I literally just picked up a 10x10 kennel today to do exactly this. Had no idea how I was gonna put a roof on it so I started watching some youtube. Seriously the easiest way I've seen yet. And I have no experience building so this makes sense and is easy enough I can do it. Thanks so much for this video!
Yeah not a problem. A 10x10 kennel will last for a very long time. Just put it how you want the water 💧 to slop on the piece of ground and there shouldn't be a problem. Every now and again you will have to move it or it will sink into the ground. So just go to a corner of it and push up and over then walk to the other side and do the same. Thanks again glad ☺ I could help..
I like what you did to your chicken co-op. I have one just like yours chain. Length and I put clock up there. So the chickens couldn't get out well. The wind tore it apart, so your idea is great.
I have 2 lots together no center gate so it's 10' x 20' with tarp roof wanting to do roof love the way you done this easy enough I can do myself . One thing I was wanting to have one side of roof to tilt a little to catch rain water so should I have the wood on one side up a little higher so gravity takes does it's job. Hope this made since.
yes! directly into the metal the screws are shown @ 1:46 in the video (this is Nickie answering but I`m pretty sure its call metal taping screws they are ment to go through the metal and the ones we used are 2 1/2 in long thanks for watching!!
Hell YA Man; Looks Great. I have a 10x10 Gazebo. I think the dog kennel idea is the best and cheapest way to go. You and yur flock of birds look awesome. Hugs Tobias RW Brown Eloy AZ
Thank you for doing this! We got some fence panels for free. I don’t even think they are from a kennel. This helps with figuring out the roof. Now I just need to figure out the 4th panel. I don’t have a panel with the gate integrated. I have 4 full panels, with no allowance for a gate on the 4th panel
Can you tell me if you're are drilling threw the board INTO the metal? Is the screw coming through the metal and sticking out on the other side? If not, can you tell me how long are the metal screws and what kind did you use? Thanks
What do you use for digging predators? I used 4' of hardware cloth folded into an "L" shape and attached one side to outside bottom of the pen and pinned the other side to the ground, so 2' up and 2' out. That takes care of thing reaching in and digging. In the warm weather they like to sleep outside the coop sometime, so I never put anything up against the sides of the pen that the hens can sit on so I don't have to worry about something grabbing them while they sleep.
So, here at our homestead Frankie will often move the pen a bit to get away from any whole that have been dug however (I full well understand not everyone can do that) You are completely right with the 4 ft wire into and L! (At least that`s what we would do if it became a problem for us. We don`t use very many "coops" so ours are always outside on a roost, the roost goes diagonally across the pen so there are only 2 places something could reach in a grab one (on the ends) for these two areas we tie a big square of wire where the roost is so nothing can climb up and reach through. At least not easily. Winter is coming up and we will put out a video of our nest boxes and predator protection soon!! Thank you so much for watching!!
Thanks so much for watching!! When they get older in addition to putting up a roost, this is what we do!! ruclips.net/video/sdtb0yT7fpQ/видео.html and in the winter we do this to keep some of the wind off (for this you need to have a good idea which way your wind comes from) ruclips.net/video/VaJ2i2LPDx4/видео.html Hope these help!!
yes there are 2 ways we winterize, one, you can put tin on the sides and the other is a tarp or heavy duty plastic zip tied (we do have a video on winterizing and you could wrap the whole thing if you wanted to we just block where the wind comes from... and the nest boxes we have several ways as well we will do a video on those soon, one and our most used is we built a shelf in the corner of where its winterized and set a milk crate or whatever nesting box you prefer on said shelf, another is we have a small double nesting box hutch style that can be moved as we move the kennel to new grass... there are several more that we use as well, Be looking for a video on our nest boxes for kennels we will go into further detail and our preferences, thanks so much for watching!! Sorry the reply is so long... ruclips.net/video/VaJ2i2LPDx4/видео.html
That should be good I would put a patch where the roost is. Coons especially can climb the kennels, they end up scaring the chickens to the ground and that`s often how they reach through and get them that`s why the two feet protection from the ground up works so well. Thanks for watching!
Yes they do they are called self-tapping metal screws. Screw it through the wood into the metal, it can be kind of tricky to get it lined up but once you get it definitely holds. An extra hand is very helpful lol. You will be able to feel when it catches!!
Franky need winter help 🙏, ha Cleveland just got blasted. We have had 2 storms since i built your idea. So people know, one a month ago had 70m winds and rain. Yesterday worst snow in a log time 4ft, started as rain. Super heavy! The roof held 👍, bowed but like you said I'll add more beams.
We tend to keep these moved even if its a foot or so at the time so we don't have an issue with diggers, but if we did I`m almost sure chicken wire would be involved... probably flaps tacked into the ground running out from the cage at least 6-8 in. to deter digging (and a good question since most people will not be moving these pens.)
Just the bottom and we recomend putting something around your roosts so nothing can climb up and grab the chickens so wire, plastic, a board whatever you feel like tacking up around the roosts. Thanks for watching!!!
@@rubyhomestead9109 well me and my special needs sister put the 10x10 roof on using galvanized strapping as they were out of self tapping screws that were long enough. I think I just needed to brag! LOL

@@rubyhomestead9109 I was just curious. I've been watching a lot of RUclips videos on chicken coops and that was a main concern. Thank you for sharing your video.
If want to slant it, use 2x10x10 on one side 2x6x10 in middle 2x4x10 on opposite side if you want a slope roof. Awesome video btw

I have the same question. Is like to see a roof done with an angle so RAiN run off Will Be Directed away from the coop.
Very cheap and cost effective idea. But technically that's a shaded chicken pen. Great job!!!!
Thanks for watching lol It is and they love the shade!
Did you screw the wood directly into the metal bar? What kind of screw did you use?

Shouldn’t the roof slant to repel snow and rain?

Yes it's threw the 2x4 into the metal. They are 2 1/2 inch screws. Thanks for watching 👀 🙂. If you have any questions please feel free to ask 😊 😀.
Plz excuse me, Ruby and Chava but a little correction: through rather than threw. Enjoyed the vid

Flat roof doesnt cause any issues with pooling the rain or too much weight from snow!?
No problem here. Are grounds not flat so it has a slop. Thanks for asking and comments

What length and width tin for roof?
12 ft long and 2ft wide. Thanks for the comment.
About how much is that roofing just curious. I can’t find it on website
If you buy it new it's about 140$. But if you can find some used 12ft tin that will help. That's the most expensive part
