- Air France has been supporting development in French Polynesia for the past 50 years. On this route, Air France has always operated its most recent aircraft, such as the Boeing 707 in the sixties, the Boeing 747 in the eighties and the Boeing B777-200 since 2006.
In 1960, Air France, in association with the airline TAI, was granted the right to operate between Papeete, Honolulu and Los Angeles. In 1961, the first non-stop flight was operated by DC8 between Los Angeles and Papeete.
In the seventies, UTA launched the Paris, Athens, Colombo, Bangkok, Sydney, Papeete route on departure from Le Bourget every Wednesday.
In 1973, Air France launched a round-the-world Paris, Lima, Papeete, Tokyo, Paris route by Boeing 707.
In 1986, Air France started operating the Paris-Tahiti route via Los Angeles by Boeing 747 and in 1989, offered a Paris, Los Angeles, Papeete, Tokyo, Paris service with the same type of aircraft.
In 2000, the stewardesses working on this route started wearing the traditional Polynesian dress (purutu) to offer passengers a foretaste of their destination.
In 2002, a code-share agreement was signed between Air France and Air Tahiti Nui, offering Air France passengers two additional frequencies every week between Paris and Papeete operated by Air Tahiti, in addition to the flights operated by Air France.
Today, Air France offers 4 flights a week between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Papeete, operated by Airbus A340 or Boeing 777-200 ER, with a stopover in Los Angeles.
