I was really touched by how much this scene seemed to affect the readers of my DRV3 fic Amalgamate, and because this scene was so important to me, I decided to make an illustration for it. It was all done traditionally up until the very end, so I made this process video to also show how the art came together

This potrays how he felt so well, I feel like. Trapped by the strings that connect him to the moniters, forced to have his skeleton of truths on display and unable to hide in the skin and muscle of lies he built up around it. The tons of strings around his neck are choking him, forcing him to remember that people can see how he really feels regardless of if he can muster up a mask to hide it. And I think I might be wrong on this, but the string is red, just like the thread that Tsumugi threaded into Kokichi's skin. I just noticed that, and that feels so much worse to think about. There's threads that caused him so much pain, almost causing the end of his life, and now theres the string from the monitors making him panic and hurt even more. Even outside of the killing game, Kokichi's mind still finds ways to hurt him, the poor thing. To T
And the fact that he's tied to a chair is just a cheery on top of this Despair Sunday. I remember the concept of Kokichi's execution, and I saw it just now, and how it's similar. Kokichi's execution revolves around the fact that Kokichi will always keep up his lies, even if it causes his death, and him being in a chair now as if he feels like the thought if people seeing how he truly feels is killing him, when in reality, he's only killing himself by panicking and not letting others help him.
I just felt like expressing more, so hopefully that didn't feel like a needless rant. I love the art though, it really potrays how horrifying this scene was for him. To T
Aaaa thank you!!! I'm so glad you love the art so much! And you perfectly summed up the scene as well as the emotions I was trying to convey through this illustration. You're absolutely right about the red string, too. In a way, Kokichi's mind still hasn't left the game. The red thread that was killing him is still there for him mentally because even now, he feels like he's weakened and dying in front of viewers he can't escape from. During the game, Kokichi tried so hard to seem strong despite the poison, but now he can't even put up a facade at all. I feel so awful for him ;_;
But I'm so glad you noticed that the art evokes the image of Kokichi's fanmade execution! That's exactly what I was going for, but I had no idea if anyone would notice! I was a little worried some people might think my drawing was "inaccurate" because it depicts Kokichi sitting up and stuff, but I did that to evoke the execution, and even the checkered blanket was meant to look a bit like that wavy polygraph paper from the original illustration. I've always been haunted by that drawing's concept that Kokichi's cause of death will always be Kokichi, and even in chapter 20 of Amalgamate, it came real close to happening. If Kaito hadn't come to understand Kokichi well enough to recognize what was wrong, Kokichi genuinely could've panicked himself to death D: Which is so sad because everything that's scaring him is meant to help him get better, yet all he sees is danger everywhere. I feel so terrible for him, but I promise in the next chapter, I'm gonna make sure Kokichi starts feeling better. He deserves to finally rest and find some peace and happiness ;_;
