1. Listen to Korean language a lot. I’ve been listening to Kpop and watching Kdrama almost everyday for the past 5 years. Tbh I didn’t take any classes at all, I’ve never received any formal education for Korean. I only pick up the words from songs and drama.
2. Write the words you learned (if you’re not lazy like me). For the first 4 or 5 months, I write the Korean words and its translation that I recently learned in my new diary. But then I find it hard to be consistent, so I just memorize the words and practice them.
3. For grammar, I learned it from the dramas because most song lyrics aren’t grammatically correct. Or maybe online classes but that didn’t help me because nobody was explaining how the grammar works.
4. Practice Korean with native speakers. Don’t only read, write and memorize! Don’t be afraid to speak a new language.
After teaching myself Korean for about a year, I get the chance to practice it with native Korean speakers because I traveled to Korea. The Koreans really loved me because I can speak their language with great pronunciation even tho it was broken (I understand them but can’t really speak). The next year, I moved to America and made friends with Korean students. I mostly talk to them in Korean and they really helped in fixing my grammar through our conversation. For vocabulary context, Kdramas and variety shows are enough to help you with vocab. Even by watching your idol videos is enough. You can also practice with Vlive. My Korean friends are always impressed of my vocabulary,, I even taught myself the trendy ones.
I think that’s all. I hope it helps! Learning a language is a progress. Take as much time as you want. You might learn faster with a teacher but I never really get fluent in Korean. I’m capable of everyday conversation since that’s basically all I heard in dramas and songs (I can’t talk about politics or economy lmao) I improve every single day :) and it’s fun, knowing new stuffs.
