Throughout the 30 years I have been playing music, I have learned the craft of (coincidentally) 30 instruments🎶
14 - Laouto (Cretan). The Cretan Laouto is the backbone of the Cretan Ensemble. It’s a 4 course lute that is slightly larger in size than it’s mainland counterpart. Traditionally, laouto players would use a bird feather as a pick, which was later replaced by a long plastic pick which creates a characteristic slap sound against the sound board. The combination of pick and either playing melody or strumming chords allows for a combination of melody and percussion that is characteristic to the island of Crete. The laouto was originally tuned the same as the rest of Greece (A-D-G-C) however over time the tuning was adjusted to play easier with the violin/lyra (E-A-D-G). This instrument was made by master luthier @giannis_paximadakis
