      Taurus 1 was introduced in 1975. I have 4 in mint condition. 1975, 1978, 1979, and 1981. They have yellow tags inside that have the date on them. Sounds great. Makes financial sense.

    Love your review and your calm, concise approach. Simplicity is the beauty of this instrument. As a singer and keyboard player in a live band there is not a lot of time to program different sounds, so this sort of machine is a godsend. In another life I played about 4 gigs a week throughout England, at the time there was no such thing as a preset synth, when I finally got a Korg 700s it solved a lot of problems for very little money, though I remember people saying it was a toy and not sophisticated enough.

    It certainly sounds good, if I didn’t have the Moog Minitaur I’d be tempted but the Minitaur with the software editor and preset functionality is brilliant. I’d be tempted if they made it with the floor pedals.

    I hope people realize that the original Taurus was supposed to be a simple way to get bass synth by stomping on these gigantic heavy steel/plastic pedals that were part of the setup. I owned both versions through the nineties and used it when playing a poly synth or rhodes over the top. That’s why it’s a limited (but wicked) bass machine. It’s a tribute to that Moog product in an affordable offering.

    You make a good point regarding "instant moog bass". just like the taurus: simple enough for a guitar player to understand. Regarding effect pedals, I assume that a zoom ms70(or 50) is mandatory for any synth owner. I decided that strymon was too expensive so I got 2 ehx pedals for the same money. A grand canyon delay and an oceans12 dual reverb. Infinite sound combinations. I also use my lexicon rack effects. You should mention those. I also have a fender Greta baby tube amp that I modded so I could switch the speaker out for a silent dummy resistor. This becomes a 12ax7 tube overdrive pedal. Real tubes and other analog distortion/drive effects are what I like. Digital is ok for most time and pitch based effects but when I use fuzz/dist its boss HM2 dist or BAT Pharoah Supreme fuzz, or Greta...HOWDAREYOU! .

    This kind of reminds me of the early 90s, when companies started to cash in on the gathering desire for 303s - the Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9, the FAT Freebass 383, even the Doepfer 404 was part of the fad for simple 1-osc monosynths. Even though back then you wouldn't pay over £300 for a genuine TB, and these synths were no cheaper and not very much like the real thing... But, I guess if this thing ticks someone's boxes, it'll find a niche. Simplicity can be a really useful thing.

    • @winesynths
      @winesynths  10 месяцев назад +1

      You are right! We were talking about this while editing! The 303 clones were all labeled ass bass synths but never really delivered real fat & deep bass! The Bassstation 1 was even kind of a „bass free“ bass synth! The Doepfer was acceptable. And also a new TD-3 is not what you would like to have for a bass like the one on a Moog. And here I have to say, that the Toro is great! 👍

    • @Rr0gu3_5uture
      @Rr0gu3_5uture 10 месяцев назад +2

      In all fairness, nobody's buying a 303 to use as a Bass synthesizer. The only reason those clone synths had bass in their title was simply a nod to the 'Bass Line' on the original TB-303. It did seem pretty disingenuous at the time thought. They should've labelled them somewhere along the lines of an acid ostinato synthesizer.

    • @KenRobertsProductions
      @KenRobertsProductions 10 месяцев назад +1

      The reviewer is not really using it as intended. The Moog Taurus pedals were designed to play deep bass lines by a guitar player with his feet. Think of the slow deep bass in The Police song “Don’t Stand So Close To Me”.

    I have scratched my head over this one since they day it was announced. The far more interesting Cat or K-2 can be had for $50 less while for $50 more you get a Pro 1 or Model D which definitely covers this whole territory. (The filter is NOT unique to it) None of that stops it from making some great sounds and I guess there is something to be said for being absolutely dead simple to use?

    • @wonderwheel80s
      @wonderwheel80s 10 месяцев назад

      For what I know about the Moog Taurus, it wasn't the filter to be unique, but the waveforms, which were said to be saturated and gave it its charateristic sound (which was different than the MiniMoog sawtooth).

    • @klstay
      @klstay 10 месяцев назад

      @@wonderwheel80s I would be surprised if pushing the Model D filter with input on (but not patched) to where it is just starting to overload did not produce the same effect as the inherently clipped saws of the Toro. Of course, I have been surprised plenty of times before, so maybe... It is dead simple to use - especially if you just push a preset. Model D is pretty darn straightforward too though so I still wonder a bit at why one would get this instead or in addition to it.

With the Taurus, the bass always remains stable, even if the VCOs are detuned to each other. Unfortunately, that was also the case with the Taurus 3.

    Mmmmm...not feeling it. I recall the original Taurus (and the II, but to a lesser extent) had a "grittier" sound, especially on hard attacks. Probably was a bit of overshoot with the attack's initial peak driving the VCA a bit too hard, sort of like the situation with the Roland Jupiter-4 and how the overdrive on that (deliberately implemented) was integral to its sound. Losing that tiny "crunch" really dampens the definition of those notes...the percussive punch on attack doesn't seem to be present here.
    Frankly, when I saw that this was next in Uli's pipeline, I was pretty underwhelmed. One could easily argue that B. did this one solely for the money that would flow from the Moog "cachet", but the sonic shortcomings seemed fairly obvious...even with YT's audio compression. What I (and probably a ton of recent B.2600 purchasers) was waiting for was the matching 1601 clone, which Behringer announced around the same general time that the 2600 clone hit the shelves. Considering that Uli's team NAILED the 2600 reissue and for a fraction of Korg's you-ain't-getting-one version (not EVEN close with the 2600M, frankly; having the full keyboard module in B's version should be a total game changer). I've said before that the B.2600 sounds very much like a brand-new rev.4 from the end of the 1970s, and I still stand by that assessment. So why not complete the system, hmm?
    This also makes me more than a little concerned about Uli's Sound Easel clone. With that, there's going to be trouble if they can't get all that vactrol circuitry of Don's functioning as expected. And shanking the shot on the Toro's envelope/VCA situation doesn't bode well if Behringer opts to ignore details on that reissue...whenever Uli opts to finally fish or cut bait.
