This is a much older video that we re-published from our other channel. The audio quality is NOT up to our standards, but we thought the content was still worth sharing! Do YOU use a food mill?
Do you still use it frequently? My one problem with some kitchen stuff is that I'll like it but never come back to it again (or at least as much as I was wanting to).
Not yet, but watching your review before buying mine
We use it enough to make it worth keeping. Makes THE BEST mashed potatoes for one.
Nope. I didn’t even know this existed. I was watching a video of a French chef and I saw him using it. Now I need one 😊
Thanks so much. After almost breaking my wrist trying to put potatoes for a make ahead casserole through a ricer (now in the garbage), I bought this food mill. I was trying to figure out how to use it and my husband suggested RUclips. And there you two were! Your video was so helpful.
Happy to help!
I bought a stainless food mill years ago to process tomatoes. Now am getting arthritis in my wrists and using my masher hurts. So I now use the food mill for potatoes. I use the disc with largest holes. I cut up potatoes and never thought you could put them in whole! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I use the exact one. Just recently bought this and have only used it for tomato sauce. Never thought I needed one, but boy I was wrong...love it! Making mashed potatoes today.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this product!
It was a pleasure to watch the two of you have a jolly discussion and thanks for the details!
I have to tell you, not only did I look into potato ricers and felt the armature was too weak on most models, but my Italian mom used a food mill for her tomato sauce all week long while I grew up. You helped me to dispel my misunderstanding of why mom loved her food mill and furthermore expressed how useful this item is for separating skin from vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes. At least I won't get bent when a potato ricer deforms from grip pressure!
oh my goodness - thank you SO much!! I bought this a while ago, and was a little scared to tackle it - now I want to may gnocchi, and searched for a vid. I am so glad I found yours!! thank you guys so much!!! wooo hooo!!!!
I think I have a gnocchi vid too... but sounds like you already know how to make it!
I'm so glad to stumble across this channel.
Happy to have you!
Brian: You can't break the machine by using it. Me: It aint "firefighter proof"! Hold my homebrew! LOL Showed the wife this video, so now she's getting one for Christmas (and not letting me touch it!).
Use the insert with the larger holes for making spaetzle
This sounds great! How thick is your Spätzle batter?
I have a kenwood chef cake mixer (the UK version of Kitchenaid). One of the attachments is a ‘colander and sieve’. It pretty much does the same thing as this, rubs food over a roughened surface and mouli’s it. I love mine. I use it for so much stuff.
Yup, I think I have one for my Kitchenaid actually... I just like the hand crank one for some reason!
Hi, just got this oxo food mill, have you found any new uses? Happy holidays, tyvm
The disk with the largest hole size would be good for making condiments and spreads.
I actually have one of these and I hate it! It is however the all stainless version with the folded wire handle, and it lacks the feet. Trying to hold on to the sucker while using it, is like using a round handled mixing spoon with oily hands. I have yet to find a way to use it without making a mess. I much prefer the manual grinder type that works like the old hand crank table mounted sausage grinders. You don't have to try and hold it while you use it, so you don't need 4 hands for the task.
That said: watching you, got me to thinking about mounting the thing in a countertop with legs, so it can sit above a bowel, and I don't have to hold it while using it. Thanks!
can you juice green leafy veggies and other veggies/fruits with it?
It's not a juicer at all, so I would say probably not.
I just bought a new rsvp food mill for $6. I hope it works well too. Im excited to use it for potatoes.
Good luck!
Thank you for the video! I bought this very food mill after Thanksgiving, but have yet to use it.
I personally hate potato skins so I've always spent all the time peeling the potatoes before boiling them and then ricing them to make mashed potatoes. Does the food mill "filter" out all of the potato skins or does some of the skin still make its way into the mashed potatoes?
It does a good job of removing them and keeping them out :). If you overgrind though, some bits will get in.
Thank you for the reply!!
My ricer takes up less room in my drawer. Mine twists in a spiral motion. Plus I need a workout. Love the videos though,
LOL. It's all good.
Ok you convinced me I will invest in one, but not for the Mashed potatoes I love Skins and lumps in those. I also was a huge Alton Brown fan until I went plant based. I just cant watch his stuff anymore. Also I am going to try that Beyond burger clone soon that is why I started following your channel.
Hmm… maybe I should become the plant based Alton Brown… jk. I also like smashed potatoes sometimes :)
@@PlantBasedBistro this all of this. I mean we have the Canadian Alton Brown. Why not a Plant Based AB
Would you consider making a video pressing sprouted wheat berries through it ?
Why would you press wheat berries through a food mill?
@@PlantBasedBistro I want to make raw sprouted wheat bread... but I need to 'crush' the wheat berries first into a 'dough' from which I form a thin wafer from the resultant 'dough'..
I think this food mill could do the crushing into a dough step... if it can, then I will buy this food mill....
the sprouted wheat berries are soft...
if you do make a video please post the link as a reply to this comment, thank you
I'm not sure a food mill is meant for what you're looking for.
Got mine at the salvation army $6.99 brand new in box . Guess someone didn't like their gift 😀 lucky me
Nice!
I ended up getting a food mill for the same reason when my ricer broke after less than 20 uses.
I threw our ricer across the room.
@@PlantBasedBistro Was that ricer also an oxo model? It just occurred to me that oxo might’ve intentionally designed a flawed product so I’d also buy their food mill. Jk
Nope, was something I got at a local chef's warehouse store.
I like to mash mine with skin as it retains nutrition as well as fiber;
Makes fabulous applesauce. Can cook the apples skin, core & all, either stovetop or microwave. Nice & pink if red skinned apples are used.
Good idea!
I don’t uses microwave How to do step one in the oven ?
Just bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes.
We have a new law here in Sweden. It says that if Derica or Brian talks about food they have to make a video about it. You have to make a video of potato pancakes. It is in the law...
LOL. I suppose we should be honored that we are in the law books?
@@PlantBasedBistro I really love that you nerd out on stuff. You get a thingy, then figure it out. And then present your take on it. I really enjoy watching your take on gadgets
Thanks Bo. Truly appreciate all your support on all our channels!
Sorry but I have to disagree on Mr. Browns phobia/disdain for so called uni-taskers. I just think he goes way too far with the notion. Sure, it's nice when a piece of equipment can do a couple things. Would I buy a dedicated yogurt maker? No, but I wouldn't use a heating pad either when I could dial in any temperature I want with my immersion circulator. There's a multi-tasker... But, the right tool for the right job... Jack of all trades and master of none. These sayings are around for a reason. That all being said, love the passion you put into the video. I have a food mill in my Amazon cart as I type. Oh and the disk you don't know what to do with, wonder if it would work for spaetzle? Cheers!
