Fun fact for those who don't know. The average height for Japanese men is 5'7 while Gojo is 6'1. The average height for Japanese women is 5'2 while Marin is 5'5. Juju is roughly 4ft. The entire cast is both above and below there countries average heights but it's especially noticeable when Gojo is standing next to anyone other then Marin.
Yeah, it doesn't get a lot of focus, but compared to most everyone he interacts with, Gojo is an absolute giant.

@@KingsBard The tail gag is likely one of the only times where I found the "poisonous black sludge" cliche to have a valid explanation as Tohru's tail seems to regrow when she eats it so it's technically poop.

On Juju thinking Marin "is an annoying bitch after all," is due to her misunderstanding Marin's reaction. She didn't realize Marin was happy he's single, and thought she was laughing at him for being single. Which wouldn't be cool, but mostly goes to show that Juju isn't the most socially adept person. Also, in this episode, I think you kind of see Juju at her very worst, because she's upset at having been seen naked (though that was more her fault than his, since she was a stranger in his house. It was probably mostly the grandpa's fault though, for assuming she was Gojo's friend and letting a stranger in the house). So, I'll just say, please keep an open mind toward her, and don't judge her by her worst moment. I know I've done some pretty stupid and shitty things in my worst moments, too.
But even with Juju's rough introduction, I can't help loving this episode purely for Marin's self-awareness and the moment she realized she had fallen for Gojo. Because she's such a sweet, silly bean.
For someone who says "try to look the best in others and be positive" she sure is immediately indifferent to Juju after just a brief period of meeting the character.
@@mbonkeden Sometimes, either a person in real life, or a character in a show can hit perfectly wrong with their behavior, and instantly trigger your dislike. That is not a poor showing on her part, it's just a bit of personality clash in what you see of her here. Don't be a dick, dude. I was simply giving my opinion, not inviting criticism (undeserved, as I see it) of her as a person.

I don't think I've ever processed that scene as her thinking she was laughing at Gojo. It does make some sense though.

I don't mind tsunderes, WHEN they play with meta... but characters who are honest with themselves/eachother is so refreshing.
I love that Marin didn't get mad when Gojo shot down that they weren't dating. It seems like a more normal reaction and she saw it as a chance to get closer to hime
Why would she get mad? She only just discovered her feelings for him, and they actually didn't have a proper date yet. He only said how it is, there's no reason to be mad. And besides, he didn't say that he wouldn't date in the future, only that he didn't in the past. And the information she drew from that was totally to her favour, so she was actually quite happy about it.
Marin is like the perfect anti-trope character.
Her world view and energy just steamrolls any nonsense that might come along.
Misunderstandings? Ain't got time for that.
Falls in love with the boy first.
Doesn't assume anything bad about the boy.
This whole situation took a romcom trope seriously, creating tension.. and then applied Gojo and Marin's sensibilities to it and completely defused it.
The moment happens, we freak out and go all "No, this can't be happening!" and sure enough, it isn't! The trope train derails and we go on a completely different plot.
This is why Marin is one of the best characters in anime. Not just because of her personality and such, but how it improved the direction of the anime overall.

Also Juju gets much better. I didn't even mind her in this part because Gojo's wholesomeness is just so contagious. I get impervious to anger.

The intro of Juju is tough. We resolved the time crunch arc, the show needs some additional conflict and Gojo not wanting to make anything for anyone other than Marin is in character. You could have Marin be the one to convince Gojo but then you get less of a convincing “will they/won’t they” on the group cosplay.
It's so refreshing seeing an anime girl who is so in tune with her emotions she accepts her own feelings and pursues them instead of going into denial or avoiding the person she likes.
It's why I hate most romance anime because the characters deny past the point of believability because the plots are all the same, blue ball the romance until the final 5 minutes of the final episode so we only get basic repeated shit in them all and almost nothing unique in these shows.
The actual romance and relationships are the interesting part not playing will they won't they for 3 seasons because we know they will every single time.
Judging people prematurely is not a bad thing, but a normal reaction. Whether you listen to your own unconscious judgment or not is a different thing.
I _think_ Marin's reaction to "anything inappropriate" was because that was really the first time that the possibility of "inappropriate" things entered her head. Which is where the later "what if we did, though" comes in. She's confronting that she likes Gojou, and considering what exactly that implies about what she wants.
I think that Juju's blackmail attempt comes out of a place of desperation after feeling supremely jerked around. She finds a guy she thinks is a big-time professional costume maker (based solely on the quality of his work). She goes to his shop, only to get caught in a sudden downpour and totally soaked; she's then basically shoved into a bath by a senior citizen insisting she warm up or she'll catch a cold. Then she gets walked in on, insulted (mistaken for a child), and seen even worse. Then instead of the costumes she came to see, she gets sidelined by a Hina doll display, and then she's told that it was all for nothing, that this guy doesn't even do commissions! She basically panicked. We're fortunate that basically by the time Marin and Juju are explaining "Flower Princess Blaze!!" to him, Gojou's already decided to make the costumes, and her poorly thought out plan doesn't need to come up again.
The relationship chart I think is heavily based on the one in the classic _Cardcaptor Sakura_ , where the protagonist and her rival also crushed on the guy who wound up with the protagonist's older brother. (Of course, that rival was also a guy, and wound up with the protagonist.)
Not to mention, most miss the fact that after episode 8, Juju is practically in full tsun mode whenever Eventual Best Couple are involved.
I often wonder what the author might have meant for it. It was odd, yet I never had a problem since it really resolved it self within a minute, so it was fine.
As you said to, learn more later about her dreams too, and being embarrassed earlier, it works out better

The interaction was weird with Gojo, but I do like that JuJu immediately apologized and realized she was judging/having assumptions about Marin too quickly. Good for Gojo though, he gets to make more outfits and hopefully make more friends. Thanks for the reaction.

Maybe not something wrong with her character itself per se, but the act of initially trying to blackmail Gojo to get what she wants is _very shitty_
To be fair she is only really bad for like a couple of minutes in this one. She has like 1 maybe 2 scenes where she comes off as trash, which is the black mail that never gets brought up again, and the stalking which also never gets brought up again. Even her judgment towards Marin makes some sense. There are a lot of women who cosplay for the attention and have no actual attachment to any of the series they cosplay from. Marin then comes in and is a super over the top gyaru girl (she literally jumps directly on top of Juju and way invades her personal space right away), who kinda screams attention seeker if you don't know her. As the conversation goes on Juju realizes Marin is extremely respectable, and is an otaku. Then promptly apologizes for misjudging her.

Juju this episode reminds me of the girl in Horimiya that the student counsel president dates. Feels like at first the mangaka wrote a trope character that realllly pisses people off, then were like NOPE I don't want this and changes them after.
I felt the same way as you did after this episode. I was like, why, maybe this show is just going downhill from here, with marin carrying.
I'm just gonna say, Marin's friendship with Grandpa gets even more wholesome and adorable. It's real cute!

Not anymore, but for most of the 2000s, yes.
Nowadays adult women actually outnumber men for most series (the exceptions being magical girl series that are designed for adult male demographic in the first place like Madoka or Symphogear).
Sailor Moon S3 (when it premiered on Toonami) got me totally addicted when I was just getting out of HS... it was funny and I love Uranus/Neptune. Sure the dub claimed they were cousins... but it was sooooo obvious they weren't. Cousins don't walk into a rooms with super campy musical swells... or that scene where they're literally fondling eachothers hands.

Juju has an awful introduction but its suitable for the precocious loli trope. She said something bad to feel powerful while in an emotional state feeling angry and vulnerable. Try not to judge too harshly lol.

Well, Juju improved a lot even in this introduction episode. She's not like Runa from Yamada999 who needed much more time to become bearable (and did much worse things than a half-assed blackmail attempt as well)

The thing this about series, especially in the manga. When someone's character introduction is negative, you usually find that it gives them room form development. Juju isn't the best, but she's distinctly different from Marin, and I can appreciate that.
I honestly enjoyed that this anime didn't do the classic trope of "How do I get her to like me?" and instead switched to her inner monologue showing that she's starting to have feelings.
I missed it my first watch and it was pointed out to me, when he's walking her to the train and she suddenly got really shy? In the background was a poster portraying a classic Japanese wedding and Gojo was in front of the groom, for a split second i feel like she pictured that as her future.
21:12 it's not a loli trope she's just your typical tsundere. I know you didn't like her but you can't have a rom com anime without a tsundere, it's anime rules

I feel like its more of a "you stalked a stranger, lied your way into their home, and then blackmailed them to get what you want. You have NO ROOM to be judging anyone." situation. Yes she becomes a better character, but its a HORRIBLE introduction.
I mean the part where the magical girl anime is popular with young girls and adult males is pretty accurate to shows like Sailor moon or My little Pony for example.

16 years ago I had an ex-girlfriend who spread rumors of me of stalking her after we broke up, even though I thought we were still friends.
I could have lost my job if those rumors had gotten to the ears of the management where I worked. I got lucky though, my real friends came to my help and let me know what was going on. I told her to stay away from me and I would stay from her.
When stuff like what this loli did happens in anime it brings back bad memories.

@@buttponcho101 I just don't like it because it's almost only used as a rating booster. Here however, the show is actually good, so I don't mind it.
So seeing as how Alexia has already seen the whole show. I assume she knows how the rest of this arc goes and that the character while flawed has a lot to offer. I'm going to approach the problem from a storytelling angle. The Mangaka called Shinichi Fukuda (A fearless woman who has also created an 18+ Doujin of her own characters from this show) has created a situation where Gojo and this girl Juju have had a rather unfortunate first encounter. Now as to why she blackmails him. I would assume she sort of panicked and had nothing else. In a moment of bad decision moment the character uses the only thing she has over him. That encounter. She doesn't have anything else. He's already said he's not doing this as business so money is not an option which she has very willing to offer. So what now? She's a stranger so her asking him for a favour is unlikely going to work. She doesn't know that maybe she could persuade Gojo to do it out kindness. She has no idea who this man is and to be honest when someone bursts into the bathroom while you're in the nude. You're not exactly going to be thinking 100% critical or rational. Shame, anger and embarrassed will all be swirling making rational decision making difficult.
Now clearly it's not the best character introduction but even a wholesome show needs some kind of conflict and after this she never once acts on that or brings it back up. You can assume for all intents and purposes she realises what she did was wrong and will never act on it. The Mangaka clearly wants to focus on the relationship between Gojo and Marin but we need some side characters else the show would start to wean thin as in terms of progress of the relationship it's a really slow burn like most romance wholesome shows. The Japanese really have a thing for that and personally it can start to grate on me with how little progress is made in several hours worth of content.
_She threatened to go to the Police against him._ This is the equivalent of being *SWAT-ted* here in the US. *This is Criminal Blackmail & Extortion." The scene is a pile-up of bad Anime Tropes and Japanese Social Mores---and all it really showcases is what a shitshow both of those subjects are in the modern world. People who defend this are Sus as F#@!.

Juju definitely starts off with the Zero no Tsukaima "issues" but that's exactly why I like her character. I like seeing people grow and become nicer.
With hindsight from the rest of the anime, I read this blackmail part on her being a one-track mind idiot, as in "do whatever I must to accomplish what I set out to do" kinda idiot, the kind that do awful stuff without realizing how awful they were being and then regret it much later in life.

Unfortunately, a lot of magical girl shows have embraced that secondary demographic since the early 2000s. It's to the point that a lot of magical girl shows don't feel like they're even for girls anymore--the biggest exception being Precure, probably. And don't get me wrong, I _like_ some of these shows...but I tell you what, I'd like them a lot more if they didn't have so much sus in them.

Just imagine the end of the scene in the doll shop if Gojo could calm down and think for literally 2 seconds: Juju was stalking him to find out where he lives, lied to get in his house, got naked when left unsupervised (context matters, but still), then tried to blackmail him because he found her. Go on Juju, call the police! I think it won't be Gojo who gets arrested.

I dont mind mean characters on principle. My issues is when a mean character in a show/story never gets called out by the people around or there are never any consequences for their meanness. Happens a lot in anime. All I'll say with Juju... is it could have been worse 😅

Alicia I will say Juju does get better, this is actually a really weird showing of her character the first thing they do is sexualize her, make her a black mailer, and show her as a stalker. None of those things are consistent with her character as they are basically never brought up again. She is kind of judgy but her preconceived notions are decently rational (considering Marin a loud gyaru girl whose first move upon meeting is to jump on top of Juju and way invade her personal space, believing she's just an attention seeker is kinda fair) but as is shown in the episode she can admit when she is wrong and even apologize for sleights she didn't even say out loud.

Another suggestion for a potential reaction series: Sword Art Onlline Abridged and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. They're basically the pinacle of abridged series and considered on par if not better than the original and also internet classics.
I think Juju is a very good character, but that's something I can say because I am further down in the story. Her introduction was most likely the lowest point of the series imho (both for her and for the storytelling), but things improve.

Far too many don't get Loli culture in Japan, you can look up 20+ year old Japanese women that don't look like they are older than 15 or 16 and are tiny as well. You can have similar with other races older people who are tiny and look younger than actual age, but I think it's more predominant in the Asian races. Hence Loli culture, now I don't agree with the loli culture were it is older going after some one who is obviously younger. Yet, there is this other aspect that also exists and it's not the woman's fault that she is tiny and younger looking.
There will be a tsundre-esque type of girl in any highschool anime, thats basic etiquette xD I don't mind that, many are even written very good. And don't forget. They are highschoolers, ofc they are judgy and whack, think back at yourself in that age.

Juju is rough at first, even in the manga but she does get better. And yeah I thought also they were tossing in a true to form loli into the mix until we realized who she was and was like "ah, she's just really damn small lmao"
