With sinners it could be both. I believe he does see them in some positive light, Friend probably too strong a word for now. Personally I see him being a villain of a season. Getting free from his deal causing lots of mayhem but in the end Charlie convinces him to stop. Maybe only temporarily but he does decide to hang around the hotel. I do not believe he will ever go to heaven though.
my take on it: he says "great Alastor, altruist, died for his friends" but only to mock what people wouldve thought if he died on the battlefield. If it werent for the deal he made, he wouldnt help the hotel at all - the stuff about "its just for entertainment" was a lie to cover up that he's forced to be there. That's probably also why he shut Husk down so harshly - if word got out about Alastor being under a deal, people could use it against him. He probably is hoping to use his favour from Charlie to find a way out of his deal, especially now that it almost got him killed, but tbh I hope he has a change of heart and ends up friends with them for reals eventually
I don’t think he wants to use it for himself, I think he wants to guide her in a direction of evil that could *possibly* benefit him or even Rosie in some way, wich is a parallel to how vaggie wants her to use her power. Vaggie is helping her and encouraging her to do good, while alastor is encouraging her and waiting for her to do the oppsite, although it’s not working very well. Both of them are quite literally the angel and the devil on her shoulder.
He did admit to Nifty that he might've grown accustomed to them a bit. But he's still not one who would selflessly sacrifice his soul for others and still has ulterior motives to fulfill.
I agree I think a lot of people are still not getting that Alastor isn't going to be redeemed or friendly for much longer, the dude wants 2 things freedom and entertainment and once he's free(probably from Lilith) then he just needs entertainment and if the hotel works that might actually be a threat to his entertainment in hell since if people actually start becoming better than a lot of mindless fighting and killing he likes watching/doing would start to stop
yeah, the tone of it seems to me like he is mocking the idea that people wouldve had if he had indeed died on the battlefield - they would have thought he was an altruist, honourable, died for the people he considered his friends. Instead, and perhaps to the disappointment of all who would think him to be acting in good faith, Alastor is only doing this because he made a deal with someone, presumably something along the lines of protecting Charlie in exchange for him receiving great magical power. Most likely a deal with Lillith, but who knows. And now that this deal has forced Alastor into a situation where he almost died, he REALLY wants out, he wants to find a way to escape his deal asap so that he can return to his position of power in full.
They are his friends according to the creator he is capable of making actual friends just with those he finds funny, in a negative way. But at the same time he totally wouldn't just die for them he would absolutely let them die and find it hilarious
@@darkespeon64 I think he genuinely has a good view of them. and is fond of them. however i do agree he would let them die at the drop of a hat. alastor likes them, but he primarily only cares for himself
Alastor definetly sarcasticly says "Alistor altruist dies for his friends" and doesn't mean this in a literal sense. He wants freedom and someone binds him to help Charlie. He would go insane if he had died and people said about him that he died altruistically for his friends. He wants power and freedom nothing more currently. Maybe he has minimal simpathy for Charlie but not enough to overshadow his ambitions
Exactly! He mentioned that he WAS starting to like them as friends in the beginning of the episode, but now, after his brush with second death and fearing those feelings are going to make him weak, he is willing to shove those blossoming good feelings away to focus on his own goals of freedom and taking over Hell for himself. This breakdown was the result of him literally being SCARED for his life and the realization that feeling those emotions nearly killed him, resulting in an Ignored Epiphany moment and doubling down on his mask of sanity and veneer to get Charlie to likely help free him.
Exactly. The point is he just STARTED to like the cast. Definitely not enough to sacrifice his life for them. He doesn't even consider them as friends as of now. His only goal is to find a way to weasel his way out of the deal, that restrains him. I really cant understand why people think that HE of all people is changing for the better. The man is literal monster.
@@jacobkusnerik8809 No, he said that he started feeling fond of seeing them celebrate before the inevitable death battle. Not really that he grew to like them as people.
@@vtnk7597 Multiple times in the pilot, he doesn't care about the hotel at all. He thinks it's a stupid idea, but he made a deal with someone to help Charlie for something in return. He only JUST started to like everyone at the hotel except Husk and Nifty who he's known previously. From the looks of it he doesn't want to work for the hotel anymore since he almost died for it, something that disgusts him.
@@vtnk7597He is under some sort of deal and has been, as confirmed with his conversation with Husker. He has no reasonable motive for helping Charlie beyond his meager excuse. Both he and Lilith have been absent for a few years for reasons unknown. It is not hard to put together that he’s likely under a deal with Lilith to help Charlie out. Here in this clip he is downright going mental that he almost freaking died because of that deal and is desperately trying to find a way out (through his deal with Charlie against Lilith no doubt). Additionally in the pilot, he appeared suspiciously just after Charlie’s phone call to Lilith.
I love how Alastor's earlier "what would the papers say???" Comes back in this song. When he talks about dying for his friends, he's imagining what the headlines would say if Adam had managed to kill him. His legendary rise to power and his overlord hunt would be forgotten, and his legacy would be that of a kind-hearted martyr who died helping sinners redeem themselves. That's unacceptable. He's the legendary Radio Demon, and he wants to make all of hell remember that they should fear him
It will be cool, because his motives, his ego, his smile, everything refers to the fact that he would not be bad at being a villain, but if this happens, it will be fantastic
@@Nightmare704RY It's not even remotely secret. From his introduction the show has made it exceedingly clear that he's only helping the hotel because he has ulterior motives.
@@Pyromic In past live streams it was stated that he only thinks of a smile as power. He is capable of frowning, he just doesn't bc he thinks the moment he stops smiling is the moment he lost. the stitches on his face don't represent a forced smile in fact the way they're angled it would be to stop his smile from going any further. It's just a design to show his connection to voodoo. Like a doll. If the stitches were to represent a forced smile it would go from the corner of his mouth and head up, not crisscross like your sewing something shut.
I'd suggest looking at the eyes and body language. The bit where he was grabbing his face, at 0:16 for example, the look in his eyes tells me that he's scared and maybe even confused as to what made him risk it all for a place he honestly didn't believe in at the start.
Just like he told Charlie: A smile is the best tool you can use as it inspires friends, keeps enemies guessing and no matter comes your way, you're always in control.
Am I the only one who sees him calling them "friends" as a mock? he evens calls himself altruist, almost like emphasizing what a dumb way of dying for such a trivial thing as "friends" that would be for him
I see it as the opposite, he's scared. You can see it in his face, he's terrified that he's actually getting attached and showed visible horror in the fact that even for a brief moment, he was really ready to die fighting Adam for Charlie and the gang. At this point he's even more desperate to find an exit from this deal he made because now he thinks that once he regains his "freedom" he can abandon Charlie with no consequences and go back to his sadistic ways.
It can be both. Whether he does like them or not, playing pretend friend by helping them helps his goals and influence with them, and their wellbeing is convenient and useful by proxy as assets, which is in a twisted way is kinda how friendship actually works. Whether or not he actually admits that he cares, he DID almost die for them, and the whole 'greatest dad' song doesn't really make too much sense if he doesn't care, he was waaaayyyyy too antagonistic to Lucifer for having just met (Unless Lillith is relevant to his backstory, but hopefully we find out soon!).
@@venusstar2963 Youre right that hes terrified, but not that hes attached to them as friends. Hes terrified that hes attached to them through his deal. I like to think the way he says “Great Alastor Altruist” as if it was just a title means he’s just pretending to be an ally purely to get in the good graces with Charlie
100% I saw it as the ‘good guy’ face he was putting on is finally coming off, he’s had enough. I guess nearly getting killed for something he really doesn’t care for is his breaking point, he wants out now.
@@wr5488 Personally I can believe that, I like to think he was like “What would a good guy do” and had been comfortable punching at his weight class for a while So he takes a shot at a bigger fish and nearly gets mauled for it, wounding his massive ego in front of everyone in Hell for a cause he didn’t even believe in and was only using for a means to an end
It is much more complciated than that i think. He said it like the title of a news boarcast. He's admitted to nifty he likes them, nifty being far, far closer to him tahn anyone else, and nifty is als ofond of them. But that is not what he wants to be known for, he is not selfless and does not want to be thought by such a meager title despite developing fondness for them. He is actually all for whatever plan he's been forced into, which seems to be to manipualte charlie into becoming... something. But HE wants to be the one to benefit from it at the end, not the holder of his leash.
He says it like he's reciting what someone else would say if he actually died right there, so basically even if he were to die he does not want to go out because he was helping someone else
Alastor is slowly but surely losing what little sanity he has left. He can't stand the fact that he actually took a liking to Charlie and her friends. He doesn't want to be seen as a hero, he wants to be feared.
He's more losing sanity over the fact that, in spite of being one of Hell's most powerful beings, he's on a leash to a currently unknown entity (many say it's Lilith, but since she's in Heaven, I don't how that's possible) and wants to get out of it asap and then strive to become THE most powerful force in all of Hell and if Charlie and the Hotel are his way of achieving that, then he will use them until such time he no longer has any need of them.

I have a theory that Alastor physically can’t stop smiling like he said in the last episode “just because some is smiling doesn’t mean that how they feel” or something like that and when he made a deal with Charlie you can see that is mouth looks like it was stitches into a smile so he probably can’t stop smiling even when if he doesn’t want to smile so take that theory how you will
I don’t think people understand what Alastor means here. When he says “Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends” he isn’t talking about himself, it’s what other people would say about him if he had died. They would think he was selfless and that he cared about the others, but here he flat out says they’re not friends. He doesn’t want people to view him that way, hence why he says “that is not how this ends”. I think deep down he cares for them, but he isn’t admitting they’re friends unfortunately.
@@Ilovekaiju yeah i think it’s hard to believe he cares about them, but the fact he’s a killer/cannibale has nothing to do with it. Angel is a killer and Rosie is a cannibal and they’re both sweeties. It’s just that he prides his power above any possible relationships.

I’m surprised nobody is talking about the beginning of the episode when Alastor and Nifty are watching the others. It’s like you could see a slight genuine smile on his face. Alastor probably sees any emotional connections as a huge weakness which is why he immediately shuts down anything about friendship. It’s really sad but still a cool character trait
alastor is a villain, you cant convince me otherwise, while giving us nothing the series hinted towards it a lot w stuff they showed or said homelander from the boys was the scariest villain for me for a while, alastor has taken that spot easily, because he can be scary on a leash, imagine without

It is meant as a headline on a magazine. He believes it to be ridiculous and outright hilarious that he out of all people would do that, because he doesn’t want to. He is selfish and he has ambition. He wants to use Charlie to break out of his deal with… someone. Probably Lilith. The prospect that he nearly died right here and there despite his ambition and that OTHERS might have considered this to be a „noble sacrifice for his friends“ is just hilarious to him. I don’t want to say that he does not consider them to be friends, but I would rather say that he regards them more as tools than actual people he loves. He is a psycho in all it’s fabulous glory and he owns it. Sadly I don’t think that he is capable of true love, because he won’t sacrifice himself for anyone at this point in the story. He DOES care for them, but now he's too selfish about his own goals and scared for his own life. As such, he is willing to push those blossoming feelings away (maybe for good), buckle down on his mask of veneer and sanity he has exuded (remember what he told Charlie about smiles being valuable tools), and doubling his efforts to break his bonds and take over Hell for himself.
Analysis: The first two lines of this part are simply describing the atmosphere. "And I barely escaped being killed by a hair" Pretty self explanatory since bro almost died cause of Adam "Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends" I think this is implying on how people will see him if they found out he almost died. Because he's image-conscious, he looks like he's panicking. I mean, imagine, one of the most powerful and heartless beings, almost died trying to defend the hotel. Everyone would think that Alastor had a soft spot for them, and maybe he did grow one, but didn't realize it. "Sorry to disappoint, that is not where this ends" Also pretty self explanatory. He simply says he ain't gonna die yet and that Alastor will ensure his reputation won't change. "I'm hungry for freedom like never before" Now, personally I think he made a deal with someone(Lilith or maybe Charlie), which to Alastor, hindered him, leading to his almost-death. "The constraints of my deal surely have a back door" This is basically saying that the deal he made with someone backfired on him and now he's suffering because of it. He also is trying t be optimistic, that there's a way out for this "mess". "Once I figure out how to unclip my wings, guess who will be pulling all the strings" Once he gets out of his mess, then he'll go back to being even more psychotic than ever
I dont think Alastor meant that he actually sees them as his friends or cares "Great Alastor altrulist, died for his friends" An altrulist is someone who is selfless, who does things for others without expecting anything in return. He doesnt want to be remembered as that, he wants power.
YES, people really seem to not notice the ( " " ) in the text indicating that it's some sort of narration. It's what people could've remembered alastor if he actually died
Love how the animators worked so that even tho he's constantly smiling, you can tell his real emotions with the rest of his facial and body movements. Incredible
How did you think he died tho? We basically get confirmation that he isn't dying, by his own words. "Radio's not dead, but it is ending this broadcast." He is the Radio Demon, he is "radio", and he's just tapping out of the fight
This scene and the scene where he was with Nifty talking I think is showing some cracks in Alastor. He might be going a tad bit soft but is still evil and self focused.
I love how people are acting like Alastor secretly cares for the members of the hotel, even though this is clearly him having a breakdown at the idea that anyone would think such a thing and that if he HAD died that’s exactly what they would think. He doesn’t care about these people, he’s trapped there under contract and almost died for said contract
i don't think it is even about power though. About image.... He';s manipulating charlie under lilith's orders. everyhting he's doen is because of lilith's designs, aside for making that deal with charlie. BUT he's actually all for this plan..... but he wants to be the man behind it all. the mastermind, not a meager pawn that was nearly sacraficed to take out the king.
Now I love Alastor. He's my favorite character. He is fun as hell (pun intended) to watch and he steals the show every time he's on screen. But I'm not pretending he's a good person. As he said, his smile might be hiding his true intentions, but I can almost guarantee that those intentions are nefarious. Especially since "Great Altruist Alastor died for his friends." He's going to do absolutely anything to get out of that deal, and he's the kind of guy who doesn't give a damn who gets hurt along the way, even if they've shown him kindness in the past. He is a demon, through and through and he loves it. There are some irredeemable monsters out there, and he is one of them. I personally can't wait to see what he does next.
Bro said "I barely escaped being killed by a hair" and next time we see him he's completely fine, like he probably could've jumped right back in the fight if he can heal that quickly
'Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends'. He's sickened by the idea of having friends and even more disgusted by the concept of him dying for them.
He is not in control at all. He is outclassed by an angel and nothing he can currently do about it. Him smiling here is just him trying to feel in control of the situation.
im pretty sure that the reason he lost was bc he gains his powers somewhat from the radio, the more people that fear him the stronger he gets, thats why he was a bit weaker than before, he did completely kill all overlords once he arrived.
I think that while still a selfish and horrible person, the line of "Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends" is indeed a mockery of what the situation would seem like if he'd died, this doesn't mean that he isn't developing some sort of attachment towards some of the gang. Also, it is pretty clear that him fighting Adam wasn't for the rest of the gang, I'm not sure if him fighting Adam was purely for him (Maybe wanting Adam's soul, or just making a statement of his power) but the deal "keeps his wings clipped" so he's not at his stronger, or if on the other hand he was somehow forced to confront Adam because of the deal, and having been so close to death because of it is what reinforces his desire to break the deal and unclip his wings, thus not having to risk his life like that again

Thank you. That's it! Why does everyone think he has gone soft all of a sudden? :D
maybe its lucifer seeing as to how they hate eachother and how you said the deal binds him to help charlie

Additionally in the pilot, he appeared suspiciously just after Charlie’s phone call to Lilith.
maybe i need to see the pilot again, thanks
I love how Alastor's earlier "what would the papers say???" Comes back in this song. When he talks about dying for his friends, he's imagining what the headlines would say if Adam had managed to kill him. His legendary rise to power and his overlord hunt would be forgotten, and his legacy would be that of a kind-hearted martyr who died helping sinners redeem themselves. That's unacceptable. He's the legendary Radio Demon, and he wants to make all of hell remember that they should fear him
Alastor seriously about to go on his angsty villain arc 😭
If that happens.Them my chair is gonna be dead from all the emotions
I’m pretty sure he’s already got a villain arc
It will be cool, because his motives, his ego, his smile, everything refers to the fact that he would not be bad at being a villain, but if this happens, it will be fantastic
Isn't he already in one? He's going for the "secret bad guy" for a while now.

If the stitches were to represent a forced smile it would go from the corner of his mouth and head up, not crisscross like your sewing something shut.
that damn smile never lets me know how he really feels
I'd suggest looking at the eyes and body language.
The bit where he was grabbing his face, at 0:16 for example, the look in his eyes tells me that he's scared and maybe even confused as to what made him risk it all for a place he honestly didn't believe in at the start.
Means that his intention for keeping it no matter what is working perfectly

Am I the only one who sees him calling them "friends" as a mock? he evens calls himself altruist, almost like emphasizing what a dumb way of dying for such a trivial thing as "friends" that would be for him
yeah I think hes doing that too. I think hes going to distance himself. Yk him being the sadistic scary radio demon.
Charlie is stirring up trouble beyond even his power and he is forced to be a part of it, which might get him killed. 100%
I saw it as the ‘good guy’ face he was putting on is finally coming off, he’s had enough. I guess nearly getting killed for something he really doesn’t care for is his breaking point, he wants out now.
@@wr5488 Personally I can believe that, I like to think he was like “What would a good guy do” and had been comfortable punching at his weight class for a while
So he takes a shot at a bigger fish and nearly gets mauled for it, wounding his massive ego in front of everyone in Hell for a cause he didn’t even believe in and was only using for a means to an end
He wants to be the mastermind not the martyr in someone else's plan.
But that is also it.
He’s clearly bound by a deal to help Charlie out (my guess, by Lilith)
The dude almost went mad on the thought of people looking at him as nice person who sacrificed himself for his friends

I don’t think people understand what Alastor means here.

He DOES care for them, but now he's too selfish about his own goals and scared for his own life. Rewatching this after the leaks makes me think more into it 😂
His facial expressions make me think he's desperate to alleviate whatever deal he made. Almost like he's going crazy over it.
Analysis:
The first two lines of this part are simply describing the atmosphere.
"And I barely escaped being killed by a hair"
Pretty self explanatory since bro almost died cause of Adam
"Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends"
I think this is implying on how people will see him if they found out he almost died. Because he's image-conscious, he looks like he's panicking. I mean, imagine, one of the most powerful and heartless beings, almost died trying to defend the hotel. Everyone would think that Alastor had a soft spot for them, and maybe he did grow one, but didn't realize it.
"Sorry to disappoint, that is not where this ends"
Also pretty self explanatory. He simply says he ain't gonna die yet and that Alastor will ensure his reputation won't change.
"I'm hungry for freedom like never before"
Now, personally I think he made a deal with someone(Lilith or maybe Charlie), which to Alastor, hindered him, leading to his almost-death.
"The constraints of my deal surely have a back door"
This is basically saying that the deal he made with someone backfired on him and now he's suffering because of it. He also is trying t be optimistic, that there's a way out for this "mess".
"Once I figure out how to unclip my wings, guess who will be pulling all the strings"
Once he gets out of his mess, then he'll go back to being even more psychotic than ever
I dont think Alastor meant that he actually sees them as his friends or cares
"Great Alastor altrulist, died for his friends"
An altrulist is someone who is selfless, who does things for others without expecting anything in return.
He doesnt want to be remembered as that, he wants power.

Even if Alastor smiles, you could still see the panic, stress and turmoil in his eyes

Especially since "Great Altruist Alastor died for his friends."

His eyes say he's a bit anxious and furious though.
I want a solo like this verse from Alastor in Season 2
