Well I was wondering if it might be a reference to Dreams by Game, he references Nas in the line "sleep is the cousin of death, so my eyes wide open cos a dream is kin to your last breath". Maybe that's the dreamer reference?
This is why you guys are in a different league yo anyone else. The way you broke it down line for line and added context. There's other people that reacted to this song and didn't catch any lines and just sat there. Barely even understand it. You guys are the masters of this. Great reaction
Only issue is that they take his words for a story, like a novel of someone else. They analyse and chuckle about it from a 3rd perspective, but they don't feel that he lived these moments from what I could tell. They speak in an upbeat tone, not like the morose and almost satirical overshadowing tune.

"I'm not sure why I'm so infatuated with death" one of the realest quotes I've heard from Kendrick and I feel like its one of the foundations of his thought, that specific verse always reconnects with me every time I hear Kendrick on other tracks speaking on that dark topic
Its been known to be his FIRST Studio Album. He considers it a mix tape cause of how he distributed it, not for commercial or financial means.. he wanted the audience to feel him as an artist and see if they receive well to his project...which it did... some would say it shoulda been sold for profit. It woulda done well.
I think the foster care girl's voice faded away shortly after she said she didn't need a doctor's approval because her health declined and she eventually died from her lifestyle, but I never considered that it could be that she withdrew from the people that care about her and became a sort of lost cause.
I interpret the fade away on Keisha's sister as saying she passed away living that life she was talking about. She said she would never fade away and then she starts to fade. Now these ppl live through Kendrick's stories
I'm a metal head but I listened to the local rap station for the hell of it for about 4 months. Kendrick is the only one that made it to my music library. He is on a whole other level.
This song has aged BEAUTIFULLY. Kendrick is a POET. Probably the best of my generation, I’m 27 years old and I don’t think anyone will ever meet this level of poetry before I die. I can’t stress enough how talented he is, using language to tell a story about his life and the things that happen and have happened around him. His lyrics are SO POWERFUL.
I'm so bad at understanding word play and metaphors etc in music in general. This is actually so helpful cause if you understand the deeper meaning to the song you appreciate it way more

The second verse is from the perspective of Keisha's sister (a continuation of Keisha's Song from Section.80) - It's an angry sister calling Kendrick out for writing a song about her sister. I love the depth of this song so much.
I love the irony in the “never fade away” part. As she spills her doctrine, she continues to fade away trying to justify her actions, which makes her a lost cause not only to Kendrick, but also to what might inevitably happen to her in society. I like that attention to detail in the music. After all of the years hearing this song, I’ve recently picked up this interpretation . Great stuff!

"sleep is the cousin of death" is also a nod to Nas, who used that line in a song from illmatic (NY state of mind i think)
And then nas gives a nod to Kendrick in nasir so there's that full circle, Kendrick's made it

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. good kid, m.A.A.d city IS one of the greatest Rap albums of ALL TIME 🔥
Indeed
The second verse makes me wanna cry. Her being a lost cause and eventually dying from her reckless lifestyle. It makes me sad to think about.
selling yourself and losing all your dignity is still eccentric.
Did you know that’s Keisha sister?
Congrats to you both on the 500k!! Very happy for you both. #freethinkers #patreonforliv
