  • Tupolev Tu-334 is a regional passenger aircraft developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1990s.
The design was based on a Tu-204 fuselage and a scaled-down version of that aircraft's wing. But, after the years of development the project was abandoned favor of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 airliner.

The A318 was particularly an example of this failure. Carrying with it much of the structure of its larger siblings, it’s cost per available seat mile was simply too high. Only sold 80, and now many of those are scrapped. The 717 was not much more commercially successful, although it has survived in much stronger numbers.

Once again, the 737-600 also falls in this tragic story, being even rarer with only 69 aircraft built. I'm grateful I can see them regularly as I work with WestJet (which has the largest fleet, with 13 aircraft). Plus they're keeping them for the foreseable future! ^U^

The great thing that the Tupolev could do that the others couldn't was get in and out of less than optimal airports. I don't know how true it is but a Bulgarian friend of mine claims they've taken off from dirt strips.

The A318 was not a failure. It never sold in large numbers, but i was never meant to. It catered to a small niche and it allowed companies who needed to fill that niche to remain all-Airbus. Its development cost next to nothing, so the A318 did not have much of an impact, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Not more, not less.

Please make a film about Il-62. In my oppinion one of the most beutiful planes in the history of aviation. Its smouth fuselage and 4 engines in the back make it look so unique and I'd even say "sporty" compareing to chubby planes with engines placed under the wings. Il-62, despite being involved in many huge tragic accidents (two in Poland with LOT airlines) is one of my personal favourites! Best reguards to You!

I enjoy your videos very much, but I have a naive question about this one: You listed several possible reasons for the TU-334's inability to compete with an assortment of rival aircraft such as the A220 and A318, but among your reasons, I notice that you didn't mention the three-man flight crew required for the TU-334, which I would have thought to be a major impediment to international sales, vs. the two-pilot airframes that ultimately won out. How much effect did the old fashioned three-crew configuration have, on the international appeal of the TU-334?

The aircraft market is not easy to break into. A plane manufacturer could build the best plane in the world and airlines still would be upprehensive about buying it, until a manufacturer can prove it's self reliable, because there is no point in heaving the world's greatest plane when the manufacturer is heaving trouble supplying parts for it. Airbus went through that also, for the first 10 years of the Airbus company it's orders were low it, because airlines preferred Boeing aircraft because they knew Boeing has been around for a while and was a reliable aircraft manufacturer, but after 10 years Airbus proved it's self and showed that it can supply parts and be reliable just like Boeing and that's when their orders started growing. The Sukhoi Super Jet is one example of manufacturer building a nice efficient aircraft but they were not able to supply Super Jet parts that airlines desperately needed, airlines started taking parts from one Super jet and putting it on another just so some of their aircraft could fly and all because Sukhoi could not supply parts fast enough and until Sukhoi can fix this problem airlines will not be ordering the Super Jet. It takes at least 5 to 10 years of a manufacturer proving it's self before their order books grow. It actually sucks that Sukhoi is so slow at providing parts, because the SSJ is a really nice aircraft and it had a chance to be extremely popular but Sukhoi executives screwed up by not being ready when airlines needed parts for their Super Jets, but they can still recover if they fix the parts supply issue, the only thing is it's gone take years for them to repair their reputation among airlines. I just hope the new Irkut MC-21 will do much better then Sukhoi Super Jet. Unfortunately it will also take time for Irkut to build it's reputation as a reliable aircraft manufacturer, so for the first 5 to 10 years the orders will be low until the manufacturer proves it's self.
