      Funny they didn't mention that in the Disney version. In the original version the story opens with a young queen sewing at her windowsill on a winter's day when she pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell in the snow. She wished for a daughter with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as a ravens wing.

      sleeping beauty is interesting too the first part is correct about maleficent putting her under the curse although I forgot her age but the prince that comes to rescue her is actually a king and married then he rapes snow white because he couldn't wake her up when snow white finally wakes up after the 100 years she gives birth to the baby and goes to the neighboring kingdom where the king takes her in the queen finds out that its sleeping beauty and the kings child and devises a plan to kill the child cook it and feed it to the king she fails and is beheaded by the king I think then the king and sleeping beauty live happily ever after personally I think either sleeping beauty and the little mermaid is a tie between the most messed up story he should really do a video about it.

    • @hannah-nn7wo
      @hannah-nn7wo 7 лет назад +5

      I’m not sure if this is true but I think In sleeping beauty she gives birth to the baby while still asleep/dead, and the baby sucks the poison from her thumb and she lives again.

  • @samr6514
    @samr6514 6 лет назад +39

    Also, I’m pretty sure that when the queen wants to be the ‘fairest’, she didn’t just mean general beauty, she meant literal fairness- pale/whiteness. That’s why Snow eventually surpasses her; because where’s the queen actually goes out and lives, Snow is literally kept in a room her whole life with very little light, thus eventually she would have to be the ‘fairest’ at some point, regardless of her ‘beauty’.

    • @captainzork6109
      @captainzork6109 Год назад +3

      There's a different perspective which focuses not on her literal beauty, but her innocence. This makes sense, as for the viewer Snowwhite and the queen are equal in beauty - yet people (both audience and in-story characters, as well as the usually shy forest creatures) like Snowwhite more. In other words, the queen may have thought Snowwhite was more liked because of her beauty, but the story makes clear that outer beauty doesn't matter
      Snowwhite is purer than the queen, not only in terms of her skin or beauty, but also in terms of the goodness of character that resulted from her innocence.
      She is so pure of heart, it borders on naivete. Even though she was forewarned by the dwarves, as well as the animals, she let the queen disguised as the old lady into her home.
      Perhaps it is because she was locked away she grew up to be so pure?

She started me on the saying "Disney sanitized for your protection." I can enjoy Disney movies...however will always remember what Gramma taught me: Fairy Tales are Horror Stories designed to scare/teach morals to children while Disney movies are designed to joyfully teach children to get their parents to buy them things.

    About the age thing, one of my theories is that Snow lived with the dwarves for a number of years, and grew up into adolescence while living with them. While marrying at that age is unacceptable to modern society, that was actually common practice in the Medieval Era.
    Another theory is that, while it says that she was seven when she was so beautiful, that she actually grew up to be more beautiful than her step-mom in later years. There again, we encounter a teenager getting married when the prince comes, but, also again, that was common practice back then.
    Unfortunately. This practice occurred because most people had died by the time they turned 30 in those days, if they were lucky. Or, unlucky, given that it's the Medieval period, and that things were utterly terrible during that time.

    A channel I am a fan of partly for telling tales from mythology and partly for being an Australian (the accent is comforting to my Aussie ear), had a tale called "The Juniper Tree" which sounds like an alternate version of some parts of Snow White. There's a child who is pale as snow and red as blood, and hateful stepmother, apples, and a murderous plot to kill the child. However from that point on it differs, since the child does get killed and turned into stew, but a magic bird in the juniper tree collects items in trade for singing and then gives them to the family members, culminating with a miller's stone for the stepmother, which kills her, and the bird turning into the child who had been murdered.
    I have said this before, but I think old fairy tales spread all over Europe with different versions taking hold in different areas, various parts popping up here and there, and we get a tale that sounds like the start of Snow White, or other tales with parts of Greco-Roman myth, or sharing plot points with Cinderella.

    Dear john, you know that stories "travel" in particular ways sometimes... Analysing eastern-medieval (byzantine) texts taught me that some numbers appear in a symbolic and non-realistic way. One of these numbers is number 7 which, if im not mistaken, has a broader use beyond the Byzantine empire (that i know a few things off). Sooo, maybe that could be one explanation, that 7 is not the age of the girl in the tale but it may have a symbolic meaning that the people who heard the stories knew. And if the story is found written probably the writer wanted to maintain some basic traditional forms. what do you think?

    I've seen other shows that describe Snow White's origins, some of the things included in those were that the queen also wanted a vial of snow whites blood to add to her wine and drink, and she wanted the vial to be corked with Snow Whites pinky, so the huntsman really does cut her pinky off, but then he lets her go. another thing included was that Snow White slept for 5 years, aging the entire time (which the dwarves apparently thought was normal), meaning when the prince saw her she was 12, and in those days it wasn't uncommon for girls that young to get married.

    Actually, in the original folk story, the evil step-mother was her real mother. This was changed since it was supposed to be for children and having your birth mother try to kill you is really harsh. Actually most stories that have step mothers, are actually trying to just hide the fact that it was there birth mother. It’s pretty messed up.

    Some of the older versions explain the aging, "Being like dad but alive and aging" Sometimes she's with the Dwarves, dragons, or thieves for seven or more years.
    Also the Brother's Grimm was the first version with the villain being her step mother. Most versions had her as her actual mother. Some a jealous aunt or sister, who was her guardian after her parent's death.

As for the lacing the two main interpretations are corset lacing which would kill many wealthy young women in that time or the proper lacing of a neck-lace that would be used to convey one’s innocence. These are just the common assumptions made by schools and literature majors. As for the dancing till she died, no teacher or student I’ve ever met has been able to explain that. Odd.

      I've never had an issue understanding why the red-hot slippers would force the Queen to dance to death; it's surprising that so many people are expressing confusion about it. Obviously iron shoes heated over a fire would be incredibly painful to wear and so it makes sense that the Queen would instinctively keep moving her feet in an effort to get them off (similar to when you're at the beach during the summer and you step on hot sand, you want to keep lifting your feet to avoid the burn). The Queen moving in such a panicked way probably looked like dancing and I think she most likely died of exhaustion from not being able to stop.

      #ImaBeWaitingOnYouAtTheDoe i think i see which tale you're talking about. In Britany there is a field of dolmens and many fairy tales about it. I don't know their names but I heard one that said that druids (and random people) came to pray around those giant stones during the day. But at nights little korrigans would haunt these places, and make bonfire, music and dance arround the stones.
      If a human spotted the lights and decided to sneak on them to spy them, the korrigans would catch him and force him to dance with them all night around the stones until he dies from exaustion and we'd find his dead body in the field in the morning.
      As a kid i remember thinking bitch please i never get tired of dancing the korrigans can just try me x)! Was that the tale you were thinking about?

    The Grimm Brothers changed their original draft of this story because of several reasons:
    1.) original draft was a lot darker, with evil Queen actually being Snow White's birth mother, not the evil step-mother.
    2.) they made the change from mother to step-mother because they thought a mother wanting their own daughter dead was way to dark & that the story would be a lot more believable if the evil Queen was the step-mother, rather than the mother of Snow White.
    Sorry to correct you on this particular historical fact regarding the story of Snow White; but I agree with the Grimm Brothers about the original draft having been way too dark & can see why they thought a mother wanting to kill her child out of jealousy was so heinous that they changed the story to be a jealous step-mother...though step-mother s have been unfairly much maligned historically.

    So the reasons Disney changed the state of the dwarves house from super clean to super messy was to better establish the Dwarves' need to keep Snow White around. I mean if your a family of neat freak, germaphobe perfectionists, would you really trust a complete stranger who's been pampered her whole life to keep your house spotless and germ free???

    As I understood things, women around the time period Snow White was written were married off pretty much as son as their first period kicked in. Even though no time was mentioned to have passed, if snow white was 7 when she was first in the story, a normal assumption of time passage between all the attempts to kill her from the Queen might have made her more like 10, 12 or even 14. And if she was 14 then back then....yup she is ripe for the picking (I don't condone it, but that was the style at the time.)

  • @docmccrimmon4489
    @docmccrimmon4489 5 лет назад +3

    Depending on how much time had passed since she started staying with the dwarves, it’s not THAT surprising. Back then, being married by the time you’re 13 was pretty common, especially for nobility. And age differences weren’t a concern to them. They actually thought it was ‘the younger the better’ because that gave them more time to give sons.

      Nothing, actually. The Grimms brothers, if I’m correct, didn’t actually write the fairytales, instead they compiled and edited folktales from different cultures around them, so these tales were originally probably oral tales handed down the generations, and they were some of the first to write them down.
