It's not. Willem plays an eccentric, occult obsessed doctor. As an actor, it's important that one understand their character, lest the audience find you unbelievable in the role. Willem clearly wanted to make himself seem more believable, so whenever he said a prayer, made some sort of banishment, etc. he wouldn't just be memorizing lines, there was an understanding as to what the intention of those words was.

The fact he played Max Schreck in Shadow and is so prominent in fighting the Nosferatu of 24 makes it already a super Magickal connection.
