    I've read most books on Jack the Ripper since the mid 80s, and Holmgren's book is the most realistic one. All the others, although often brilliant in finding evidence, and clarifying evidence, had some elements that were just fantasy. In other words, where evidence was lacking there would always be a leap in imagination, and that is where they always went wrong. Holmgren didn't fall into that hole. Personally I always believed the Ripper was there somewhere in police records, that man was Lechmere.

    I've just received my copy of Christer's book, Cutting Point , after watching this I will bury my head in it for the rest of the day. Many thanks gents for shedding light on this case. I watched the Missing Evidence program in 2014 and until I recently discovered your channel Ed I thought the trail had gone cold. I've long been fascinated and horrified by the JTR case but gave up due to some of the nonsense & crackpot theories being pushed. Once again thank you Ed and Christer for your hard work and amazing detail utterly fascinating I wait for every episode to come out.

    Thank you again, Edward and Christer! "The Missing Evidence" was what first piqued my deeper interest in the Ripper case. Until that point, I'd had a passing interest, but 'Ripperology' had seemed a futile pursuit because we'd just never know the answer. However, the idea that Lechmere was found by Paul, standing over the body of poor Mary Ann Nichols - in an otherwise empty street - before the fatal wound in her neck had even begun to bleed visibly, seemed to me to be incontrovertible evidence of his guilt. Theories based on the assumption of the Ripper's medical experience (which was disputed even at the time of the murders) or focused on men who were Jewish (and who sadly suffered from what we'd now identify as a mental illness), always seemed very tenuous and speculative. Subsequent discoveries that Lechmere's mother operated a 'cat meat' business and that he was specifically a meat carter convinced me that he may have had some basic knowledge of butchery, but was at least unlikely to have been squeamish about gore. If you accept, as I do, that the same man was responsible for at least the 'canonical five' Ripper murders, Lechmere certainly has opportunity and means in respect of all cases. I'm convinced that today, he would be found guilty of the Nichols murder, even if he could not with certainty be convicted of all five. The lingering mystery for me is why did he stop? Was it the change in his domestic circumstances? Was it because the Mary Jane Kelly murder finally fulfilled his fantasies? Or did he, like Joseph de Angelo, believe that policing and investigation methods were improving and that to continue would certainly result in his arrest? OR - maybe as Edward says, he did not stop, just got smarter!! Fascinating stuff and brilliant interview. Thanks again, gentlemen!

    Hello, I'm certainly not an expert on this subject; in fact my interest spans over the last few weeks. I'm a writer, writing a detective story about a police officer in 1944. I couldn't take my detective back in time so I decided that he would be presented with a series of copy-cat killings. Thant's when I started researching the history of Jack the Ripper. I found myself hooked. Of the many documentaries I have seen I reached the conclusion that Lechmere was the most likely suspect and then I found your series on The House of Lechmere. I thank you for these videos. I know people can be quick to accuse this theory of containing too much supposition - there has to be a certain amount of supposition in a case this old anyway - but the same applies to all the other suspects too. The other theories tend to centre around one particular murder, whereas Lechmere is placed in such a way that all the murders are in his vicinity. I may be wrong but I think Lechmere is the killer. Thanks again for your videos.

    Yet another great episode of THoL. I stumbled upon these videos and, like the documentary production team, quickly became convinced that Lechmere was the ripper. He is definitely the only suspect that fits with what we know today about many serial killers m.o.'s and personalities etc. (as was discussed in the death of Peter Sutcliffe episode).
    It seems unbelievable now that Lechmere was there all along in the police files and literally hiding in plain sight. Even more unbelievable is that there is so much resistance to him as a suspect. Not to say that people should just instantly dismiss every other theory but it seems insane to me that some don't even want to consider him!!

    • @christerholmgren335
      @christerholmgren335 Год назад +5

      There are typically no classical motives involved in cases of sexual serial murder. The murders are themselves the motive; it is about how the killer wants to feel in control and have the power of other human beings, and many times about feeding a massive narcissism. The killer wants recognition, and is often unable to get ii in his normal social life, so he turns to something that WILL get him recognition. These murders are not about jilted love, money, having been insulted or so on, even of elements of these matters can to a degree be present. Some serial killers may take money from their victims, and it may be that some serial killers have been mocked by prostitutes and so on, but these things are not the ulterior motives as such. If they were, why would the serial killer go on to kill women who never mocked him, instead of killing just the one who did?

    Im not sure how anyone could be so sure that he would've definitely stayed put when Paul approached, as the policeman in the 'Missing evidence' seems to be. For sure he would've heard the footsteps before he was clearly seen and would've been hastily weighing his options in his mind as to whether to stay or flee. But I think he would've also known that if he ran there was a good chance of running straight into a beat policeman and becoming embroiled in a chase that he may not have won, given that there were other police in nearby streets. So he chose a risky option because it meant he could now be identified by Paul. Which is why i agree with Edward's theory that he chose his next victim in an area that kept Paul as a potential person of interest, taking focus away from himself. I suppose it's possible he worked out his options in advance, before he began the murder, since he already knew he was taking a big risk. And he doesn't seem to have been out of control at any time or he wouldn't have been able to front Paul in the way he did. It seems so very cunning. In similar circumstances, the yorkshire ripper chose to run when disturbed, but the street situation with a park over the road enabled him to do that. And the route was also one Lechmere used every day which made it tricky for him, whereas in yorkshire it was one street in a much wider area of attack Thank you both for another highly professional and illuminating video. I never thought this case would be solved, just because of lack of forensics, and everybody being dead now, but i think you've done it. Congratulations. All those dozens of books published on this case and they all got the one key part wrong. It's incredible. I guess the most resistance you get will be from those people who invested their belief into the book they bought, or the book they wrote. But most people just want to know the truth.

Point being they are a particular breed and extremely teratorial. They used the Jack The Ripper case to illustrate this point. Suggesting that the torsos that showed up around London at the time were the work of another killer who believed Jack, with all the press he was getting, was stepping on his toes. He put torsos everywhere, including Scotland Yard, as a way of marking his territory to Jack. Could be himself the reason Jack 'disappeared '.
    What do you make of this, if anything? Which is most likely to be Lechmear if we are talking about two killers? I'd be sooooo interested in your take.

      I don´t know if you have read Cutting Point? The name of the book refers to the railway arch in which the Pinchin Street torso was found, and I think the Pinchin Street case is the clincher for a common originator of both series. The torso was found in the very street where Charles Lechmere grew up during his formative years as a boy. Also, the place where his mother lived with Joseph Forsdyke, in Splidts Street, in the exact same area, was torn down to give way for that railway arch. Moreover, the day after the torso was found, a bloody apron was found dumped up at the building site for the new St Philips church, right by the London Hospital. Oddly, if you draw a line from the arch and straight over the site where the apron was found, and if you prolong that line up to the northeast, you end up exactly at the place where Lechmere lived, 22 Doveton Street. Coincidence? Again? Personally, I do not think so. Moving on, I believe that the reason that the torso was dumped in Ripper territory, carrying a shallow ”blueprint” cut all the way down the abdomen, was that the killer was tired of not getting recognition for both series. I think we are looking at an outcry: ”Now do you see? I am responsible for BOTH series!”. The idea that a torso killer would be fiercely territorial is interesting, but in these cases, I do not think there was any contest going on, since I believe there was just the one, deeply frustrated killer, who - as narcissists do - wanted recognition. I would also point to how it was believed that both Chapman and Kelly were examples of efforts to try and decapitate. There were deep notches and cuts in the structures that suggested this, but it seems the killer did not have the knowledge to decapitate by way of knife. In this context, it should be noted that Charles Hebbert - who examined and described the four torso victims from 1887 to 1889, said that the killer went through a progression - in the first three cases, reaching up to the summer of 1889, way beyond the failed effort to decapitate Kelly back in November 1888, the so called Torso killer used a saw to take the head off. In the summer of 1889, he had learnt how to sever the spine in the back by way of knife, but still had to use a saw to take off the head of Liz Jackson. Then, in September of 1889, he finally took off the head of the Pinchin Street victim using a knife only. In my world, it all fits together, piece by piece, and I have no doubts whatsoever that we are looking at a common originator. Many thanks for your kind words and I hope to have provided a useful answer for you!

      @@christerholmgren335 I had heard before, and must admit forgotten, about how the deep cuts to the throats of the Ripper victims were attempts at decapitation. I also now remember that the ripper never started cutting until he had already strangled his victims. A point which made him stand out sooo much from all the other nasty murderers in London up until that point. ( someone who kills to cut rather then cuts to kill.) But I had never heard of the comment you told me about by the coroner who talked of a progression in skills as far as dismemberment goes when it comes to the torso killings. Neither had I ever heard someone putting together the dates of each body with the progression of skill and the greater dismemberment.
      I think you are totally right. (How is any of this still a question?)
      Thankyou for your reply.

    If the Ripper was also responsible for the torso murders, why would he have so significantly changed his modus operandi ? Can someone explain?

    • @christerholmgren335
      @christerholmgren335 Год назад +5

      I think it was about narcissism. Although the Torso murders were every bit as gruesome as the Ripper murders, they never got anything like the press coverage that the Ripper murders did. It all began with Tabram (who may or may not have been a Ripper victim). When she was killed, there was quite a lot of press interest. And regardless if the Ripper himself was the killer or not, I think this may have sparked the idea to take his business to the open streets of London, leaving victims on display as he went along. As an aside, I believe that the reason that the body parts from the Torso murders were dumped in the western parts of London had to do with a wish on behalf of the killer to have them floating ashore in the epicenter of the largest metropolis in the world. If they had floated ashore along the sparsely inhabited parts to the east of London, they would never be as much of a sensation as if they floated ashore along the Houses of Parliament ... Anyway, this is my assumption. In this context, the Pinchin Street woman is very interesting. It was the only torso found dumped in the eastern parts of London, and it was found tight in Ripper territory. Plus it had a shallow cut all the way down the abdomen. I believe it was all about the killer being upset about not getting credit for both series. He wanted to say "Hey, you idiots, look here! I am the only mutilating killer around London!" And as fate (or not) would have it, this torso was dumped on the exact street where Lechmere spent his formative childhood years. And the railway arch in which it was found, had caused his mothers and second stepfathers lodgings to be torn down to give way for it. And when a line is drawn from that arch all the way up to 22 Doveton Street, where Charles Lechmere lived, it passes straight over the site where St Phillips church was being built in those days. And on that building site, the very day after the torso was found, a bloody apron was discovered. So we either go "WHAT a set of coincidences!" or we go "Lechmere!" Take your pick.

    At the Nichols site, Paul didn't see any blood because the street was dark and he didn't have much light. He says as much in his interview with the Lloyds paper. PC Neil had a lantern, so of course he could see the blood that Paul did not see. Griffiths in The Missing Evidence made the mistaken assumption that Paul did not see the blood and that Neil did, therefore, Ms. Nichols had bled more since Paul left and PC Neil arrived. This is not necessarily so. Paul did not see the blood because it was dark, and PC Neil did see the blood because he had a lantern.

    The cops then tho they really did have it up against them and I do feel sorry for them a little for the shit they took but the circumstances where stacked against them.

      Its not about how much evidence has gone lost, not in my view. It is about how there is still evidence enough to produce a case that would stand up in court according to a KC. How that was missed for more than a century is the real riddle. And I have to admit to having been amongst the ones who missed it for the longest time. But no more!
