By the way, the real reason why 12 and 60 were used is because they are highly divisible, sometimes called "anti-primes". 12 is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, which is very useful. Hence why eggs come in twelves. 60 is even better because it includes 5, being divisible by 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20, and 30. That's why these numbers are so useful.
That's not how number systems are invented and incorporated. It is a neat bonus but has literally no relevancy to human decision making. Otherwised we'd be using a base 12 system for centuries now.

In Genesis 6:3, apparently God sets a cap on people's lifetimes at 120 years (I think around the time of the flood?) but before that a lot of biblical figures were cited as living much longer.
So then does that mean when genesis says "this person was 100 years when he begat his son" that he was 100 months? I don't think so. If it says he lived to 912 years it probably means 912 years, not months.

@reeferfranklin1006 I'm gonna blow your mind. Here is a doozy. It is believed that a very long time ago there were only 360 days in a year!!! This is due to the fact of writings of the predecessors of the Babylonian -- aack, cannot remember their name -- impacted immensely the science of astronomy; the named most of the stars in all of the astrological star groupings. The reason that they set the number of degrees in a circle to 360 is because there were 360 days in a year. Note that: 360 = 6 × 60 or 360 = 60 × 60 ÷ 10 . And 360 = 12 × 30 And since there are 12 months in a year, every month has 30 days. But this last statement is probably wrong. If we look at the names of the months it would seem to indicate that at some point there were only 10 months in a year. The prefixes of the months from September through December do NOT match their positions in the modern calendar. . . Pos Prefix Means September. 9 sept 7 October. 10 oct. 8 November. 11 nov 9 December. 12 dec 10 Now it is known that two Roman Caesars changed this by inserting July from Julius Caesar as 7th month August from Augustus Caesar as 8th!! So if you there 10 months in a 360 day year that means there are 36 days in a month, and 36 = 6 × 6!. Somewhere there was a massive interstellar event where a super massive asteroid knocked the earth into a different orbit to change the year from 360 days to 365 days. Even though this happened thousands of years before the Romans, they still bore an indicator of this stellar event in the warning " Beware the Ides of March " which was an event that occurred possibly twice a year at March and to a lesser degree six months later in October. At these times massive asteroids would fall and strike the earth around the Mediterranean. I have digressed into weird, unpopular astronomy. I leave it to you to research it further. I will return to the math. Now it interesting that the Babylon biana where familiar with a base-60 number system. But it would have come in handy when dealing with the subdivisions of a degree. There are 60 minutes in a degree, and 60 seconds in a minute. Notice how that ties in with our clocks. 60 minutes is one hour or one degree. Can you imagine trying to work with a base-60 number system?!? Not 10 digits but 60!!! 😮 Whew
The only thing that doesn't fit is months. Sure its 12, but its deceptive since july and august were added later on and there were originally 10 months, hence why some are named after their number, or at least their old number (Sept-ember, Oct-tober, Novem-ber, Dec-ember. 7, 8, 9, and 10 respectively)

@@YOUR_NARRATOR975as long as my typing doesn’t go to waste. First, you’ve got to know that some parts of the Bible are meant to be taken literally and some are meant to not be taken as literally. The Bible allows for some of your own interpretation as long as it doesn’t contradict scripture or other articles of faith along with a bit more. That being said, most believe that the high ages are meant to be taken literally, with some still speculating otherwise. All Christians believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead. That’s impossible in modern day but that’s the entire bases of our religion, the faith in that God did truly send his one and only son to die for our sins but raise three days later. It was a miracle, a supernatural anomaly. After understanding that, you can begin to understand how it’s possible to live to be 912. Not everyone back in the day lived to be that old. It was a gift from God, a miracle to be given long life. Those that did live long were important in that they spent those hundreds of years living through God. The reason humans don’t live that long anymore is due to our own sin and wickedness. Now humans only live to 120. The flood was also due to our sin and wickedness. Interesting! That would make some numbers like Sarah giving birth to Isaac at 100 a little strange (100/12= 8.3). So there’s a blend of numbering systems!
@magnify it specifically says years, though. You would think they are not telling peoples age in months in one part and using years properly in another part. But it could mean 9 sets of 12 years plus another 12 years. Although that would mean you denote 13 using 101.

for everyone saying he actually lived 76 years, no. these would be the same years we use today. why is that? all first five books of the bible were written by the same man, prophet moses. later on in genesis, god gives abraham the news that his wife will give birth to isaac, when he himself is 100 years old. abraham replies that such a thing is impossible, since he is so old. so in the book of genesis, which was written by one man only, a 100 year old person is considered old. 100 divided by 12 is around 8. so what am i saying? for moses, who wrote the part of genesis about adam and eves descendants, the word "year" meant one full rotation around the sun. the same thing it means today. it did not have the same meaning as "month"

This theory doesn’t make sense if you just read other passages. As one person pointed out, this would mean people had babies at 5 and other too young ages. It would also mean people like Moses who lived to be 120 was 10 when he died. Moses was about 40 when he fled Egypt before returning to gather the Israelites, so really he would’ve been about 3.5 years old. Moses was 80 when he seen pharaoh so that would mean the exodus pretty much started when Moses was about 6.5 years old. And the exodus being 40 years was really only about 3.5 years in total. To recap, Moses was born, then at 3.5 he killed an Egyptian grown man and fled, then he came back when he was 6.5 and led all the Israelites on the Exodus, the exodus was 3.5 years total and he died at 10 years old of old age. You pretty much have to adjust for everyone’s ages and events, which makes no sense at all. If you try to say after the flood the ages changed and reference Gen 6:3, then you are saying your entire theory is wrong anyways. Most Christians would say ages changed after the flood, and the normal highest age of human would go to 120 after the flood (unless you are walking with GOD like Abraham). So most Christians have an answer to this, which is it was literal. If you look into oxygen levels, tree heights, prior to the flood you will get an explanation of why people could live to be so long back then. Basically it was a super environs for us. But if you don’t believe the ages were literal, other ages and events make no sense whatsoever if you are being consistent. The only way this theory makes sense is if you arbitrarily apply when you feel like it and then arbitrarily don’t apply when it doesn’t make sense which is 99% of the time.

It's not only that it's wonderful for counting on your hands, it's also that 12 is way more divisible compared to 10. 10 is 2×5. That's all you get. 12 is 2×2×3. Here's some things that does for you 1. You know how in base ten, anything that ends with 5 or 0 is divisible by 5, and anything that ends in an even number is divisible by 2? Well, in base 12, anything that ends in an even number is divisible by 2, anything that ends in 4, 8, or 0 is divisible by 4, anything that ends in 3, 6, 9, or 0 is divisible by 3, and anything that ends in 6 or 0 is divisible by 6. There's just so many more things that are easy to keep track of that way. 2. In base 10, you get two nice, simple decimals of small fractions: .2 for a fifth and .5 for a half. In base 12, you get to use .6 for a half, .4 for a third, .3 for a fourth, and .2 for a sixth. An eighth turns from .125 to just .16, a ninth from .1111... to just .14, etc. Basically, more simple, non-repeating decimals. The bottom line is, whatever your base is, the factors of that number are going to be easy to work with within that bass. Having chosen base ten, we only got two factors, and one of them (5) is sort of big and not very useful. How often do you really want to divide something into five equal parts, compared to two or three or four? Base 12 gives you three factors instead of two, and they're smaller; it's just objectively better and more convenient who's anyone who hasn't already become thoroughly used to the other system.
@@marialegare3954 I think you're on to something. Maybe people were better off on base 12 math. A lot of people have trouble with math; maybe it's because we use base 10. Actually, systems of measurement before metric used to have base 12, and in the US there are still 12 inches in a foot.

Fun fact, a form of Islamic prayer known as "tasbih" involves repeating prayer phrases a specific number of times, and traditionally, one would keep count using the bones of the finger. Nowadays, some use prayer beeds known as "misbaha" to keep count more easily.
Thinking of people from all the way back then not as just distant figures but “the original audience” is both fascinating and lowkey heartwarming to me
This is actually something translators need to consider all the time. Anime, for example, has tons of stuff that are just not able to be directly translated because it's so specific to Japanese culture and therefore intended only to truly be understood by Japanese people.
Yeah. For example, Japanese say "TENS of ~", where as Americans say "DOZENS of ~". Also in Japan "EIGHT" is used symbolically to mean "many, a lot, a big number". In the Middle East, 40 was a symbolic number that meant "many". For example, raining for 40 days & 40 nights, wondering in the desert for 40 days, Alibaba & the 40 Thieves. We need to keep the SYMBOLIC use of numbers in mind for old stories.
It's actually the French revolution that really pushed base 10 for everything. They even tried to change it to 10 day weeks and 10 hour days, etc. But that didn't catch on. British especially resisted decimals for money until the 1970s.
And here is another mystery. The great pyramid of Giza, Khufu, is scaled precisely to the circumference of the earth. Not only that, but Khufu height was determined by the use of pi.
Honestly, a video by Lindybeige on old British money convinced me that our obsession with the number 10 is poop. 12 is a much better number to base everything on because it's divisible by so many numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12) you can do so much more with 12 than 10.
I can see it's usefulness. What I'm confused about is how it would still be "11 and 12". Like base 10, meaning after 10 comes 10 and 1, or 11, 10 And 2, or 12. So for a base 12 system, wouldn't there need to be two new numbers, likely before ten to make more sense. So it would look something like 6,7,8,9,§,¥,10,11,12,......, 18,19,1§,1¥,20,21.....ect.
If divisibilty was the most important factor Im sure 12 would have been the base. However convenience is king and 10^6 is a lot easier to calculate than 12^6. Base 12 breaks for the human mind once you go to very large or small numbers.
@@jojothehamster the primary reason it got replaced by base 10 in measurements. Time is a different case since it's a phenomena that conveniently aligns with a base 12 system.
Technically you could count up to 144 counting the 12 spaces on one hand as the 1s places and the 12 spaces in the other as the 10s places (which 10 in duodecimal is equal to 12 in decimal) if you would count the two extra spots on your thumbs, you can count up to 196. And then if you count you palms, you can count to 225 on your two hand. Also the reason we have a word for 11 and two words for 12 is because English used to be a duodecimal language. Just a very very long time ago (I’m talking a potentially a century before Shakespeare, alive in the 1500s) because languages that are related to English like German and Norwegian also have names for 11 and 12. English: Eleven, twelve German: elf, zwölf Norwegian: elleve, tolv

Decimals would have to line up with months and days in order for it to make sense. But I do agree with you in the fact that as explained doesn’t add up with everything else.
What I understand is that all of those ages were counted in months old, adam is 930 months old not years. So adam had 77 years and 6 months o life. Same for all others
@@MonkeyP98Never heard that interpretation before, but it doesn't make sense in the text. Unless we're meant to understand that 5 and 10 year olds were fathering children, since that's how it breaks down in the genealogies using this method.
Wow! That's neat. I just learned how to count to twelve with one hand. Not to mention how to use a multiplier with the other 😂😂😂😂. And just in case, this is no joke for me, I really appreciate this cool little knowledge. 😎 😅😅
Best explanation I’ve found for it is that the ages aren’t meant to be accurate in any way. More that they were combinations of significant numbers (like 7, 12, etc.) meaning to represent some form of completeness. A real life example is that of Sargon saying he built the circumference of his city wall to be equal to “the number of my name”
Also, unlike in the modern times where just knowing your age can already point issues on your health. Meanwhile, in the ancient days (even until during early 20th century, from my grandparents' experience at least) how they decide that a person is an adult if they are considered "ready", and that is very much subjective to whoever says it. Wouldn't it be easier to assume that the pre-Flood world supported longer lives? Clearly you don't believe it, but let's not mutilate the text to support such doubt. We shouldn't build wild speculation out of the fact that someone's age is divisible by 12. Every 12th number is divisible by 12, so it's bound to happen that some ages are divisible by 12. The text is just telling us something straightforward here.

Note that:
360 = 6 × 60
or
360 = 60 × 60 ÷ 10
. And
360 = 12 × 30
And since there are 12 months in a year, every month has 30 days.
But this last statement is probably wrong. If we look at the names of the months it would seem to indicate that at some point there were only 10 months in a year. The prefixes of the months from September through December do NOT match their positions in the modern calendar.
.
. Pos Prefix Means
September. 9 sept 7
October. 10 oct. 8
November. 11 nov 9
December. 12 dec 10
Now it is known that two Roman Caesars changed this by inserting July from Julius Caesar as 7th month
August from Augustus Caesar as 8th!!
So if you there 10 months in a 360 day year that means there are 36 days in a month, and 36 = 6 × 6!.
Somewhere there was a massive interstellar event where a super massive asteroid knocked the earth into a different orbit to change the year from 360 days to 365 days. Even though this happened thousands of years before the Romans, they still bore an indicator of this stellar event in the warning
" Beware the Ides of March " which was an event that occurred possibly twice a year at March and to a lesser degree six months later in October.

The ages are literal

Ohh, so THAT'S how base 12 was supposedly easy to learn and use compared to base 10! Huh, very clever.
Numbers in base 12 also tend to be easy to divide into halves, thirds, and quarters.
It's not only that it's wonderful for counting on your hands, it's also that 12 is way more divisible compared to 10. 10 is 2×5. That's all you get. 12 is 2×2×3. Here's some things that does for you

So it would look something like 6,7,8,9,§,¥,10,11,12,......,

English: Eleven, twelve
German: elf, zwölf
Norwegian: elleve, tolv
A 12-base system is also easier to work with in terms of multiples. It would be divisible by 2 3 4 and 6, compared to the current 2 and 5.
Would be a much more intuitive system for math
It isn't as good as base 6
Yo why the fuck am I just learning now, how to count on my fingers like that. I swear they purposefully kept that out of our school systems in order to make us generally less capable students mathematically. That would've been mad helpful to know as a kid

Very interesting idea, but it’s application to Seth is probably mistaken. There are many numbers listed in the chapter, (some of which have symbolic significance,) but none of any others are multiples of 12.

However, in hebrew, in genesis 6:8, the literal translation is " and the days of of Seth were 12 years and 900 years and then he dies", which means they needed to separate 912 into 900 and into 12, implying a decimal counting system
Just curious, is that the literal translation? Or the old English translation?

That's hexadecimal which is 16
It's not related at all. They chose 6 as the max for gameplay balance reasons.
6X² + 4X = 912 for x=12, so it's a bit like 640 in base twelve. The other way to see it is like saying 1001, meaning a large number plus an extra bit to emphasize the magnitude, since it is a large and medium (60+12) times a medium (12) plus a small (4) times a medium.

This doesn't apply to the rest of the people in the early chapters of Genesis
Adam - 930
Enosh - 905
Kanan - 910
Mahallalel - 895
Jared - 962
Chanoch - 365
Lemech - 777
Noach - 950
None of these are divisible by 12. Adam is divisible by 6.
Imaginary people live a long time.
Decimals would have to line up with months and days in order for it to make sense. But I do agree with you in the fact that as explained doesn’t add up with everything else.
What I understand is that all of those ages were counted in months old, adam is 930 months old not years.
So adam had 77 years and 6 months o life.
Same for all others
add up all the full ages of the patriarchs from adam to moses and you'll get 12,600. a multiplication of 10 of that number is found in revelation
@@MonkeyP98Never heard that interpretation before, but it doesn't make sense in the text. Unless we're meant to understand that 5 and 10 year olds were fathering children, since that's how it breaks down in the genealogies using this method.
Using this system, then how do explain Moses age of 120 when he died. Does this means he was 10 when died.
Tldr: It didn't matter back then.
@@Eis_ it ment read to be a adult or have kids, then yes it does. Ever hear of bar Mitzvha, or today you are a man? it means you are of age, and now a man (bat) is used for a girl who has just became a woman.

@@BibleClinger why would I just assume this was the case? There’s no evidence to support it, nor is it in line with what I’ve read in regards to Jewish culture. You can believe it if you want, it’s not a matter of salvation
