- Today we're going to do a side by side comparison of the new Insta360 Ace (non Pro) vs the Hero 12 and DJI Action 4, testing it's indoor low light, highest resolutions of 6K on the Ace vs 5.3K on the Hero 12, and a HDR test on all 3 cameras. I think Osmo Action 4 has HDR by default, so it’s not possible to turn it on or off, it’s just there. Looking quite good to me. I also think the dynamic range is the same at h265 or h264, there should be no differences at all. The difference would occur when in different frame rate, for example higher dynamic range at 4k24/25 than 4k60 or higher.
Just got my hands on the Ace Pro and found it to be superb. Low light is unbelievable and just the overall quality of picture is brilliant. This is the one to beat I think Andre! You sold me on it….
I had reservations with just 8 bit and not being able to turn off hdr. Now the HDR switch is there, it’s great since we have the option to use it or not. Audio is excellent from the camera as well.
It’s a great buy.
Hey there Ian ! Yes the Ace Pro is a fantastic action camera ! I wanted to see if the Ace (non Pro ) version can keep up with the competition. This Ace has a further focus distance than the Ace Pro and in this comparison the Action 4 looked best. But aside from the focus needing further distance, the image still looks nice out of the Ace. Hope you're doing well
@@WORTHITORNOT whats the minimum distance? Is it just arms length or does it still need a stick just for it to focus better when farther?
Thank you for tests with the non pro version on the Insta360 ace. While the DJI osmo 4 looks like the best quality. The Insta360 ace (non pro) is very affordable option over the other two cams.
I have the Osmo Action 4 and I love it! The audio on this camera is incredible. So far, I haven't needed to use any additional external mics. Its that good. Plus it shoots great quality video.
Yes the Action 4 is a fantastic camera and for those that have it, there is NO reason to upgrade at all. I personally like it's wider field of view too
All the current generation actions cameras look great overall, some perform better in low. The one that I thought looked better changed from clip to clip. Great testing, the new Ace compete's well, but when the Action 4 is on sale for $299, this the camera to get. The 10 bit color in the normal and D-LOG M color profiles is the killer feature. Thanks for sharing.

It's good to see tests like this, we can see the difference and as others have said here, it depends on each person's taste.
In terms of firmware updates, there are usually , from all three brands.
I have an akaso LE, it was the first with a dual screen, and the firmware is always at version 1.0
I've been keeping an eye on the three big brands, but I'm reticent about updates on everything.
Akaso never updated anything....

Great comparison video. The Action 4 looked really good to me. Humm, the focus looks bad on the ace. Can you do a side by side of the ace and ace pro please?

The indoor stabilization on the Ace was definitely better than GoPro, it seemed pretty even with the Action 4, but I think the Ace was slightly better, and could just be my mind over analyzing the footage. I think the indoor image quality were all pretty similar, with the gopro coming in last place, and the Ace and Action 4 being pretty close to each other in quality.
The outdoor daytime shot, the GoPro and Action 4 look more contrasty and saturated, I would say the image quality comes down to viewer preference, I think the GoPro and Action 4 look sharper in daytime, but the Ace has better dynamic range, so again; viewer preference.
The stabilization on the outdoor shots were great on all 3.
The mics sound good on all of them, but I think the Action 4 has the best mic, but only slightly.
All things considered, I prefer the Ace, the flip screen is the kicker for me, but I don't do much "action" stuff, I like an action cam for a good small travel camera.

Between great image quality, audio and stabilization in modern action cameras, they can now be used for A cams in certain situations and definitely for vlogging. Wonder what else will be brought out in 2024? :)
Yeah I still find the DJI4 as it has the wide angle nicer colours and this time is sharp image too. So I have just changed my gopro 12 for a dji action 4 that was especially due to the times I cycle and I get in shade.
With such a small percentage of folks having an 8K monitor or TV to watch the videos on, 4K is really all that's needed. Only the most discerning pixel peepers are going to care about 8K, 6K, 5k, etc. over 4K.
These 3 cameras are so close in quality that I doubt 99% of the people watching content made using them would notice a difference. Our eyes are only so good, even at 20/20 vision. The slight color differences are only noticeable when viewed side by side which won't happen in everyday content creation.
I chose the Action 4 due to the $299 sale. I suspect there will be an Action 5 this summer. I have had several DJI drones and other than the dreaded geoblocking issue, they have been functionally reliable. Good products and brand. I don't think anyone could go wrong getting any of the current crop of action cameras, including the Insta360 X3 for really fun video making. We can now even make 360 videos for RUclips the viewer can manipulate. I never thought we'd be seeing that in something the average person could affordably make.
You have a good radio voice. Have you ever done that kind of work?
Yes technology has come so far, but not needed for most. Yes I worked Radio in the 80's and early 90's then did voice over work. Thanks for watching and commenting
Thank you for the comparison (and your last full review video of it - there seems to be no one ANYWHERE that's actually reviewing the ACE 'standard'). But I'm confused as to why they released this camera (I know it's $70 dollars cheaper than the PRO - and that can make a difference to some people), But is it a camera anyone actually wants and seems to have become a bit of a side note... did the engineers rush in one day a say "STOP THE LAUNCH! We've just managed to code 8k in to the chip!" Manufacturing : We've just injection moulded 10,000 units!" Marketing "I've just worked out the deal with Leica to stick their name on the front!" (Like an action camera needs "Photospec Glass" in it. You just need one tough enough to not crack when you fall on your arse going down a hill on gravel using your face as a brake). Mangement "Stay calm, someone, somewhere, will buy one thinking it's a PRO version"... Anomoly fo' sure. Thanks again for the review 🙏🏽
Thanks for watching ! The Ace is capable of 6K and having the Leica lens on the Ace Pro does help image quality. I personally think that the reason for the Ace, is for those that are just now getting into action cameras for the 1st time and can get 6K video with all the other features. For those that already have a Hero 12 or Action 4 really no reason to upgrade unless you "really" want 8K video and A.I. features. I will say that the Ace Pro's low light is crazy good.

For vlogging, you looked more in focus with the GoPro & Action 4... both the Ace & Ace Pro from previous videos look out of focus.
Exactly, the focus distance on the Insta360 Ace is further than the GoPro or the Action 4. The Ace Pro has a closer focus distance than the Ace.
The hdr looked nice as well as the 6K on my Tv. It’s amazing how action cameras have come so far. Great job showing us these side by side to make an informed decision with our own eyes.
Yes action camera tech has advanced a lot just in the past 2 years, let's see what the rest of 2024 brings

Thank you ! The Action 4 is a fantastic camera and for those that have it, there really is no need to upgrade. I wanted to like the Action 3, but 3 of mine had the out of focus issue, the Action 4's focus is spot on.

All things are about equal across brands now, except image quality. I'm going to have to lean to the GoSlo 12. Yep, I said it! Not a fan of GoSlo either, but fair is fair. For me it's becoming more about durability, price, and feature necessity. I'm a simple organism, I don't need a lot except for value for money.
The difference of the minimum focus distance of the ACE and ACE Pro is absolutely noticeable. If you are aware of this problem the ACE looks better than the DJI because it is not so distorted and the face is brighter in backlit scenarios. GoPro looks good at daylight but the ACE totally destroys it in Lowlight.
Ace wins in my mind.
It can definitely keep up with the GoPro and Action 4, I just wish the close focus distance was better :)
Indeed! I bought Ace last November- it worked out very well in low and the stabilization is good as well.

Do you feel the insta360 is more blue light and the GoPro seemed more yellow light on the outside filming grass?
But then when you filmed the cameras to film you talking the grass in the background did the opposite insta360 was yellow and GoPro was whiter more washed out? Looking to use as a travel content creator and film UGC etc

@@tguarino5430 The Insta360 Ace Pro is definitely the best action camera out there with the Action 4 being a close 2nd.
You've expertly highlighted that this is getting too close to call. Audio on the Ace has more bass but that's not necessarily better or worse, I would say that all three are on par, judging on my new studio monitors 🤣. Close focusing distance is worse on the ACE. Low light is best on the DJI in my opinion (at least noise is handled better, although detail is maybe a bit lower than Gopro), and 4k30 seemed slightly more detailed than either Gopro or Ace.
For vlogging I would get the DJI, DJI Mic integration and close focusing distance make this a no brainer along with overall image quality. The Ace for the toy factor and 6k if you need it, the software is probably great too although I never experienced it. Or get the Gopro, I don't think either will disappoint at this stage. Too many choices 😂😂
Yes the Action 4 is a fantastic camera and it's nice wide FOV is great for vlogging. I wonder what else will be released in 2024 as the bar has been set very high.
@@WORTHITORNOT They can still increase sensor size and bump up to 8k. But I expect the action camera market to turn into a commodity segment like what recently happened to wireless mics. AI tech might give us another couple of generations, but that's something I only see DJI capable of achieving currently. Gopro has too much shareholder pressure although it's currently below book value so maybe not a bad short term investment.
@@StirfriedGerman I'm curious if GoPro will indeed call the next version Hero 13, as 13 is considered an unlucky number. Regarding 8K, I see only a very small segment of people using 8K or even having the computer power to deal with it. My wife wanted me to invest in GoPro, I said I'll pass for now as they are on shaky financial ground IMO
@@WORTHITORNOT Yes I don't know if it's safe, GoPro have been lacking innovation for a while. They might get commoditized. DJI would be a safer bet, but they're privately held.
I think 8k is useful for cropping, it makes no sense to broadcast 8k at this stage. Editing it should be easy with proxies, although I'm hoping that my "new" PC will allow skipping proxies. I just got a second hand i9 10900K / 3700Ti / 32GB for 600 dollars with top motherboard and power supply, I couldn't resist 🤣 Second hand PC prices are crazy low in China, I don't know why.

@@WORTHITORNOT It really can. I think they did a great job with the first version out. It’s not even their flagship model. I did like some of the Action 4 features. I liked their color. Sound was really good on all of them. And it’s amazing they all have really good stabilization. Good comparison, Thx 👍
the ace looks nice looked blurry in low light and when you were in the shade would i get one maybe will wait heard there might be more action cams coming out this year i will wait till there all out then make up my mind on witch on i will get

OA4 and the 12 both look better than the ace, except for low light. Audio on all of the cameras were great.
Gopro robbed me when i bought my 9. Lost footage i can never get back. Overheating , freezing then bought the 10. SAME DAMN PROBLEMS !!!! Gopro robbed me AGAIN ! I wont buy another gopro ever again. DJI Osmo 1,3,4 arw my cameras now. Sold my 5-9 gopros on ebay.
