- The making and testing of a homemade teardrop bike /cycle camper.
I made this micro-camper in 2016 when I retired. The color makes It not good for “stealth camper” but it is very visible in traffic. It was build along the way, without any plans or spreadsheet. Recorded with gopro Hero and gopro Hero 4
Still my favorite design of a bike camper. If I will ever do one myself it will be a copy of this. I would fasten the tarp along the edge above the door and roll it up secured with velcro when not in use. On top I would mount a flexible solar panel and in a compartment in a false bottom I would but Li-Ion batteries.
The batteries would partially be for running my ebike and partially for lightning and stuff. The kitchen would be a simple gas camping stove.
The outer walls and ceiling would be made of thins sheets of EPS with paper glued on each side with diluted PVA glue. One or both side would be reinforced with really thin "masonite" and then coated with water repellant paint. This would give stiffness, insulation and low weight.
😊👍
easily the best bike camper I've seen so far
Very nice design, simple and efficient. One change that I would make is the use of extruded aluminum channels for the frame, more expensive, but much stronger and more durable than wood. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice. Probably better aerodynamics and more room than others. I like the side entry. I'd run 20" wheels and put door on the other side.
A teardrop bicycle trailer. Wow.
I'm making a squaredrop camper at the moment myself
Liberty, Independence, Freedom! Enjoy your creation. Nice work. For stealth, just cover with a camo tarp.
I like your design best because it curves in front and back with straight sides, which has less aerodynamic drag than those which curve on side but straight front and back. It also makes more sense to have most of weight up front than at rear to minimize swaying.
Absolutely great! The best bicycle tear drop video that I've ever seen. Great and thank you,
Jimmy, Houston
Thaks Jimmy!

Get yourself a couple of those tin 100 watt solar panels, a small inverter with a battery, and now you got some portable power. Right on brother!
Thats one of the best bicycle campers i ever seen, i just think its a bit big to bike around with.. I would make one in 3 segments where you could "fold it in" in both length and width for biking.. That would be sick!
Wow looked a lot bigger once viewed from all angles. Nice! And bike towable means No gas needed. Only propane for the stove maybe, for frying up the fish.
loved it Eric, looked like it towed very nicely. a great build. well done.
Thanks Hobo!
Hi Erik , hey that's a pretty cool camper that you built there my friend !!! 👍😃
This is amazing been looking to build my own and was looking for inspiration.
merci,,,,,,,,, c'est une leçon de vie que vous nous montrez ,,,,,,,,on n'a pas besoin de beaucoup pour vivre heureux
I like that design I'm old so the big door that I can sit in is a plus
Godt gået Erik! Smadder god idé. Du bygger ligesom jeg gør: Går igang, og så ser vi, hvordan det udvikler sig. ALT GODT med det hele.
Simple, clean... I like it! Would you believe building a bicycle trailer is on my bucket list!? ;-)
Me too

Very nice project! You Danish people are really looking into it. (Wide Path Camper is also Danish).
To keep the weight down, I like Paul Elkins design, using Coroplast (flute plastic). I want to build a trailer like this, but include something like the fold option of the wide path camper. Also including a beefy solar system, to be able to charge my E-bike off-grid. Your video contributes in raising my confidence, that I'm able to tackle a project like this.
Paul Elkins, coroplast flute plastic is heavier than you think.
I know, I built a teardrop trailer using coroplast.
My base frame was made out of 1"×1" sq. aluminum (very light & strong).
I used 20" 1.35 tires, lighter than normal 1.50 tires.
And when finally done, it weighed 43-45 lbs. empty.
I figured that with all my gear it would be way too heavy.
So... I tore it all down, and am going to have a upholstery shop make the rip stop nylon covering the teardrop frame that I made already.
What are the dimensions and material you used to create it? Absolutely fantastic work!
A great build Erik !
Awesome, inspired to build my own !
This is so cool ! Well done !
So cute, such a lovely dream ride.
Awesome build!
XCLent! a 40 watt bendable solar panel will give enough electric to charge cell phones, laptops and computers. I plan on building one so that I can take incredibly long ride on my Ebike and triple my range!
very nice
So cool. You could also use a mosquito net for sleeping
The lap of luxury!
Nice and cosy build!
Bellissimo bici camper 🤗
A common mistake people make is when it comes to the wheel set-up, whether it's a thru-axle, or utilizing bicycle rims & tires(as shown) ...is when creating a thru-axle it's wise to use at least a 1 inch thick galvenized steel rod, which can be threaded, or drilled to fit cutter pins. Also using wheels that can support at least twice the rider's body weight. But in case of using bicycling rims & tires(as shown in this video), it helps to know the weight capacity the rims & wheels can hold. Personally? ...I would suggest tandem rims, which the heavy duty one's have a 600 lb.-capacity. It may be a bit much(depending on your load), but figure that overkill is underrated. As far as your tires? ...some will say go tubeless and some with suggest otherwise --the truth is whatever you're most comfortable with. And if you want to have the option to go with either, then go with tubeless rims , because you can ride them tubeless as well as fitting them with tubes.
Another consideration ...is painting it with reflective paint. Of-course the base coat is rubberized and that will help with any gaps or cracks where water can leak through. But the reflective paint will help with keeping it cooler inside and it'll provide more visibility to the rider.
78 kg.. the tyres are 700x35, and thats because bigger tires roll easyer over potholes + the floor is higher when sitting ind the door.
the cabin is 90 cm and the roof 100 cm
Hi what size timber for chassis?
for sale lol haha
What is the width?
The manner of wheel attachment to the frame seems likely to fail. It appears the entire weight of everything is suspended by the threads of screws. Did it need repairs within a few hundred km of use?
So nice! And it would be possible to put solar panels on the roof and a small engine on the trailer wheels, and it would push you around :-)
Jan Sveen Si jgvx atjblligfvxdcl 😇😈😉😉😯😐☺😊😀😁😂😃😄😅😑😠😬😡😢😴😮😣😤
Wow this was so awesome! I wish it was possible to purchase these. Im not very handy haha.
Nice ❤👍
Fresh, cool air in the heat? Thanks for showing this.
Beautiefully done.
Wish I had a guy handy enough to make me one
Wow, cool!!!
Cool 😍
That's Purdy cool!
It looks very good, but is it hot and difficult under the hot summer sun?
And I am concerned that I can endure the cold in the deep winter of the midwinter, but it seems that I can cope more than the summer.
Perfecto bro, with are the measures???
that's so cool!
It's fabulous!
really awesome!
AWESOME!!!
I'm going to build this!
The solution on how to return to nomadic life is to tow a trailer on a motorbike which is a box designed to fold flat into a circular platform for yurt!
thanks
Супер! Super
Lovely, i have been thinking for something light for my motorcycle, its 19hp and i have to go over mountains (good roads ).
Very nice thanks!
That music is DIRE!!!
Wonderful!!
This song is the Danish National Anthem
Very cool 😎
nice work
Davs Eric!! Skønt camping vogn !🙂👍
Hi Erik, I like the idea but I have one serious question. Your trailer hitch only seems to allow for sideways movement, so how does your bike lean when taking turns?
Does this rather rigid constructrion not exert excessive force on the hitch?
Hi Jeroen
The trailer does allow sidewards movement, the white stick at the bottum will move sidewards when you turn
Erik straarup. I have a question. How big is this trailer I'm looking forward to making this soon but I just need the measurement. Please tell me I would love it. Oh and you have a new follower😀
THANKS
i love it
You have a lovely Giant there, Erik. Were you ever tempted to get an e-bike to help get the trailer up hills? :)
I'm gradually catching up with your videos, apologies if you have an e-bike now!
No, I would not have a e-bike yet, maybe when I get old :-)
Are you using this within the UK or are you somewhere else and this looks grate iv been thinking of making one for so long can you shear your plans and what did you have to spend in making this
I use it in Denmark and build it just after my head as I went along, so no plans. It cost me around 750 us$
Genial 👍
I bet on a bike path you feel like the dingbat with the three wide baby stroller.
Could you hook up a battery to your pedals and charge it while you ride?
I would very much love the specs to build this.
Hi Dustin there are no specs, a just made it , some details might be found in the comments below.
Cool.
Have you got plans for the making on paper? I really want to build one like yours for myself. I ride a recumbent trike, and a camper like yours would be great for touring...
No sorry,, no plan, just made it from an idea in my head..
the best IV seen. for all that weight ID just take a tent and an extra blanket. this would need solar power, air condition, and electric hub motors for me to see the point
Hi Erik, did you also try the trailer on a bit more steep road (uphill)? Also, your trailer weighs 78 kg empty or also with your personal things inside? I've also built a trailer and I am planning a longer trip of around 1500 km. However, i didn't have time to test it yet (the trailer is about 55 kg) and i want to carry my 25 kg dog with me, in the trailer. I don't know how difficult it will be to go on more uphill sections from the route..Thank you, it would be really useful to know your opinion:)
Hi Dorin I have tried it on some steep roads and it is indeed possible if you have small gears on your bike as I have on my mountainbike. Its slow going but who carres :-) With all my gear it probely weight about 100 kg.
Thank you for your fast reply! :) It does not matter if it is slow, I have time:) I will buy a bike soon and will make sure I have small gears too:) Thank you a lot Erik, I was beginning to worry that it will be too hard to carry such a trailer, after all the resources invested to build it:) I know it will be hard uphill, but at least there are chances I will not start moving backwards, even though I added some bike brakes (I have to see how I will use the system simultaneously with the ..carrier bike) :) I made one similar to this - www.bicyclecaravan.com/bicycle-caravan-trailer-2/
excelente congratulations , as weighs de kamper? is for mothorcicle as 150 cc
thankyou
78 kg, Do not tow it after a motorcycle :-)
Hi Erik great camper would share the width and length..?
1m with and 2.20 m lengt
Where is for me in Italy?? ^__^
Any one know what was brackets were used for the wheels?
tam da yanından karavan geçmesi enterasan dı üstünü neyle kabladınız
How much did it cost to make? You should go into business of making them to sell. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
About 750 US $
very awesome what did the build cost anyway??
Darren Halkett i build a micro Camper and i will to show you how it cost
How much I want to do too
very cool working on a bike camper as well not quite like yours but I hope it looks as slick as yours let me know how it camps! check out my builds too
Do you have any recommendations on building this to be collapsible?
is there a way to buy thing or get you to make plans so i can make one
How have you weatherproofed the walls and the roof where they meet
With silicone
Nice one Eric. How much does it weigh?
78 kg, so not a lightweight one :-)
+Erik Straarup the real wobble test is when you go down hill at speed but I guess you won't be doin that. :) I like the bob trailer hitch haha. I have one of those plus my other bed frame DIY one. May be I need to make one like you. Happy Camping dude.
What is the weight opf the camper?
how much did to all cost
thank you
About 750 US $
I want make one like yours ,can you sale de the building instructions?
Hi palonso, I just made it on top of my head, I have no building instructions.
The size of the timber is 20x42 mm.
Erik Straarup how does the trailer go in off-road/bumpy conditions??
You have to go slow, but I have recently changede the tires to mountainbike tires, and that helped a little.
Erik Straarup thnx!
Erik Straarup I was going to suggest fat bike tires as they compensate for the lack of suspension at speed when going down hill,
I have mtb tires on it now 26" x 2.10
hi! is it on sell? or might I order it somehow?
it is possible to tow a motorcycle?
cool👍
Está bonito, pero para ir solo te asaltan en México
How is the temperature in?
great,...unfortunately I have to build one to LIVE in, with a Great Dane,....because I cannot afford rent, and the Cops like to arrest people for trespassing, if you camp in one spot.
....I need to incorporate some sort of a slide out, .....for the pooch.
In England we give free homes, health care, and money to those who want it
In England, people also stab people and throw acid on everyone else, and you throw people into giant towers built cheaply so high nobody can reach even half way up when they inevitably catch fire and go up like a Roman candle.... I'd rather a teardrop trailer than English style socialism thank you very much.
The music though
Den er fed Erik. Men 78 kg lyder ret tungt, man må næsten kunne barbere en del af.
It s not easier a tent and panniers ?
There are definitely advantages to both. The trailer is a ready to go sleeping area that is off the ground, a decently sized tent allows you to bring your bike in at night for security.
@
Erik Straarup , how much does it weight?
78 kg
