Ever notice the fixes aren't usually too difficult, but are quite labor intensive to get the jobs done right? I think that's what keeps a lot of homeowners from doing the repairs themselves.
Yeah but all of them want to pay minimum wage to get it done. Well not all. But you get the idea.
I just wanted to share my own personal testimony in reference to oily rags I was working at a friend's house staining his front porch. When I finish the job I placed all the rags in a metal basin then placed everything in the back of my truck, 30 minutes later I needed to return to the truck to retrieve some tools I was very lucky because I arrived just in the nick of time the rags were smoldering with a small flame I was able to grab the basin pitch it out of my truck if it wasn't for the tools I need it my truck would have burned to a crisp
Oily Rags do catch on fire all by themselves its spontaneous combustion.
an electrician showed us pictures of a house fire caused by a spontaneous ignition waste from floor finishing. the damage was very serious

Good idea for smoothing out the ceiling with the drywall compound. But for all that work it takes to get a smooth finish, it's better to just scrape or sand off the original texture. I've worked with the 45min drywall compound and it's very hard and tough to sand. The dust it creates is very fine too and gets everywhere.

Why wouldnt you put the mortar in a grout bag and fill the cavity first and then put the rock back in and then trowel it?
Resheeting the ceiling is way easier.

ayyye, it's roger ( even though this is an older episode ).
If you’re going to skim over a texture ceiling, not using traditional plaster and instead opting for drywall filler then use a hawk and trowel apply your first coat thickish, use a speed skim / straight edge to flatten that first coat and use the second coat only for imperfections.
The idea should be to get it flat and smooth, I wouldn’t use 45min filler because ceilings can really be hard to work on and textured ceiling are even worse.
I have 2 story 120 year hand hewn old log cabin at the center of my home and the foundation literally is stacked rocks. Now from roof damage due to rain, has cause rotten logs, all 4 corners are starting to separate as well as bowing on walls. I don't know where to start or what type of person to call
Our neighborhood hardware was completely destroyed by a massive fire several years back. The cause? Improper disposal of oily rags that were used to clean up a spill! It’s a real thing
great information, at time 5:37 there is a tree on the left side of the house, is that one too close, I have a tree about 10 feet away my house, should I be concerned about the root damage the foundation? thanks
I was wondering the same thing!!! It seems like a catch 22 when it comes to having trees near the house.
@@powerofknowledge7771 ... on an older tree the roots will go out about as far as the branches. If you have kept the tree trimmed back over time it does help but nothing is perfect.

In my opinion, any tree that leans towards a house and can hit it, should be removed. At a minimum, no trees should be within 30 feet of any structure in my opinion as a non-tree professional.

İ need to lift one corner of the house then put some support underneath the footing. My question is, after lifting up the house, how am l supposed to fill the gap between footing and soil? Or it should be ok just the way it is? Can you guys gimme some ideas please thank you.
Late to the game here, but I'd imagine you would hire someone like a concrete leveler in that scenario to inject concrete underneath it--at least, that's how they do it with surface situations. Since you're dealing with footing, that same person or company might need to create a minor underpinning void of some sort to get the concrete in there. Otherwise, it might just be a new section of footing where they just say "screw it" and cut it out to be re-poured, etc. Just my two cents, so take it with a grain of salt.
Hi, When I was working (a long time ago) we had an emergency generator that worked from coal and because we never used it, we still had to control it. we did this with ten steel tubs that went through the coal and had thermometers at the end and these were checked daily. When the temperature got to 80 C, we had to move the heap of coal to another area thus cooling it down. This is the exact same reason why rags can catch fire as long as the conditions are right. Rags should be thrown away into a metal container with a metal lid on it.

The bonding between a stone and cement is mechanical because the stone is porice they should’ve painted the bonding agent on the stone if they wanted it to stick and pressure washed it because nothing sticks to dust!!

Anybody that uses easy sand products is either lazy or unskilled ! It’s soft never close to as hard as the drywall it’s on ! Have seen good quality primers peel off and wallpaper just fall off the walls with a layer of easy sand on them ! From a retired home builder .

Why do people think spray foam will stop water from leaking into their basement?
Because closed sell spray foam is basically water proof, easy to spray in, but doesnt stick to dust.

can't say I know many people who use an electric kettle over here. typically its over the stove or at the least over a hot plate when boiling water.
I see lots of people using them, at least in Minnesota!

@@rexwoods8663 Not too many people drink hot tea, and most people make coffee with automatic drip machines, not pour overs, French presses, etc so there isn't as much need for kettles. In addition, with our 120VAC power mains, the maximum wattage an electric kettle can draw is about 1500W, which is less than the power of kettles in 240V countries. It takes our electric kettles much longer to boil water that the stove can often be faster.

Easy Sand works great. Basically, it's the same component as plaster, calcium sulfate (plaster of Paris) with some minerals. Don't let the name fool you...sanding is one thing you want to avoid by troweling it on as smooth as possible. The homeowner should have had the bedroom totally cleared out before the painter arrived...would have saved time and not made the painter a furniture mover...lazy guy
As a contractor I can assure you customers never move a dam thing for you.
too bad, that ceiling was nice, except for the cracks around the edges.
I bet one thing you have checked out on that ceiling is that it probably got asbestos in it as I had my kitchen ceiling done about 40 years ago and memorial design and material contained asbestos as I had to have it checked before I had it taken off as we had to pay for it to be done as if I hadn’t painted over time it could have given me cancer so any ceiling abnormal should be checked first before doing any work on it ok.

Removing all of that mortar and some of those stones along that basement wall would be something I'd be terrified of doing. I wouldn't think it would take that much to destabilize a wall like that. If you ask me, they were gambling a bit by doing that, but then again, I'm not a mason or someone who has much experience in these things. But I know the horror stories you read about online about people who have walls buckle to collapse, which is often why you see the real basement waterproofing pros talk about engineering tabs when installing basement waterproofing French drains against cold joints. (It's a small tab of slab that they leave intact every X feet to ensure the wall doesn't try to undermine itself when removing the slab for the trenches they make to install the drain pipes.) So, by virtue of basic logic, one would then have reasons to suspect that a wall like the one in this video would be even more prone to collapse given the volatile, non-uniform construction method it was built with. Either way, she did a great job with it. It looks like, but I can't imagine that their work will prevent that water at that spot. For her sake, I hope I'm wrong.
That ceiling job was terrible. Should have sanded down the high spots first.

I saw nothing wrong with his technique. It’s the same thing I’ve done dozens of times with perfect results. It’s exactly like doing a plaster job, just a different medium. As long as it’s PREPPED CORRECTLY (Something a lot of people skimp/skip) there should be no issues.
