

This is definitely one of the Jan Timman lectures of all time.
Also, Shout! is really effective on grease stains, especially if applied promptly.
Hello. do you know if Timman will be any tournament i the near future??

I'm still curious which chess books are on the shelf.
And we'll let the computers figure it out? 14...Qh4 15. Re1 Qxf2+ 16. Kh1 Qh4+
17. Kg1 Qh2+ 18. Kf1 Qh1+ 19. Ke2 Qxg2+ 20. Kd3 Rd8+ etc. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Yeah, Ivanchuk was #2 in the world in 1991. Kamsky was top-ten in 1991, though, despite "only" being 2650.
What is Jan timman best book to buy for 1300-1500 player like me
Probably a book by Bobby Fischer, but I doubt Timman would have you take it off his hands for any reasonable price.

Ah... The good old days when the Dutch government took less than 100% of your earnings! Good times!

IMHO, not really the perfect game to present - a case when Timman ran into the full force of USSR prep....
