San Diego has 3.5 million people, no other sports competition, millions of angry jilted football fans looking to root for meaningful football games. New stadium. 2nd best winning percentage in football of all g5 teams over last 10 years. 5th best attendance of all g5 teams over the past 10 years. Large student body and alumni base. Currently building a campus expansion. Academics are respectable and rapidly improving. Best g5 basketball attendance. One of the most consistantly good g5 basketball programs. A lot of prime recruits come out of SD, but UCLA and USC consider SD their recruiting territory and have openly stated that they will block SDSUs consideration for the pac12 at all costs. San Diego has a lot going for it.
It’s not happening. Get over it.
These guys don't know they sit in Texas acting like they are better than anyone yet the 3 best Texas teams left for other conferences and Texas tech will to. They will end up losing Texas tech and west Virginia and since they are beggers being choosers their new conference will be Baylor, TCU, Houston, SMU, Oklahoma state, Tulsa, Kansas, Kansas state, Iowa state, and UTEP and basketball will be the money maker. They'll get a 12 million dollar a team tv deal and wonder what happened.
SD County has produced FOUR Heisman Trophy winners; Marcus Allen, Rashan Salaam, Ricky Williams, Reggie Bush ,not to mention Jr Seau, Alex Smith, Donnie Edwards, Terrell Davis....and on and on and on. Pretty good recruiting territory.
They're also something like 90-42 since 2010.

As a UCF grad, let me add to your point about UCF and USF not liking each other. Back when the Big East was looking to expand, then USF President Judy Geneshaft was rumored to have been blocking UCF from joining the conference. She was proposing ideas such as Georgetown (Football was FCS) over UCF. When asked publicly about whether she was blocking them, Geneshaft said "What is happening is the league, or the conference, now is looking at schools and they have looked very much at schools that are not in any of the states that are represented by the Big East schools right now. The ones that they're looking at right now, they do not sit in any state that the Big East schools currently are in."
In short, she did not want another Florida school in the Big East. It was not until more teams left and the conference completely collapsed that she was forced to go along with UCF. Many argue that her blocking UCF led more schools like Louisville to bail, ultimately killing the conferences auto-bid. Not only will UCF leave USF behind, we will laugh in their faces as we close the door behind us.

@@Sloppyplane37 UCF is head towards the moon. Upper deck about to be installed to the bounce house adding another 20k fans which will be close to 70k seats. UCF now in big 12 which means they will be able to score more 5 star recruits. Right now FSU and Miami suck and Florida is the only team that can challenge UCF for recruits. I see UCF winning the whole thing within the next 5 to 8 years.

Houston would be a good addition. Their rivalry with Memphis is a good one. Just FYI, Memphis has a 5-0 record against the Coogs since 2016. Tigers are a quickly rising football program no doubt.
Think think the Big doesn’t want to add anymore Texas Schools
Memphis was the first school out of the running in 2016(after the board was cleared of schools that had no shot). I'm not certain they fair much better this time. Although I appreciate that Memphis can handle more than one sport at a time....their basketball is outstanding.
That was 5 years ago. Athletic fortunes for many schools have changed.
@@bobplunk3697 Memphis has a decent pedigree. They have played a good number of Power 5 schools in their top 10 all-time. ....teams like: Miss, Miss St, Louisville, Cincy, Houston and Tenn.
Unfortunately, their educational standards are even below UCF. Which I believe is why the were excused last time.
Will this go-around be any different?? It's still the Presidents that make the decision so, I doubt it.
I think their biggest plus....is their location to the rest of the schools.
As said before, that was 5 years ago. Academic advances have been made by many schools. I’m sure the eight remaining league members will check into changes that have occurred at any interested institutions.
I disagree on San Diego. Big School in big city that lost its NFL team. SDSU is the only game in town and has a long 2nd-tier football history at a time when elevation might pay off big.
My neighbor was a proud Aztec alum. He hung the school Flag hung near his garage in a small town in Oregon. Could be a nice grab.
12-team: BYU, Houston, Cincinnati, UCF, 16-team: Boise, SDSU, CSU, Memphis, 20-team: USF, UNLV, Fresno State, SMU. But, may go for ND, UA, ASU, Colorado, Utah, Louisville, Pittsburg, etc….
I disagree about USF. If you couple UCF with USF, you basically have a solid presence in the #2 football state in the country. You can now recruit Florida easier, and you expand your marketing footprint to the east coast. My picks for expansion (taking it back to 12): BYU (no brainer here), BSU (gives the conference more football street cred), UCF (gives the conference more football street cred and opens Florida), and USF (expands presence in Florida and solidifies Big XII recruitment/marketing footprint).
UCF learned never to trust USF when conference talk pops up, looks at history of why Big East fell apart.
Why would you accept BYU, they are living in the 19th century, fuck their goofy religious bullshit.

First off, like the Top 5 at 5:55!! Know this has to take a lot of thought but it's always enjoyable.
I'd like to see UNLV and San Diego State in the Big 12. Might as well add BYU and Boise State and have a Big 12 Western Division. Then add some Eastern Teams (UCF, USF, etc.) and have an Eastern Division along with West Virginia. Then have a North and South Division ala the NFL with the NFC. Have the same playoff structure as the NFC and shorten the conference schedules to allow for the playoff games which hopefully garners more TV money. Anyway, I have lots of good ideas but no one ever asks!!

Want some amno....even IF we factor in a 4-4 football covid year. Since 2010, SDSU is football 94-46. Worse record 7-6 non covid with multiple 10+ win seasons.
SDSU Basketball in the same time period winning percentage is .757.
And like 5-2, or something like that against Power 5 schools in maybe the last 5 years.

I am not a grad or student of SDSU, nor am I from the West Coast, I'm from NYC.
Now what other program being discussed is equal to that?
The media market is huge in San Diego, but it doesn’t equate to much in reality. People in california really don’t consume college sports on the same level as other parts of the country. It’s the reason why the PAC-12 has the lowest media revenue of any p5 conference even with California having 37 million people.
I understand your point about West Coast college football and viewership. But I think we would agree their national numbers are down due to not the greatest tv deals and being 3 hours behind.
But still, regarding San Diego St, compared to say Cinny, Boise, SMU, etc, the success in Football and Basketball, coupled with that market, and expanded recruiting opportunities in So. Cal for the other schools, in my opinion, make them a no brainer P5 candidate.

@@k-hustlethesportspreacher5941 Thanks! Turns out the conference office also talked to SMU quite a bit. But Houston was clearly the best choice in Texas, it's a big school with solid sports programs in a big market that was slipping away from the conference, and TCU and Baylor weren't as interested in adding another team in DFW.

It comes down to this. It's all about the image. From the outside, we saw the Big 12 conference as the flyover states + Texas and Oklahoma. Now it's just the flyover states. You guys got to reinvent your image. You guys go out and pick up San Diego State, UNLV, Memphis, Houston, Cincinnati, USF (Tampa), UCF (Orlando), SMU. Suddenly, you're not the flyover conference anymore. You're this urban college conference, which is a lot more interesting! Hell, if it was successful, you could probably even lure Louisville. Would Baylor vs UNLV be any worse than Baylor vs Kansas?
Come out of left field and hit up North Dakota St. They travel well everywhere they play. Proved they had great coaching with two of their coach's moving up to FBS. They even have beat several P5 schools.
not gonna happen. They have a nice program, but bring nothing in for recruiting, TV market, and their facilities are nice by very subpar for Power 5 team. Also, geographically, all these southern schools already hate traveling to Ames Iowa in November. No way they want to go even further north. Sorry.
@@desmoinesreport I mean they are in a dome so weather wouldn't be an issue. But it has been a name brand team in the lower division and would be a better choice than teams that get brought up like Rice UConn and any other small team out of Texas. But like I said it's a left field idea look at liberty and coastal Carolina they are doing well and both have beat power 5 teams when they moved up.

I'd take Fresno State as the P5 dark horse in California. 30k-student school, only big college program in a 4-million person "state within a state" with three ok media markets (Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield). Decent 40k stadium that regularly sells out, excellent hoops arena. Agricultural region - Big XII program in Witness Protection.
No to Memphis and Boise state.
New Mexico has a large enough market. Great medical school along with traditionally strong basketball program. Too bad football isn’t their strong suit. If it was, it would fit in fine with the remaining schools.
I'd love to see SMU join, but I just don't see it happening. None of the other schools on this list even make as much sense as the Mustangs.

2. The B12 also kicked out TCU with SMU
3. Despite being kicked out for 30 years, SMU still has 4 TIMES as many conference titles from a major conference as TCU
4. SMU literally went from tying for national champions in 81 and 83 not literally not even being allowed to play the sport three years later, because of violating a rule that has sense been struck down by the US Supreme Court as being unconstitutional. It’s not gonna be a good look to keep holding the death penalty over their head, when other programs in the same bloody conference were literally doing the exact same thing 30 years ago, and in the 30 years of destroying that program, other programs have been convicted of the exact same violations yet never received the same punishment.
In fact if the NCAA isn’t going to penalize Penn State and Baylor for extremely severe criminal crimes with a death penalty..... I mean wtf ...... then that institution really does owe SMU $100 billion for destroying that program too severely.

@@brian2440 I absolutely agree that SMU was punished much more harshly than Penn State or Baylor despite their violations not being as heinous. I think the NCAA learned it's lesson.
If Big-12 were to go to 16 who would that last member be? (Assuming the first 7 are BYU, Cincy, Memphis, UCF, Boise, Houston, Colorado St). NDSU? I think that San Diego St would be the best remaining.

@@antonioedwards1620 I could see it but I would take SDSU over USF for a few reasons. 1. Adding a new state (big one at that). 2. SDSU is the top team for college/pro sports in the city. 3. SDSU has much better basketball and actually brings value there.
IMO Temple, Tulane, and SMU. Temple is the only one I think head and should above sdst. Bigger market and east coast presence. Other two give an old SWC vibe. And more importantly dont have to go all the way out west.

Unless it's been changed there is a minimum seating capacity if you must have that your stadium to be in the big 12 and I don't think the schools have stadiums that large

@@osupokie the last time the big 12 was going to expand they turned down a couple of schools because their stadiums wasn't large enough TCU had to expand their stadium that's how they finally got in but by the time all these other schools expands their stadium the big 12 will be dissolved
Going to sound crazy but I could see Liberty turning into the Baptist Notre Dame. They have HUGE enrollment and their football team gets better every year. Gives WVU a closer game also. That’s my sleeper pick…..Really Big 12 should try to get to 16 teams ASAP. One of the current 8 is bound to negotiate their departure with another conference. So a big play could settle things down IMO.
The university is also flush with money, so much so that they declined money they could have made by joining a conference just so they could be independent. I agree that there's a very high ceiling for Liberty, but even so, it could take years before they rise to the level of Big 12 ball.
I want to laugh at the idea of Liberty, but honestly you're right. They've got money out the @$$ and are in a good state for talent.

@@brian2440 Catholics all over the US route for ND. Same with Mormons and BYU. I just don’t see that with Baptists and Baylor, a national fan base. Liberty might not have that either but with 80,000 enrolled (mostly online) their alumni numbers will be huge. And as someone else said they have lots of money. That was the thought behind that statement, potential to have a national following.
A lot of these takes and comments are looking at teams and schools like the would operate in a vacuum and be unchanged going forward. If we’re looking at schools that can come in and offer value day 1, the options are almost nonexistent. The value in schools like SDSU, UNLV, CSU…etc is the potential of the developing markets. The Big 12 is going to have to put some work in these institutions and brands to be successful.
That was the rationale behind the Big Ten taking Rutgers and Maryland, but after 7 or so years, I can't say it's worked out for them.

Exactly that is why I don't think the big 12 should go to 16 schools.
BYU- already a national brand due to its religious affiliation. BYU is practically Notre Dame light. Huge fan base travels well good facilities
Cincinnati- A very strong basketball program. A football program that is on the rise went to hell with Georgia and a bowl game last year. Prospect massive amounts of money upgrading their facilities.
UCF- a solid top 25 football program. In a major TV market. Huge student body enrollment. In Florida.
Memphis- has a corporate backer. Fairly large TV market. Super strong in basketball. A decent football program. Overall good facilities.
Those are four schools with huge potential upsides that wouldn't require near the investment that UNLV would. They are closer so the travel wouldn't be nearly as cost prohibitive. And they would bring credibility football wise right from the get-go
Did know the San Diego region produce the most Heisman winners Rashaan Slam, Marcus Allen, Ricky Williams & Reggie Bush. 2 Super Bowl MVPS Terrell Davis and Marcus Allen. If it wasn't for San Diego the B8/B12 will have 2 less Heisman Heisman Trophy winners.
Surprised to not see Colorado State on that list. Not really sure what Colorado State brings to the table other than being a bridge between K-State and BYU.
CSU is a serious option. They probably don't come into the picture unless the Big 12 is looking to move to 14 or 16, but they're a legitimate addition.

Who had ever heard of Baylor before they landed in big 12 outside of Texas?
UNLV is playing all their games in the new spaceship they built for the Raiders. The Pac12 is playing their championship game there this year. They want to muscle in that market. UNLV will be a program on the way up with facilities like that.
I agree , the PAC 12 wants to get in that market now, the Big 12 Should add UNLV with a Power Move and a gamble that I think will pay off in the long run.

enrollment doesn't matter if largerly commuter students. Commuter students don't bond with their school at the same degree as those that attend on campus.

Why not Appalachian State? It is in a top TV market(Charlotte) compared to all the others(except maybe Houston), decent at football since joining FBS, just expanded stadium. I know it a smaller school with 20,000 and the Basketball team is hit or miss.

The points they bring up but I'll just play Devil's Advocate for the 5 schools
5. SMU - DFW is a monster place population wise and yes it took 30 years to rebuild their program but it was called the "Death penalty" not the 5 year penalty. The B12 made very likely see the positives to a school in Dallas with the change in NIL moving forward. Additionally, SMU has money in massive donors and they've shown a willingness in the past to spend it! Pony Express comes to mind and it's the whole reason they got in the mess in the first place.
4. USF - when they're good their fans know it and they show up! Located in Tampa and they have a monster enrollment to show up to games if they get the chance. NIL will likely be a great help to them as well. Recruit heavy state for both basketball and football.
3. UConn - probably a basketball blue blood and they're located in a population heavy are on the East coast. Closer to West Virginia than other choices that have been thrown out.
2. UNLV - Literally said "massive, emerging market"... The UNLV name carries weight and is located in a town that has been synonymous with entertainment. NIL will have probably the most rags to riches effect on UNLV out of all universities. The new stadium is going to play a role in football recruiting and oddly enough the state isn't recruit barren.
1. SDSU - Located in a massive metro that just lost their pro football team to Los Angeles. They are currently building a new footballs stadium and if UNLV is added the driving distance between the two is relatively close by western standards. 'If California could support another P5 school they probably would' or hear me out... USC and UCLA don't want another P5 football team in the state so they will never allow SDSU to get elevated. Does that sound familiar?
Now for the Prosecutions statement
5. SMU - is another small private school. Historically, small private schools haven't done as well as giant public schools have. They've dumped a ton of money into their facilities but their stadium can only seat 30,000 roughly and they have trouble filling that even when they're good. The B12 already has 1 school in the DFW metro why do they need another? Not to mention their record since the Death Penalty has been POOR.
4. USF - The numbers when they're poor are not great. Their huge enrollment haven't shown up to games and their basketball team is horrible. They need to build a new stadium on-campus to get a fan draw and create an atmosphere worth marketing. Those things take too much time. Additionally, UCF down the road will be ready and should control most of the central Florida market.
3. UConn - Their basketball may be good but that's only 20-35% of the revenue. They're located literally thousands of miles away from current B12 schools and they're not close to BYU or UCF who are both likely candidates. Their football program is horrid and unless that changes their likely a really bad fit. Lastly, stating they give WVU a travel buddy is a bad take when they're still 9 hours away.
2. UNLV - LV is a long long ways away from WVU and Cincy. They may be close to BYU but their football record means the games won't be great draws anyways. They may be moving into a new stadium but that stadium hold 65,000 and they won't bring half of that.
1. - SDSU - Is even farther away that Vegas and the in conference travel is going to kill them and any school that has to go to them. The inter conference games will be hard to market with no real history or context to go off of.
UCONN is also for sure off the table seeing as they literally aren’t even in the AAC anymore, and have signed a 5 year contract to join the Big East for all sports.

Pac 12 won't touche Boise or UNLV because of academics. UNLV just moved into the Las Vegas Raiders stadium, which is pretty swank.

I have to educate you gyus about UNLV... for the last 25 years this school never invested in the football ever. The school invested in the runnin rebels ..it was all basketball with tark then president maxon just trashed everything the basketball program was financed by steve wynn for the next 15 years but there was never any money for football. The stadium was so bad the sewer line ran underground to the sewer plant and the football practice was a dump. They keep trying to bring coaches but they couldnt recuit . Some people wanted to dismantle the program .but they got the gaming and fertilla family Sheldon addleson to build a 36 million dollar football facility then follow with 105 million upgrade to Thomas and mack millions were invested into education where in 2019 we became a tier1 research institution plus the 2 billion dollar stadium was done. We brung a young coach that has recuting experience with covid we cant get recuits on visits. The last 2 recuting years are the best in history that will pay off in 2 years metro vegas is 2 7 million pouplation and will hit 3 million in 2025 . By having a palace to play has cause san diego st, colorado st ,Hawaii to build new stadiums the school is doing everything they can to get into the power5
The school would like to go to the pac 12 .everyone that visits the stadium loves to come and play here the iowa st fans call allegiant stadium Jack trice west. We hosts 5 conference championship in basketball pac 12 is playing their football championship here the new pac 12 commissioner is a vegas person . I know our football program is going the right way the pac 12 is eventually move the office here to Vegas..college football is now drivin by gaming boise st is going to have to upgrade their stadium . Why unlv has not been picked yet is really up to the pac 12 if they 14 or 16 but the school is going in the right way
Memphis, SDSU, and CSU belong in the xii as well.
SMU would out recruit and outdraw baylor and most big 12 schools which is why they are a no for SMU to be added.

Four out of five programs are defiant no’s, but San Diego Sage is a maybe could see Tulane Tulsa Houston UCF CIncy Boise State Memphis and maybe BYU if they could figure out some scheduling in other sports . I can also see dark horses a in either Marshall or Liberty if they want another east coast team

Colorado St and New Mexico fit the mold or designation of a typical P5 school - Large research flagship/land grant universities that represent the entire state, not just a "city". Both are close geographically but lean towards PAC12 culturally. Both bring sizeable markets. Unfortunately, both have had their growth severely stunted by residing in a G5 conference making about $3M/yr total and the stigma that comes with it. ESPN who created the term "mid-major", does a fabulous job of putting the G5 in their place. Something the Big12 refugees are about to find out regardless of who they expand with. Too bad both schools couldn't get their football program on track because both are natural fits for the Big12.

As a Vegas resident I can tell you nobody cares about UNLV here. They have been losing for so long that they have absolutely no significant following here. Nobody goes to the games nobody cares. I agree with your other pics wholeheartedly with the possible exception of SDS you. Big city, cool location, the big knock against them is that they are just so far away. The next Add has to be Boise State and someone else, probably Memphis

I get this is a big story of college football right now. But...ANY institution that would plan on joining the Big 12 at this time just needs slapped in the head and asked "Are you stupid!". I'm not saying Bob Bowlsby isn't out there recruiting his ass off trying to get schools to commit and save the conference if possible. But at the end of the day, I don't care what has or hasn't been announced at this point. At least 4 if not 6 of the remaining 8 Big 12 schools already have plans in the works to leave by 2022. The remaining schools have there own agenda.. and should!! Especially WVU who has been blind sided before with realignment BS. They should only be thinking about #1 (Themselves) and I think they are and have. I think it's a certainty they're gone. There are NO schools out there the Big 12 can lure in to make it a sustainable and legitimate power 5 conference going forward.
You may think I'm crazy. But...did anyone not get caught out of the blue with Oklahoma and Texas leaving? It can happen with the remaining 8 as well. I dont believe a thing announced by the commissioners of the Pac 12, Big 10 or ACC. WVU, Kansas, Iowa St and Oklahoma St are definitely gone by 2025.
Birmingham Alabama has been the top Media market for college football 12 years running, followed by Columbus Ohio and Oklahoma City.
UAB has a good team, if UA-Tuscaloosa would let them be Power5. Schools close to the other top markets would make better sense. And Schools near a Pro Football Franchise are the worse.

Those people must just stream college football 24/7 because there’s nothing else to do. For sports in general Birmingham ranks 38th by Nielsen. For media markets in general it ranks 43rd.
So that’s a pretty big leap to #1 for the 4th largest sports market (meaning college football) in the country

UConn is an independent the money isn't there. Basketball gets all the money because of national championships. At the end of the big east Louisville, west Virginia and Rutgers was all in top 10 and UConn was competitive and building their program. There is no saving the big12 now that I listen to you guys talk

Why do say that Nebraska would never come back? What's to keep them from coming back? Are there plans to have them crawl through a burning building? I happen to know that the fans up there would love them coming back. They can't recruit in the Big 10. What about Missouri or Colorado? I don't know about Colorado but Missouri fans for the most part would love to see Mizzou in the Big 12 again. What about Colorado? They're getting their brains beat out in the PAC 12. Texas A&M? They are a sleeping giant. The big reason they haven’t broken through is an old feud with the Bear-Bryant family. Paul’s son held a grudge and barred the school from stepping up within the Alabama Board of Education system.
Why would any team join the sinking ship of the irate 8. They’d be better off trying other conferences. What good nationally are the leftover 8? Let me be clear I like them and feel sorry for them, but they have only themselves to blame.
Try other conferences? Really? Where have been the last few week? No place to go Brother. With no place to go we are making the best of a bad situation. There are a handful of teams in the other P5 conferences that will be in this predicament in the near future.
Big 12 is not a sinking ship . Oklahoma and Texas got to pay 150 million to leave the conference early . They still got P5 status .
Tulane would be a good addition, they have the academics and plenty of people in the gulf coast region.
I feel like the only teams worth adding to a powerfive conference right now is BYU Houston Cincinnati Memphis and UCF that's it. So the big 12 needs to pick the 4 they like best out of that 5 and just be the big 12 again and go with it and hope no other teams get poached out of the remaining 8.

The three that would make the most sense are BYU, UCF and Cincinnati, the fourth is an interesting call. I have heard the other three schools in Texas don’t want Houston so is it Boise State maybe. It will be interesting to see, the one thing I would say is if you are a school that wants in the club, don’t trash the club, talking to you Houston, because they will tell you to take a hike.
Yeah BYU, UCF and Cincy are top options. The next 3 would be Memphis, Boise and Houston. Tough to say who Big-12 would choose if they only took 1 of those

Arkansas razorback fan here. In a few years of dealing with texas we will be ready to jump over to the big 12, so will Missouri and A&M. We came over here 30 years ago to get away from Texas. It was the university presidents that voted 14-0. All for the money. And most people don't realize the athletic directors don't control the money coming in. Athletic departments are given a budget by the university presidents. Alot of people on the outside is saying this is all for the money. We're saying the same thing on the inside. If the athletic departments got the vote texas wouldn't be in the SEC.

Reason that you look at SMU is that they can be a perennial Top 25 team & with the Texas schools as rivals, you can bring up the attendance & the reason you take them & U of H is that you want to take as much of the Texas market from UT, OU & A&M as you can. Grab as much of the Dallas & Houston market as you can. I wouldn't have them as a first choice, but if you are adding 6 teams, I think they should be looked at.
UNLV has a consistently terrible program, has always had a terrible football program.
Everyone in Dallas and Houston watch longhorns, Sooners, and Aggies football. Very few are interested in cougars or mustang football or basketball

A TCU vs. SMU rivalry would get fans in the DFW area or a U of H vs. a TCU or SMU or Baylor or Texas Tech. Okla. St coming into Dallas. People say that there isn't much interest in SMU football right now, but outside of U of H, there are no real competitive local teams/rivalries in the AAC. Who wants to see SMU vs. ECU or U of H vs. USF, but if it's Texas Tech vs. U of H or SMU vs. Okla. St there will be much more interest.

If the Big 12 goes to 16 UNLV would be a great add. A NFL Stadium, probably the best travel town in the conference. I think the NIL in Vegas will bring a lot better athletes to the school and also believe the pac12 will add them if they go to 16. Both USF and UNLV proved why they’re not getting a P5 invite. Nobody is going to pay good money to watch you get shut out for the third time in three seasons or lose to FCS teams.
And I disagree about SDSU and UNLV. They are both in growth mode. If you are building for the future and looking at 2025-2040, these schools are going to be very different than they are now. Ditto for Boise State. Memphis is a school I am not sure of. If it had been in Nashville I would have said absolutely.
