This video is a detailed description of Amethyst Falls Wisteria. Amethyst Falls is a less aggressive Wisteria variety that is easy to keep under control. It is a vine that gets clusters of purple flowers in the mid spring with some residual flowers in the summer. Amethyst Falls Wisteria is a sterile variety so it will not seed itself into other areas.

I just bought one that looks exactly like this demo for $60.00 at Lowe’s (5/2022) it is very pretty and healthy! I hope it will give me lot of flowers and will fill the fence quick .
Wish to find another one to add to the other end of the fence!

Many thanks. I've just bought this wisteria hoping it could stand up to another drought if one should come along. We do seem to be getting reasonable rainfall tho this year. We are going to be buying a gothic gazebo a centre piece for our new garden and the wisteria will be allowed to climb it. I'm so grateful for those who post with their expertise for people to freely learn from. Thanks again.

Thanks, Jim. I biught a wisteria (not this one, unfortunately) over a year ago and it is still in the nursery pot because it was an impulse buy and I didnt have a plan for where to put it. At one point, i thought maybe i would have it in a trellis against the house, but i have siding and that just felt dangerous. I know they can kill trees and i dont want to risk that. So, still dont know what to do with it. I would very much appreciate if you could do a video that explains in great detail exactly how to train them to tree form. Thank you!

Hi Jim I just ordered Amethyst last evening from Fast Growing Trees. I have full 6-8 hours of full sun directly. I have a white vinyl fence that wraps around my yard. I wonder if I should plant it as a vine or a tree. I am leaning towards a tree because I don't want to poke anything on the fence. Or I can have it wrap around my deck. I will prune it every year because I know they are super fast growers.

We planted 5 of what was labeled 'Amethyst Falls' (by a big Louisiana grower notorious for haphazard labeling). The leaves are slightly more glossy, with slightly less-pronounced veination than yours, and a slightly more yellow green. The flowers are slightly less 'organized' than the Amethyst Falls we see in pictures, and the color is a much deeper violet. Also, the fragrance is definitely not 'Lavender', as I've read in one place. And it isn't "slight", either. It's a rich grape jelly/Kool-Aid/purple candy fragrance (like Kudzu, actually), which 'travels' several feet, and is remarked-upon by visitors. I'm definitely not complaining. We bought the plants, because of the rich yellow-green (and even keyed an accent paint color to it - Sherwin Williams 'Sassy Green', we love it so much). Same with the bloom color and the fragrance (and the bloom time - mid-summer until cool weather has set-in - a time when blooms are scarce, around the Louisiana house). The growth habit seems the same as 'Amethyst Falls', but WHAT DO WE HAVE? All five of our plants seem identical, and so they're probably not seed-grown. But what on earth did the Grower propagate? Are there other famous cultivars of Wisteria Frutescens? (aside from 'Longwood Purple', which, unlike ours, has leaves exactly like 'Amethyst Falls')?
But specific to YOUR plant, landscapers down here use it a lot, for their better clients, and nobody has anything to say about 'Amethyst Falls', except how much they love it. It's considered the "no-worries, won't-eat-your-house" option.

Hi!!! I bought mine a couple of weeks ago and was blooming a whole lot about the size of yours. I went ahead and put it in full sun as I researched and was told full sun. A bit confused becouse at the nursery I bought from they were under a tree getting dapppled sun light. After a week my blooms dried up and fell off all of them. Contacted the nursery here in North Carolina and told me to just give it morning sun preferably. I moved it in an area with only morning sun I’m noticing growth and looks like buds.My question is do you have any idea what happened should I keep it in full sun and could it bloom again?

Not to burst your bubble, but you may be waiting a LONG time for that thing to flower, if at all. Cutting grow plants are far more reliable. They take about 3 years to flower, so I'd say that would be about how old the one in the video is.

Laura B laura, make sure you buy one that is flowering when you buy it. Then you know you wont have to wait. Generally speaking, i think the grafted ones are going to flower right away but many propagated from cuttings will take years to bloom.

How thick and heavy do these vines get? I bought one to put on a vinyl fence with a latticed top, but I’m afraid it will thicken and either break through the fence or become too heavy and the weight will destroy it. This happened to my parents who bought one, but I think it might have been one of the Chinese or Japanese varieties. I love it and can’t wait to plant it, but I don’t want it causing several thousand dollars worth of fence damage. Please help!

Wisteria of any kind would likely be tough on a vinyl fence over time. You may want to reinforce the fence where you are planting it.
