- During my visit to Nicko McBrain's Drum One a few weeks back, I managed to grab some footage of the man himself making some glorious noise behind the kit! Here's the snaps of footage I managed to get - 'Where Eagles Dare' and a cheeky little drum solo!
I was also lucky enough to win the monthly raffle to play this very kit!

This man was born in 1952 and STILL plays for a metal band to this day. It's absolutely unbelievable.
His stamina is awesome. Unstoppable.
He has earned a value over 50 Million Euro´s with this Band.

Unbelievable???? What on Earth are you nonsening about??? Quite normal that people continie in their jobs. Nothing "unbelievable" about that, nothing at all. It would, however, be atypical if he changed his ways, and became a baker, or apprenticed as a mason in his +60 years of age. Not unheard of, but atypical.
Continue at his job as a drummer is the norm. Are you very young? That could explain your little ooopss here.
Nicko is 66-years-old, and still killing it behind the kit. Amazing.

Lars said himself he doesn't like to sit and drum on his own... Explains a fucking lot...
He's like a broken metronome that hasn't been serviced for about 20 years now. - Sad. He was a great example to me on any recording up until and including 'St. Anger'. - He still put some good stuff on the two albums after that (although you can still hear/feel him rush on "Deaf Magnetic"), but live... Not the same person.
Fortunately age has little to do with playing musical instruments. It's not an athletic event. 👍

There are surely drummers that are better, faster, more technical, ... but who cares. You can see that the man lives and enjoys music with every cell of his body.
Such a humble and fun person. For me he's a living legend!

And its like the "better" drummers could fill in his place and do it as good as he does
He's got groove and "feel", which for a lot of music is better than speed and technicality.
Everyone can be faster and better and better..... but cant enyone be so cool and comfortable like nico thats why he is legend.... he can play in the top level and he is cool he dont even think what is he doing and if he thinks you cant understand it....
I think today there are a lot of technical better drummers than the old guys like him, Nick Mason or many others. But when i sometimes hear actual band especially metal bands i always have the impression 4 ore more individuals play their instrument and show what they can do. But there is no music anymore coming out of this.

Nicko has been a part of my life from my mid-teens to now being middle-aged in my 50's and he's still rockin'! God that makes me so happy. Fortunate to see him play live twice as a young man - one was the Powerslave tour. The giant Eddie stretching across the stage as Bruce ran from stack to stack on each side. Greatest metal performers I've ever seen. Thank you Nicko!
The man is a monster player ,a gentleman,and plays in the greatest Heavy Metal band in the world for more than 35 years,what more can we say!
Drumming looks so easy when Im watching him. True legend!
Drumming isn't that hard. Don't hold the sticks too tightly and practice consistently (hopefully under the guidance of a qualified teacher) and you can do what he's doing relatively easily.
@@adityatyagi4009 "Relatively easily" I don't want to crush anyone's dreams but there's so much more to drumming than just not holding your sticks too tightly and practicing. You didn't even say anything about the common 40 rudiments to be learned, and also not to mention when you hit a rut. Almost anything is possible but it won't always come as easily as it may seem.
@@yoboisteven1741 I mentioned "qualified teacher" who will most likely teach all the rudiments and a whole lot more. Lazy students will not achieve much success. Proper practice is essential. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
@@adityatyagi4009 Good luck to you too. They say theirs no such thing as a bad student, just bad teachers but I would have to disagree, I know people who are foolish enough to spend $20 a week for a 30 minute drum lesson just for them to not practice. You get out of drumming what you put in.
@@yoboisteven1741 Yes, I agree that there are bad students. I've done teaching and I really can't stand teaching students who don't practice and think the lesson is their practice time where I do the hand holding. Self motivated students are the best.
One of my favorite drum intros of all time. So original and identifiable. It’s one of those must know fills.
Yeah this is certainly one of the inconic ones... I remember spending weeks upon weeks learning that fill, practicing the triplets and then quadruplets in the middle section! I was in an Iron Maiden tribure band for quite a few years and was gutted we never got to do this one live!

I gave it a thumbs up simply cause hes awesome with 1 bass drum. He's got about the best single foot bass playing around hands down. Hes right up there with John Bonham in single foot playing in my opinion.

Whenever I am cycling through dozens of drum vids, I always seem to end up watching Nicko over and over again, simply fascinating.
That's always been such a killer groove! Piece of Mind was my 1st Maiden cassette ever.

It was mine too! Well, technically the first Maiden album I listened to. I bought Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast at the same time. Listened to POM first. I bought them because of the cover art. That’s usually how I went about finding new music back in the 80’s.

He is a LOT faster (especially on single strokes) and better than one could expect. Very tasteful playing there.
As a lifelong drummer myself I can honestly say that this guy BLOWS............past anything I could ever dream of doing on a kit. I've seen him live and he's phenomenal. Up the GD Irons ! Rock on 🤘
I like his rare power and his tasty and soulful playing. He plays with finesse and creativity, sometimes he does utterly crazy things. He never sounds boring. What a great Drummer!

In the 80s i listened to Maiden...
My favorite album was piece of mind..i listened to Where Eagles Dare thousands of times..then in like 2002..i was asleep on the couch and left the 📺 Tv on.
I usually dont wake easily..
But i hear an Old man say
"The cable car is the only way in its Really impossible to climb"
I rolled over to stare at the Tv ..
And it was an old movie
Where Eagles Dare..
Then i realized that the song was written about the movie...as was Dune ,Quest for Fire. And others..
Got to see maiden live finally back in 2001..still one of my favorites..
Every drummer have their owned style of drumming. Nicko's technique is very rare. His wrist is amazing

I bought myself a new Paiste Ride cymbal while I was down there and won the raffle to play his kit! We went back down there last week and the videos will be up very soon! Stay tuuuuuuned! 😁
I love hearing raw acoustic drumming. And when It's Nicko Mcbrain it's even better. I met the late Clive Burr years ago and he was very cool. Seems Maidens drummers are cool. Thanks for putting this Video up...You can tell Nicko is having fun. He's always smiling and looks so relaxed.

I just watched a video on Lars Ulrich, then needed to restore my faith in drumming, Nicko is a legend.

That's just Nicko's "drum face". He always looks like he's about to have an embolism while playing.
It would be better for him to use double-bass, but he keeps his trademark with one foot playing.

I was there. I remember the drum kit sounded amazing. Especially as it was on a riser, the bass drum was about waist height.
I’m so glad he’s back with Sonor. I love this old phonic plus hi-tech kit and of course love his two recent S2Q kits. I agree with him. I miss the sound of the Ludwig silver dot heads on the Sonors. My favorite metal/progressive hard rock drummer. He’s been a huge influence since I was a kid learning to play in 1983. He’s brilliant.

I play in a Maiden tribute called ACES HIGH here in Dayton OH and I can admit that Eagles is the hardest Maiden song for me to play because there’s no break, and the main beat is just tricky with that backwards thing that Nicko does, plus it’s just a busy f’n song. BUT I LOVE IT!

EvilAlbear there is no one best drummer. But chris Coleman, Virgil donati, Matt garstka are three who are up there in a lot of people’s eyes. You can throw in Tony royster, Ronald Bruner, mark guiliana, Benny greb, thomas Lang, Gavin harrison, too many to name. All different styles and brings different things to the table.
