We complained about annabeth not looking like annabeth in the movie so now they’re going to make annabeth and Grover look even more different 🤣
But at least this time the spirit behind her characterization is being kept. Annabeth was specifically designed as looking like a “beach blonde” (aside from her eyes) because Riordan wanted her to be a subversion of stereotypes. Similar stereotypes (in terms of intelligence) exist around black women (sadly) as used to around the concept of a “beach blonde”. Even if her appearance has totally changed, the Doylist reasoning behind her appearance remains the same.

So… the people in charge of the movie couldn’t get Annabeth right, and now the people in charge of the show can’t get her right? What is so difficult to understand about a character being blond with stormy grey eyes? And Percy? Whats with the blond hair? He’s brunette?
There is so much wrong with this trailer, it’s obvious the show is going to suck. But then, that’s par for the course with Disney these days, isn’t it?

The black Annabeth loses it some points, but it seems to have far more details and events from the book than the movie(s) did. As long as the acting is proper, I think this may turn out to be good.

It may be unpopular, but I'm not a fan of most of the casting choices based on looks alone here (I mean I've spent over 15 years picturing Annabeth as blonde and Caucasian)
That being said, I'm still going to absolutely watch this, and be more than happy to change my mind after seeing how well they portray the characters

Her looks were the least important part of her character, she was SO much more than that. As long as they give us the amazingly well-written character that is Annabeth, her skin colour does not colour. Its like you people read the books with your eyes closed if you're this offended about diversity

This is an adaptation. They're allowed to make minor changes for the sake of the new medium.
If they think a cosmetic change will be good, they should go for it.
If it turns out poorly long term, theyll be held accountable.
All in all though, if nothing about the core story changes from here being black, then theres no reason not to do it.
(Granted: there's also no reason to do it in particular. But the point still stands.)

They had the perfect opportunity to make an actually good adaptation after the absolute failure of the last few movies. And they blew it. The visuals, story, and vibe look great. The casting is the only thing that bothers me. How hard is it to match the original descriptions?

Everyone complaining about the casting clearly didn’t see Rick riordans posts. He was one of the people who selected the cast and has explicitly stated that these kids were by far the perfect choices for the role. You can be upset about the characters looking different all you want but the author of the books has already said they’re perfect.
Stop complaining and just be glad we’re getting more Percy Jackson media.
What is he going to do? Publicly come out against the casting choices and destroy his reputation and career? Of course he’s going to go along with Disney’s DEI “inclusive”casting mandates. He wants to get a pay check.

I'm way more familiar with the movie appearances than the books', but I also remember that the novel fans complained a lot for how different she looked in the movies, but now the differences are even bigger in every category.
I was a bit indifferent for the movie changes (especially compared to... well everything else), but with how faithful the series tries to be now, I just think it's really weird.

Calling people who complain about race swapping as racist is such an easy deflection. It's a shitty ass practice that's way overdone, and honestly I'm just tired of it. If people can complain about a show lacking diversity, it stands to reason that people can complain when a show has too much diversity, especially when it's forced diversity.
P.S. For those are okay with the race swapping Annabeth from white to black, would you also be okay if they cast a Black actor for Frank, or an Asian actress for Hazel? Hell what about the recasting of the seven dwarfs as non-dwarfs? See its not about race not even mattering, because if it was any other race being swapped then it would be problematic and counter productive. No, people are fine with race swapping because nowadays because it is exclusively done to white people, and now please explain to me why that's not racist/discriminatory?

No this is a streaming tv show take on the same property. There was a movie adaptation back in the day but it was terrible and done by another studio. This at least has the original book series author involved.
