Ever considered doing some crazy experiment that would make you go viral? Right now you have a really loyal fan base because you are consistent with quality in your videos but I think if you made something explode you would attract a much wider audience potentially viral even

0:40 I guess I am lucky, I have seen Cherenkov's radiation at Oak Ridge Tennessee. Once I saw the blue flash at a plutonium facility, but fortunately it was just photography LOL Sure got my adrenaline up you better believe!
As for the sphere, great tribute to the sphere! And even more so, the "solids of constant width" totally amazing and fascinating little things aren't they!

Brainiac, you deserve alot more subscribers than you have already. You have some pretty funny humor in some of your videos, especially the one with the magnet and the electronics.
I wish you best of luck my friend, and hopefully you stay for the long run, I say that because I've seen some similar channels that stopped producing videos sadly.
    cheers mate.

FYI, avocado actually SHOULD be extinct. The avocado evolved to be eaten by large animals that no longer exist. They now exist solely because humans like the taste. Without us, they would go extinct.

about that surface being the double of the surface when you cut it in half, i think is like looking at a square, it looks like all lines are the same but if you draw a diagonal its larger tha the other lines. (sorry I dont talk a good english)

+Mikelod12 but why is the proportion for a sphere exactly the surface area being 1/4 of the area of a circle with the same radius
i visualize a flat circle and for it to turn into a half sphere it must stretch out by the radius. I can visualize the area stretching and increasing but why does it increase by exactly 2 fold?

I bought my crystal ball directly from China on eBay. Search for '100mm crystal ball'.
The one with bubble inclusions is actually for a garden water feature (Kugel Ball) - meant to be rolling on a film of water in a hole carved in a stone. You may find a spare sphere in a local garden center like I did.

i love this video! i too share your enthusiasm for spheres and circles so much so in fact that i considered writing a book on it but i don't have good enough writing skills to make that sound interesting! Why is it that a lot of the things we do and in nature are circles? raindrops, stars, planets. Even the way we think and learn, the way we form circles to learn and stuff its fascinating!

I would love to read that book! It was scary for me to make a video just about spheres interesting. But it worked out well once I started - and spent a sh!tload of hours on making it entertaining and beautiful to watch ;)

I was going to comment on this video and realized I already did! Anyhow, when I left my old job last year I took a "crystal ball" with me. It's just glass but it's spherical and mesmerizing. On the way home the sun actually hit the sphere and melted part of my seat. I only noticed it when sitting at a light and saw smoke. Oops! Also, it's dangerous to hold one outside in the sunlight because it will also burn skin. :-o I actually dropped it because of that but it is still intact. I've learned my lesson. ;) Grats on getting many more subs since this video was made.

I actually have those solids of constant width from maths gear (meissner bodies), kinda disappointed that they aren't solid plastic but actually just a thin and light shell, still loving the fact they can't be turned on a lathe. Thanks for the video, always getting excited when I see a new one is up!
I also am interested in almost all the other stuff you like, I do have magnets and lasers and some other "applied physics gadgets". You should make a video just randomly showing some stuff that would otherwise not be worth making a whole video about! Maybe you have something that I'd actually love to have as well, would be awesome to see some new exciting stuff. Keep up the great work!

      @brainiac75  8 лет назад

      +Streamtronics
Thanks! The meissner bodies are definitely more complicated than the shown solids of constant width. I may have to order three at some point even though they're not solid aluminium like the ones shown in this video.
I do have more things to show. Stay tuned for stuff to come in the future :)

For the hemisphere golden ratio thing at 3:50, I’d imagine you’re looking for a practical method that would relate the inner area to the outer. Basically, to visualize, all you need to do is imagine that the shape is hollow and made out of paper. When you bend the inner circle (or “plate”) inward so that it matches the outer layer’s curve, you’ll see that it’s smaller by a noticeable 2x amount. That means there’s a strong relationship between the curve length and the actual length.

Thanks! eBay is probably the easiest way to find them. For example search eBay for 2" steel ball and you should find a selection. Larger ones are available but they quickly get expensive if you want two. A 100mm (4") is £120 :/ (www.ebay.com/itm/100mm-AISI-420C-Stainless-Steel-Balls-Grade-100-AISI420C-/221996579095?var=&hash=item33b006f917:m:mT3C8yuPAJwXQhcLU3HVyLQ)
