  • In this unexpected moment, a leopard catches a jackal that is busy hunting a flock of doves! This unbelievable sighting unravelled in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

    Digital marketing strategist and wildlife enthusiast, Bertie van Greunen and his wife Ria witnessed this amazing scene and shared their story with LatestSightings.com:

    "Early morning on the 19th of June 2022, on our last day at Polentswa, we were woken up by a cheetah call and decided to take a drive. We saw the cheetah on the ridge, but never got a clear view so after 20 minutes we decided to go to the waterhole where two jackals had been very entertaining - as we had come to learn over our trip."
    "It was a beautiful morning when we turned onto the road towards the Polentswa waterhole. What happened next was truly one of those moments when your heart starts pumping at a rate as if you were doing a marathon."
    "We both spotted the leopardess called Olebeli at the same time. We slowly drove in and she was sitting upright, looking towards a herd of springboks that were just leaving the waterhole. And of course, the many doves that come and go to drink water. The daily ritual then began where the two jackals started stalking the doves."
    "The doves came in for a landing, and the two jackals prepared for an interception in hopes of enjoying an early breakfast. What they didn’t know was that another hunter’s menu looked very different from theirs. One of the jackals made a few attempts while Olebeli was lying in the grass. The jackal had another go and jumped, but whilst air-born Olebeli took off at the same time and there was nothing he could do to escape."
    "He was helpless in the air and the timing of the leopard was spot on. The jackal knew he was in trouble and had no chance."
    "The other jackal jumped up and down and alarm-called but there was nothing he could do. Olebeli grabbed the jackal by the throat and took off with her catch. I quickly switched on the vehicle and reversed like crazy to get into the main road to see if we could still catch a glimpse of her and her prey."
    "We saw her crossing the road as predicted then she jumped up onto the side of the road and looked back at us one last time while holding onto the jackal. Sadly, that was the end of the jackal. Driving back to our campsite in Polentswa, we could not believe what we just experienced."
    "Later that afternoon we went back to the waterhole and saw the jackal's friend was still looking for him and which brought some tears to both my wife and me. It was such a unique sighting, but very emotional at the same time and perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. This is for sure an experience my wife and I will never forget. That’s why we keep on going back and have done so for the last 10 plus years."

    • @diligenceeke3023
      @diligenceeke3023 2 года назад +6

      You ancestors were strong muscular men. These animals including the lion and tiger were no match for them. Documented evidence showed some of your ancestors killed these predators with bare hands. Even recently a man fought a lion somewhere in Kenya and though the lion ripped him serious injuries with blood everywhere, he killed the huge male lion. No weapons. He came home and saw the lion near his compound where his children were asleep.
      These days we exchanged intelligence for muscles. And intelligence is actually the highest of them all.

    • @sym4lv
      @sym4lv 2 года назад +17

      @@diligenceeke3023 hey, do you realize how much musculature difference there is between even the strongest and most athletic and performing human being and a big cat? Even a cougar or a leopard would be no match, imagine a lion or a tiger! It would be like as if I'm asking you to outpower and break the neck of a cape bull (the average bite force of a male lion is around 1000 psi, our average is around 170) turning it to the ground, only with the effort of your physical capability, or to catch an impala at full speed, something like around 50/60 km/h! Our ancestors (and it depends to whom you're referring to, because the Homo genre had many species through his evolutionary process) were undoubtedly more powerful and stronger than us, for example the Neanderthals, but still they were physically limited, in terms of bare arms, to match against felidaes!
      That's, in fact, one of the biggest reason we actually started to develop weapons, from wooden sticks to bow and arrow, for being able to confront us with such an outpowering environment and indeed hunting in a way more efficient way, starting to compete with them.
      That's the point in which we succeed against big cats, in terms of efficiency, when, as you said as well, our brains capabilities and so our first rudimental weapons and tools, gave us the resources to survive and develop properly. But in terms of pure physical strength, none of the Homo species has never been superior to a big cat!
      Some apes can be though, like gorillas, for example, but it always depends by the environmental context of course.

    • @francissantos7448
      @francissantos7448 2 года назад

      @@sym4lv I agree with your assessment. Cats' hunting techniques are triggered by fleeing prey. When upright bipedal creatures had hands available for a stick or a rock against predators, the tide against being a prey species began to end. Australopithecines probably were at home in the open plains as family groups armed with clubs and ability to throw rocks with accuracy. With fire and stone tools, Homo Habilis was probably given a wide berth. By the time of Homo Erectus all animals flee at the sight of them.

      @@sym4lv You are missing something. The big cats of today are nothing compared to dinosaurs and other humongous animals of old. Did you ever know that some humans were as tall as 16 - 20 feet? And they were big balls of muscles. Just a smash of the arm or club on a cat and it would be dead in a second. And the men of old had otherworldly means by which they dealt with lesser consciousness (animals).
