- A few people have been asking for fights between different rapier combinations recently, so here is another. Rapier & Shield (rotella) vs dual wield rapier (case of).
This is essentially one of the strongest defensive pairings vs one of the most aggressive.
You have made a lot of d&d players happy this day... also a lot of dms are gonna yell.
Great matchup! Love how the rapier is so versatile and agile. Great weapon for unarmored combat.
Also the katana wielding gentlemen in the background seems a lot more skilled than his longsword friend. Got to give credit where it's due.
That was Mike with the katana and I was the victim-ahem- sparring partner with the longsword. I've been in the club about 4 months now and you only learn through lessons, failure and pain. That and I was shattered after 2 previous sidesword spars.
Actually rapiers are as good as other swords in armored combat.
@@traptinseid8577 Mostly because swords aren't meant to break through armor as much as finding an opening
It's always nice to see people giving case of rapiers a fare shake, all too often it seems like people pass it off as stupid or impractical simply because they never took the time to learn it and the higher up you go the more they have to double down on that to seem knowledgeable. Case is difficult, it has a massive learning curve and at the beginning a person learning it is super clunky with it. But it was done and it was done for a reason and it is very nice to see someone who has studied the masters who taught it and learned how to do it right actually use it!
I'm personally not a big fan of case of rapiers simply because the length of one is so great that adding another one would just make me get them tangled (and to be honest, I don't like even daggers with rapiers, I find it much more effective to use an empty hand to deflect and grab the opponent's blade. I love sidesword/dagger though), but I absolutely loathe the folks who try paired swords of any type without any training, use them like they would a single sword or sword and shield, and then go online like "dual-wielding is like so ridiculous lol, you can only use the other one like a crappy shield." Yeah sure, BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT -,- I too can pick up, say, a firearm that has been taken apart and try to put it together without having any idea how it's done, and then tell the whole world that firearms are useless because they can't be put back together effortlessly and quickly. It's nothing but idiocy and intellectual laziness.
Pentti Koivuniemi I couldn't agree more. I speak from a bit of a sore spot in terms of people discrediting the style too. When I first got the opportunity to go to an actual HEMA club, I had an instructor that not only called it impractical and useless while admitting that he had only "played" with case a handful of times but "that was enough", but also directly ridiculed me for liking it stating that because I had originally learned from treaties and private lessons through someone else that my perspective was no good. I'm sure part of it was that I was 17 at the time and it was easier to believe I was just a dumb kid, but it was still uncalled for. I can respect that case isn't your thing, it isn't for everyone. I am fully ambidextrous and often writing with each hand in turn or both at once where it makes sense. Case makes more sense to me than any other style and trying to get better at it was the reason I spent my own money on that damned class in the first place.
Yeah, I hate it when people just dismiss styles they don't personally like or have no affinity to. Adding a second sword won't magically make you into a super-man, but it won't make you worse either, especially if you use the two swords properly together, which really seems to be hard to understand for the folks ridiculing it.
What I really like about the club I'm in is that while we have certain main styles that have teaching and curriculums and all that, we also have a bunch of "open training" hours every week where you can do whatever you want, and that means I get to do all the sidesword and dagger (not really comparable because it's much more accepted in the HEMA world, but still, it's my favorite thing at the moment) I want. I just wish more people picked up sidesword so I could get more people to spar with :D
i know this is 4 years old but, i dont see the reason to have a rapier over another weapon that is also bladed on the sides. Unless im missing something, why wouldnt you go for a weapon with more attacking options?
@@IQuickscopeCA I know this is 2 years old, but rapiers do have sharpened edges, so they can cut, they just aren't as optimized for it because the weight is so much closer to the grip and the profile is very much intended for stabbing. At the same time you can see people doing very good cutting tests and drills with them. Monstrous Monk has multiple videos on his practice with cutting using rapier as an example of very good cutting form utilizing the rapier.
So, rapier&Shield essentially most strongest defensive painting. I thought it was illegal lol
who else was actually watching that bastard and saber in the backgroung though
Mohutch mo And then O katana vs longsword! Three fights in one video.
I watched both fights at the same time.
Is there a specific reason why you don't use Black Fencer synthetic rapiers? Preference or maybe quality?
I see them as a beginner weapon, or a cheap option for those wanting multiple weapons. There is often a good reason to use BF over steel for safety in many sparring scenarios with other weapons, but not with rapier. as steel rapiers hit light on cut and thrust.
Great matchup and great sparring.
Cloak and dagger vs single sidesword.
That is a nasty one. Would make sense going cloak and dagger vs rapier, cut its hard to fend off the cuts of a sidesword with cloak and dagger.
Oh wow. I actually thought rapier would make it too one sided against the dagger user due to it's length. That was what I was originally going to put though lol.... so do that xD
Yeh the problem is the sidesword is less easy to trap being so much shorter, and used more powerful cuts, which are hard to stop with dagger and cloak.
How about a fight with HEMA masks?
Cloak as in a cloth cloak?
I love this channel.
What I see is a lot of is parrying and thrusting after so you try to keep your opponents weapon from blocking your second sword which you try to reach around their shield (this is just from observing first fight with no audio don't feel like watching the whole video)
Why are there so many paper sword projects in the videos recommended section
"Should I go with the swept-hilt or the cup-hilt?... why not both?"
Unrelated questions: what do you think of improvising sideswords with 37' Practical Rapier blades? and is the rawlings baskethilt somewhere near the handling of one or is it more sabre-like?
I will do a review of them in the next few days. But I say the swept handles better, because the balance is a little further forward, about 12cm compared to 10cm on cup. I also much prefer swept to cup. The only reason to go for the cup is the cost, its still very good though.
Hanwei 37 blades work okay as a basic sidesword blade yes. A little light in tip and flexible, but very useable.
No the Rawlings basket hilt is nothing like them, more like sabre yes.
Just saw your review of blackfencer's rapiers, that makes me wonder, is it worth trying to make a sidesword with a hanwei blade when I could buy a blackfencer sidesword?
@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing I know this comment is old but ima just add my two cents
Swept hilts look cooler
Are you sure that's not a side-sword the man with the shield is wielding?
Yes I am sure. The guard on that sword is from the Hanwei sidesword model, but that does not make the sword a sidesword. A particular hilt type does not define whether a sword is a sidesword or rapier, they can and often did have identical hilts. What makes the difference, and therefore defines which one it is, is the blade. In this case it is fitted with a 43" rapier blade, and is therefore a rapier.
That was fun to watch!
What is the shield you use there? Is it homemade?
Not homemade, link below. They're really good.

Academy of Historical Fencing thanks a bunch!
So is dual rapier realpy effective?
Absolutely yes, though the shield is probably one of the best things at countering the combo due to the way it can cover and smother against them. The limitations of paired rapiers are mostly that it takes a lot of experience to use them well and that they were so heavy and a nuisance to carry, which is why they were never particularly common.
How does DW rapier compare with DW Rapier+Dagger? Is the DW Rapier better bc of reach if you have the skill?@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
Look a like Kirito vs Heathcliff
Long sword got picked apart by the katana.
Its all about the skill level.
Academy of Historical Fencing That was also an unusually long katana. I think they're called "O Katanas", since the traditional ones were more akin in weight and lenght to arming swords, but two handed.
First lol (toxic)
