I loved hearing how much everyone wanted to meet Kenny. About 13 years ago when I was in kindergarten, I was lucky enough to meet him (although I didn't know how lucky at the time). Kenny would often have a few kids sing backup for him at his Christmas show and my Aunt worked at a theater he performed at so my brother, two of my cousins, and I sang backup for silent night and a few others. Kenny was very nice to all of us, we still watch our DVD every year around Christmas!

The end of the video, the insights Austin brings to the entirety of his music career so far, is, I believe, the most important distinction between the acapella music community and the rest of the music industry as a whole. The artists that head the acapella music community interact with fans on a much more personal, deeply felt level because of their deeper connection to the music. There is NOTHING between them and the music, no instruments, no tracks, to machines...nothing. And, I think it's the same for them and their fans because of that. The story Austin told about the first time fans helped the band, the first time they allowed themselves to LET the fans help, was amazing. It's hard for anyone to ask for help, it's almost as hard to accept that help once you've asked for it, but it's even harder to accept help that is unasked for...no matter how much it's needed. To accept that people, their fans, WANTED to help, to ALLOW them to help, to understand that the fans, because of the little things they did, felt more a PART of what the band was becoming...that had to be a tough moment. But, they did it. The accepted the fans as part of the whole experience, and included them in what Home Free IS.
That's the important part. It's not just about the bands that spearhead acapella, though they are integral to what happens. They, the bands, are the tip of the spear in a groundswell of support, of people who are a part of something beautiful, wonderful, and supportive. And, the bands themselves never let us forget it, either. They incorporate that feeling into just about everything they do. They remind us constantly that they couldn't do what they do without the support we provide them, the love we give to them, the energy we return to them. It's become a circle that feeds upon itself, ever renewing, constantly there. You don't find that just anywhere.
Great interview, Jacob. Very thought provoking, obviously. Thank you for taking the time to do this, and so many others.

Indeed I found it interesting that Austin recalls the effort and dedication Chris Rupp had made .... in Chris leaving the Band HE CONCEIVED AND NURTURED & HELD TOGETHER ...... only to reset into a three tenors a capella group ..... just belies logic ! His farewell at the last year's touring STATED HE WAS LEAVING to pursue PRODUCTION WORK. I wish Chris Rupp the best, though can't understand his wanting to revert to minimized choral strength ?!? Wonderful interview. Jacob you are most excellent in this process. I love the flow and easiness of these things. Of course Austin and Tim have to be the easiest people to talk with. I've watched Tim and Austin's twice. Kudos Jacob 😊!

    Excellent interview! Learned a LOT.
On a RUclips video of when HF won the Sing-Off (actual TV episode), a commenter complained that HF should not have won b/c they were a professional group. After listening to Austin describe the steps and hard work it takes *after* winning to succeed, it really was beneficial HF knew as much as they did (by being a professional group) that helped HF to be successful. Austin's critique of reality shows was spot on. (And, no, I do not think that being a professional group should have precluded HF from winning. Being a professional group just gave the edge of understanding the music industry and the hard work involved.)

I had to laugh, when Austin was asked what 2 or 3 artists he'd love to work with and he mentioned Travis Tritt, Garth and Dolly, I was hoping he would have included Jacob, maybe next interview?

I am listening in May of 2024. Austin is leaving Home Free (on very good terms). Austin is married about a year. He and his wife want a change. They want to plan a family. They have a plan to continue Austin's music (they have many connections). Many of us are wishing Austin and his wife great success.
