Thy can't just say "this is not you" to someone without farther check such as if you have any other form of photo ID, driving licence and so on...they should crosscheck as much as possible before they just say this is not you..but Ethiopian bureaucracy is known for finding obstacles only, never a solution...they are rude and unprofessional from their dress code to their attitude...they lack basic understanding of how first impression means to people during their visit to Ethiopia...I remember my first visit after 25 years abroad (I am even Ethiopian) I had similar experience at the airport and all I wanted to do after the experience was just turn around and go back "home"...nothing after that could reconcile my short stay in Addis...I have since found it hard to even contemplate going back to Ethiopia unless something so so important forces me to do so...my memory of everything Ethiopia is the overwhelming wall of bureaucracy...everywhere you go "አይቻልም""..I can't even describe the body language....😴

I once experienced subtle racism in Hong Kong starting from the airport years ago.. (I am a black man from South Africa). But I'll tell something, I am not going to let that stop me going there should I want to.. I am happy to be inside my skin even if it means dying somewhere far away from home for it..
@@dochere-bolelwang I see what you mean but in my case it wasn't racism or sort but like I said Ethiopia is still my home and still have families and what not, and will still go back in case of family situations but it is just not a place where I want do anything given the bureaucratic nature of the culture...there is just something in the culture where authorities feel more of a slave master towards the public and every office you go they just make you feel like a beggar rather than a client

I am sorry, and I really mean it.. Let me reveal something that I am not comfortable doing on a platform that is not mine.. Here in my country South Africa, there's a feeling that white government officials tend to be more helpful and much more professional when assisting a person compared to our own black brothers and sisters, that includes the police among others.. I am not saying all black government officials are not helpful and professional.. Personally I have seen that.. Why this is so there's no easy answer. As blacks we need to face up to our realities.. We tend to be easily rude and unhelpful towards our own people, while very much accommodating to other races especially the whites..
So happy to see Black Americans in Ethiopia ❤ I hope you love the country and the culture and feel welcome! We’re all one at the end of the day and Ethiopia is home to all Black Americans ❤❤❤

🥲. I’m sorry you guys have such a difficult time immigrating to/visiting the USA. Actually, the first time my husband came with me to the U.S. they took him for questioning in an interrogation room. It’s not right.
It happens all the time, even in African countries.. I am black but the few times I have travelled to Mozambique from South Africa to try a new business venture was quite challenging at the border post.. Years ago in Hong Kong, I was singled out and frisked by airport security who found nothing wrong but gave no reason for doing so.. A family friend who used to travel to another African country from South Africa by work once told me that paying a bribe at that African country airport was a given.. He told us that the airport officials even go as far as begging you if you don't understand, telling you that they too had families to feed.. Another friend once told me that in the UK years ago, his clothes were thrown all over the floor before he was put back on the plane back to South Africa..

I experience similar in Kenya on a tour. I have no problem with security at it's highest but I was single out just bc I didn't smile or l looked to stern. Good thing our tour guide stepped in to vouch or it could've gotten ugly.

Hi there. Ethiopia's government should do something about it. I had the same experience in ADDIS. It looks like the airport guys do the bureaucracy deliberately to get some tips and to spoil the reputation of Ethiopia.Huge problem for Ethiopia's tourism.
Problem is they're underpaid so they hustle.
They asked her to pay for visa using debt card Mastercard or visa or cash in dollar
She wanted to use other American payment methods that they don't accept , how's that anyone's fault
She should hv debt or Mastercard or cash on her when she travels , $60 is not that expensive, how can she travel with nothing on her across continent. 😮

It’s sad to say but they really need some serious customer service training in Bole Airport. I too experienced unpleasant attitudes a couple of times when I visited.
Not just the airport every service sector worker needs to be trained. Fr it’s upsetting

I’m Ethiopian, last time I visit I went to the kiosk to show my passport and travel visa, I follow the instructions and wait in line. A random man came out of nowhere from behind clapping and yelling at me in Amharic. I think he was telling me to get out of that line, maybe because I am Ethiopian he thought he could bully me like a local. I ignored him and the people who actually worked in that kiosk looked confused and they told me to ignore him and come.
The problem is simple people who have any position of power want to abuse it. I’ve had worse experiences with the workers at Kenyan airport. They work professionally to bully foreigners to get bribes.
Bad treatment at the airport can negatively impact Ethiopian tourism which it seems that is prioritized now a days to get dollars. So it might change soon hopefully.
They should let her in with out paying for her visa ? The manager literally went out of his way asking random ppl to help her pay for her visa 60 dollar so that she can pay them back with "transfer money,PayPal" , she had nothing on her not even 60 dollar cash
That's extremely weird , the fact that the manager went out there with her begging ppl to pay for her is literally unimaginably supportive , he didn't need to do that

You are right.. I am planning on visiting Ethiopia from South Africa hopefully before the first quarter of the next year is out.. As someone who hasn't been to that part of the continent, already I am sending out feelers by way of following Ethiopia-based content creators, to have an idea of what is possible and to experience once in Addis Ababa especially.. I also hope to visit the Ethiopian Consulate/Embassy here for further input especially in light of the fact that I am one of those who refused to vaccinate for Covid-19 when this was unjustly mandated in my view, by countries across the globe three years ago..

Yes the inconveniences are unfortunately expected for Addis, still developing country, like you just can’t pay with cash app or Venmo or any other online payment. So true.., we need to learn from each other instead of shouting at each other on the continent and even across the continents. I keep thinking that if the Boers (Dutch descendants) of South Africa had been open to learning from the indigenous people they found on the southern tip of Africa, the history here would have been that of success and progress for all from the get-go. Great Interview Princess ! I'm also saddened about her experience with Ethiopian Immigration. I too had an ugly customer experience issues with them and they are infuriating to say the least. They need training in modern customer service training in the sector. Clear and consistent paperwork requirements ( cash/no cash, return ticket or not issues) must be shared with their stakeholders. Enforcing them is another issue. They simply need to do a better job. I hope she was able to take away positive experiences to make up for negative ones by "not-sufficiently trained officials".

I would strongly advise against comparing different countries. Instead, I encourage you to focus on contributing your part toward the development of Africa. By living and working in and supporting the continent, you can help foster growth and progress in meaningful ways by contributing your share.
We weren’t comparing in terms of one being better or worse. We were pointing out the differences and similarities. This can be useful for someone thinking about relocating.

In UK, you can get a letter from the passport office confirming your passport details.
It helps a lot of none European decent travellers. Once you show letter is confirming passport details the Immigration let you in country
If she gets married, what will be her legal status? Maybe she able to get a Ethiopian Green ID Card which can renewal yearly.

This happened when I first arrived in the U.S. They took my fingerprints, and the officer looked at me, then at the computer, and called over all the managers and supervisors. One of the managers said, ‘It’s common for Indians and Nigerians to have these kinds of fingerprints, but this is unusual for an Ethiopian man.’ I looked at my fingers and thought, ‘Wow, I’m different! 😂😂😂 Are they going to deport me?’ After a few tense moments, I was cleared and became free on the land of the free. And so, it happened. No matter where we come from, we can enjoy this journey.

Regarding the passport issue where she was told it wasn’t her, I experienced something similar when I entered the U.S. This is not unusual and can happen anywhere.

I was in Ethiopia in November 2023. In the airport the officer marked my entry November November 2022. I stayed for 3 months then I went to immigration to extend my stay by another 3 months, only to be told you are an illegal😂. You stayed for a year illegally, and you need to leave. I was shocked. Then I realized that idiot put my entry date 2022 instead of 2023. Woo it was too much ! They finally agreed. Ethiopia is a country where an stupid police has more power and money than a medical doctor 😂

I once had my car battery stolen during the night where I live here in South Africa.. I went to my police station to report the theft early in the morning in case I might find out who did it.. I was stunned when the officer who was recording the case turned to a colleague of his next to him, asking what he should record the theft as.. I am being honest..

I had the same issue at the airport with the passport, they asked me if it was really me or did I play with my passport. Dude was a hater and did not want to believe I was an American. Ethiopia can be a great place for a quick visit. Some people are cool and others are not. Most Ethiopians have never seen a Black American in person, only on TV. Many Other Africans and jamaicans are looked down on. If they know you are American the treatment is good, but if they think you are from another part of Africa or Jamaican, the disrespect is strong...

They treat Ethiopian diaspora the same way so don’t take it personally. Just be respectful but stand up for yourself. Eventually they will give up. I’m Ethiopian and experience similar treatment at Ethiopian and Kenyan airport.
I am sorry that your friend had to go thru that at the airport. I also had a mishap with the services at bole international airport just yesterday. Its become a common thing.
I suspect that the reason they stopped her even though her passport was clearly hers and ontop of that being a US passport is because she looks like an Ethiopian-American even though shes not.
Through the 7 years I have lived in Ethiopia as a half- ethiopian, my general experienece living here and getting services has been difficult due to me being "a forigener" even though i am partially Ethiopian. Countless times I was told by workers, service providers, teachers, RIDE drivers that i will not be given a "special treatment" because i am a forigener.
Which is odd, because i never ask to be prioritized over others, they only perceive me as wanting that 🤦🏻♀️ my observation is that people in Addis often think "forigeners" like me are living better than them in their own country thus they become envious and try to harm you.
There are many possibilities as to why your friend experienced what she did at the airport and i definitely cant read people's minds, however; what I personally think happened is that they thought your friend was an Ethiopian diaspora and automatically didn't like her because she's got a more powerful passport compared to their own.

Yes exactly, I’m Ethiopian diaspora. When I was leaving one security lady looked at my passport and me very strangely, then input something in the system. When I got to my lay over in Europe, they told me to visit my airline for security purposes. The lady who worked there just looked at me, my passport and told me I’m good and go along my way. I suspect the lady at the Ethiopian airport was mad/jealous I am diaspora and flagged me for something. I also have a name that shows my identity and we have tribalism issues. Anyways just ignore it and try to be modest/humble and enjoy your time when you visit.

Just something I wanted to add, the tribalism issue exists from every ethiopian ethnicity I noticed living here 🤔 for example my friend who is tigrai got rejected from the Ethiopian Airlines interview even though her CV was accepted and her background was fine and she was more than qualified. The reason for that being when the interviewer asked to list her name among other girls applying, when he wanted to take her grandfather's name apparently it sounded tigrai.
She told me the interviewer got furious and told her to get out of there and she "did not pass any test (height test). All because she is from Tigray and the interviewer most probably Oromo according to my friend.
I personally cant identify the different ethnicities by name or looks and I am definitely not saying the Oromo ethnicity is racist, I am saying people of different ethnicities ALL can be EQUALLY racist.
So just as I told my friend when she was feeling bad about the whole situation, I will say to you too that don't take the bad experience to heart my dear.
There are people who suck everywhere regardless of their bloodline/ background or skincolor. But their behavior doesn't define us as people, it doesn't mean we are incompetent or less worthy of the excellent treatment human to human that we deserve 🫂

African american women is me favorite, My experience dating african american women has been a kind of challenging, but I'm glad that you guys are there.Hopefully, it will make you guys to be and learn to be cone a better person . I totally agree. She sound like she’s entitled, any country you visit they have a right to verify your passport and it’s responsibility to pay your entry visa.
Yes, verifying a person’s identity is normal security procedure. However, where I believe the Ethiopian staff went wrong was passing her passport around to several others before bringing out the manager or asking for additional id. It took 2 hours she said. Also she was aware she had to pay for a visa. She just didn’t bring cash. She admitted that was her fault.
Yes but some are playing games they did the same thing to my relative and said her passport looks fraudulent and it’s not her in the photo. It is a normal passport and she looked the same. They are looking for someone afraid who will fall for their game then they can extort for something like dollars. It’s not common but yes it happens to some foreigners esp Ethiopian diaspora and other types who aren’t ferenji.
Like in kenya people are always in hurry walking very fast you cannot find kenyan.wasting time always in hurry doing something to make ends meet.
What you both didn't realise is that alot of people do travel through Ethiopia moreover it doesn't matter what kind of passport one holds one may travel from and to having committed crime so they are right to make sure they check everyone. Having said that I am very sorry for the inconvenience you had with regards to visa payment ( usd ). It kinda shows you haven't travelled much to 3rd world countries ;-) I have travelled over 124 countries cos I used to work for MSF trust me there are far worst places than Addis/Ethiopia. You said, "Why would you try to enter Ethiopia from the USA with a fake passport?" It is not personally direct to you. Regardless of who you are and where you come from, they have to verify you cause that is what immigration and customs do. These days, people come from all corners of the world for good and bad purposes. As long as they are not picking or discreminate on you, you have to admire them for trying to do their job the best way possible with the limited resources they have. I am glad you had a positive experience overall.
@@gebriye1 Yes of course. The interesting thing is that leaving the U.S., on that same passport, no one stopped her because she didn’t look like the photo. Also, the time they spent passing the passport around just delayed her further. They probably should have asked for additional proof of ID sooner. However, I agree with you. I am happy to hear that airport staff are at least trying to do their part to keep the country safe.
@@gebriye1 Also, the new U.S. passports are much harder to forge. Look up new U.S. “Next Generation Passport” on Google. It would be highly unlikely that her new passport was fake and the U.S. government didn’t catch it on her way out of the country.
@princesslivingfree As you most probably know, nothing is impossible to fake. As much as the authorities are trying to make it hard, the other side (criminals) are trying even harder to fake it. On top of that, the immigration might not know that, or even if they know , they can not overlook their procedures depending on another countries safety measures. The reason their is immigration and check points on both sides is that if one side misses something, the other might be able to catch it. Them takeing two hours to verify, which is totally unacceptable. I know from frequent travel, although I haven't personally come across measures delays, I know their time concept is not as good as it should be. They are not well versed in timely service.
Side note. Please be careful when you go around, especially at night by yourself. Pick pockets, cellphones, purse snatchers, and muggers are not uncommon. In the process of stilling, they might even hurt you. Enjoy.

I am looking forward to seeing the changes. I usually travel to places like Arbaminch, Kuriftu, and other new resorts that opened up recently. The airport staff are new and inexperienced. They were replaced since PM Abiy came to power.

You are right, Ethiopia should protect their borders. However, the airport agents just kept passing her passport around without doing any further investigation. They could have brought out the manager or asked for other proofs of id a lot sooner. She was there for 2 hours!
Somethings call for basic intelligence. First thing this is a woman, a foreigner who had travelled all the way from the US to visit Ethiopia. Where does criminality step in here? The fact that a visitor is coming to your country is good enough for any human host to make the visit as smooth as possible.

You using a color to identify her is a type a American is unnecessary when her physical appearance speaks for her already. Therefore she is just American, otherwise you would be considered a racist for specifying her color race which we know was used to oppress us. Teach Africans that we are Americans and that we reject that caste system created to oppress us. There is value to just being American and we must accept that and stop othering ourselves from our homeland.
