Floyd did it his entire career, so can you really blame young fighters like Broner and Tank for saying, "Floyd had it easy and made millions, I want the easy road in boxing too! Just line me up with cherry picked fights, find me good 'on paper' opponents like 'multi-division champion Robert Guerrero' and fighters like that who still have no way of really beating faster guys at higher weight classes because they dont have the knockout power there, and just let me wrack up all the 'records' on paper like Floyd which are actually meaningless, and all the dumb fanboys out there will think I'm amazing just like Floyd and start buying my PPVs.'
Cherry picking made Floyd a billionaire, but it was the worst thing to happen to BOXING because OBVIOUSLY if it made Floyd a billionaire, you are going to have a whole new generation of young boxers thinking, "if Cherry picking made him a billionaire, then I want to cherry pick too!"
But in reality, it doesn't work like that. Floyd became a PPV star because of timing. Because he caught Oscar when he was old, Arturo Gatti when he was old, lots of stars like that which Floyd built his name off of, and then an actual exciting fighter came along at the same time as Floyd, Manny Pacquiao, a fighter who actually attracted fans to boxing rather than repelling them like Floyd did, and Floyd was smart enough to attach his name to every single Manny Pacquiao fight and build a rivalry with the most popular fighter in the sport, which in turn made Floyd very popular, just as the villain to Pacquiao.
It was a shitty thing to do, leeching off someone else's hard work, leeching off all the wars Pacquiao gave fans in the ring, all that excitement, while Floyd provided no wars and very little excitement of his own.
And now, he seems to be trying to use Lomachenko the exact way. Lomachenko is busy fighting the best, taking risks, putting in work, providing excitement, and calling out the best. Tank isn't taking any risks, isn't fighting any exciting fights, and isn't calling out the best, so they are trying to use the fact Lomachenko is doing all that work that Tank isn't willing to do to build Tank's career off of Loma's name and Loma's work.
It's complete bullshit, and it's shit like this that is ruining boxing. Andre Ward did the same thing with GGG during Ward's first mini-retirement. Ward was suing his promoter and barely fighting, while GGG was fighting 4 times a year. This guy from Khazakstan was putting in more work than Ward, and providing way more excitement than Ward, so what did Ward do? Ward tried to leech off GGG's momentum by claiming that GGG was ducking him, when in fact Ward admitted he could barely make 175 pounds at that time, let alone 168. GGG fights at 160.
That's the trend now, all these American fighters ducking the best, watching foreign fighters actually take all the challenges, but then they try to leech off the work the foreign fighters do and keep their name attached to the top level of the sport, even though they're not fighting any of the top guys to deserve to be part of that level of the sport.
It really is fucked up. I'm American, but I have to admit, it's fucked up. I miss the days when Americans truly ruled boxing, instead of pretending to. I miss the days when Frazier, Ali, SRL, Hagler, Hearns, and so many others ALL FOUGHT THE BEST. They didn't have to LEECH off the best because they WERE the best. But it ain't like that no more. For every truly great American fighter willing to take risks, there are a hundred PHONIES who do nothing but duck the best and then use fans ignorance about what is really going on, and the bias of the fans, to LEECH off the best. It's time American boxing fans stood up and started exposing this shit because it is running the sport of boxing into the ground, along with America's reputation.
