    ----------------------------
Rest In Peace Michael Angelis, our narrator. Our voice of Thomas. You're already missed beyond measure. 1952-2020.
The Rev. Awdry's Railway Series is as of 12th May 2020 75 years old. To mark the occasion (although a little late!) I take a look back at what the books and TV show have meant to me growing up, appreciating how it has affected who I am today, and trying to understand just what makes it all so significant. I hope many of you will share the memories mentioned in this nostalgia trip.
I also hope this isn't too cringe-worthy! I've made this video time and time again at various stages but never been happy with the final result. As this is an important occasion, I've held my breath and just gone for it this time, so enjoy! It's made with the presumption that there will be both Thomas fans and non-Thomas fans watching, and similarly fans of the books and fans of the show.
A special thank you to Drawing425 for their permission to use various related artwork in this video, and to Tom's Railway Series Modelling, Thomas Fan Office and LewCoon for their photo contributions.
And, of course, thank you to the Awdry family and everybody along the route that has made the Island of Sodor come to life. Happy 75th!

Me being me, my brother and sisters don’t appreciate me liking Thomas, even my dad doesn’t want me to because “my friends will find me annoying”. He usually struggles to handle my opinion although I’ve liked it again for 8 months. But I’m sure he’ll appreciate me liking it once I’m out of secondary school. Thanks for teaching fans that are being judged that friends appreciate them!

@@Terrier55Stepney The true reason for Thomas's endurance is the same as Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, etc.; its roots stemmed from personal family-based situations. This combined with utmost attention to authenticity on the Rev Awdry's part, made the original books distinct enough to please Britt Allcroft to want to make their potential go further, and in turn a lot of people. I can give a credit for both Awdry and Allcroft having an intertwined effect on the inspiration for my work. Samuel F.

This is a brilliant video! As someone who is autistic, Thomas was my childhood hero. It was my favourite tv show as a kid and I loved the idea on TV and books about talking trains and a magical island. It was my favourite! I still love Thomas to this day and I'm now 23 years old. Thomas and trains have always been a big part of my life and I always found them fascinating due to how they move, click and go! Thomas and the Magic Railroad was the first film I ever watched in the cinema. Must have been like 4 or 5 years old. Loved your video and nice to hear your story!

  • @22Tesla
    @22Tesla 4 года назад +4

Heheh your reasons behind why you love Thomas is exactly the reasons I love them. And just like me, I was born in the wrong era and on the wrong continent. And like you, I think Thomas is where I learned most words that you'd NEVER hear in normal television shows. I think you captured everything that made this show the biggest thing around for all us fans.
I remember my when my mother once said she had thoughts about writing a little biography about me early years called Trains In My Bed cause she would sometimes head to bed only to find some of my Ertle trains in her bed. She knew Thomas was my life, and she always told me I should one day head to the company who makes the show since I love film. Bless her heart and soul for supporting me through my whole life with never leaving childhood behind.... RIP
Interesting story: I remember ONE time when I was in first grade, and I told the class TWO stories from Thomas (heavily paraphrased of course since I was too excited/young to be a proper story teller) "Duncan gets spooked" and "Haunted Henry." And yeah, some kids did tease me about Thomas later when we grew out of childish things, but I didn't give two cares what they had to say. I've never looked back
And like you, Thomas has paved the way for my life; going into making films and writing as well as model making.

My dear Max, you are truly speaking from my heart. You know you're watching someone who thinks quite alike when you're smiling the whole way through! :D
Our favourite show has made so many people what and who they are today, including myself. Be it as it may today, whether one might like it or not, the true legacy of the Railway Series will always live on in our hearts, I'm sure.
Also, may I say it's so wonderfully sweet to see little you playing with his toy trains and out on the Bluebell.... I must say, my story regarding all of this was quite similar! I was introduced to Thomas via TV at a very young age too, and after that it was nothing else but Thomas Wooden Railway for Christmas or birthdays! :-)
And when I visited the ZLSM (the railway I'm volunteering at today) with my family for the first time - I was three years old and it was my first time seeing a real life steam engine - it was absolutely certain that this passion for steam railway locomotives was the passion of my lifetime!
You've done a brilliant look (back) on the show and hobby we all love so dearly here. Again, you're truly speaking from my heart!
    Cheers mate!

Sadly, I have been bullied at school for liking Thomas, even forced by a teaching assistant to stop watching the show and any other show for young kids because I was getting too old for them, but fortunately, I have made plenty of friends who appreciate me and have loved Thomas themselves! And you're lucky to have found a girl who hugely supports your love for Thomas, as I don't know how I could without meeting my girlfriend (even though she is so demanding) and a woman that I made friends with who used to love watching Thomas until Mattel decided to make their changes after series 21 and take her favourite character Edward out of the spotlight just for the sake of introducing more female characters.

You inspired me to have a go at modelling too. I'm trying with a faceless one- A Railway Tugboat in no particular livery, a faceless Coast Guard Vessel from TUGS, A Tramp Steamer and a Barge- all from scratch!

I know what you mean. The first gift I was given when I was born was a vhs of the railway series (My name is Thomas, and they thought they were being very clever). As a child I was amazed at how real everything looked at the time. I would like to visit the bluebell railway in the future, but it will have to wait due to college, money, and CVS. Thank you for uploading videos of your trips and "adventures", they are very interesting.

Thank you very much for such a nostalgic and well deserved tribute video to such a wonderful piece of childhood importance.
I grew up with Thomas and still to this very day enjoy it (although I do wish the CGI series would make more fitting and better stories...sing alongs are a bit much). What’s even more personal for me is that my little nephew is into Thomas as well, which gives me great pleasure in nurturing his growing love of steam trains and the magical world of Thomas and all his friends.
Thank you for such a great video and keep up the good work 👍🏻
Now I’m going to subscribe to your channel and show my nephew your video content as I’m sure he would love to watch some new ‘homemade’ content.

Your story with Thomas reminds me of my story with it. Thomas has even inspired me to gain interest in real locomotives. I’ve started a model railway and soon I might get some Hornby and Bachmann Thomas models soon. I’m even starting my band soon so I hope to share my ideas for the show and hope to make Thomas great again.

Fantastic story about how Thomas has helped make you the person you are today! Thomas has been one of the many animated series that have inspired me to pursue animation as a potential career. All my life, the stories of both the TV series and the Books that the TV series was adapted upon were so fascinating and very captivating. Even though my work isn’t Thomas related, I remember when I was much younger that I used to have one of my Thomas tapes playing on the TV and re-enacting the story that was going on with the wooden trains that I have (which has helped me to become more interested in re-enactments). Furthermore as for my interest in the classic series, I not only persued the idea of re-enacting, but also making my own character models and sets that have helped to preserve the value of this nostalgic and beautiful art.
