  • Part 3 of my 1969 Honda Z50a (k1) Mini Trail bike restoration.
In this video I get the gas tank, frame, wheels, etc. all stripped down, repaired, and painted to look brand new, just like it did back in 1969.
    Thanks for watching!
Stay tuned for more videos on the progress of this build, and a final video in spring of 2022 once it is finished.

    👏🏼 great!
How did you mask off the z50 tank to get the correct line for the red and silver paint.?

Thanks! Before restoring it, the tank was painted black over the original paint. When I stripped it down I took measurements and photos of where the line was. When it came to painting, after all the bodywork and epoxy primer was on I wet sanded it, then sprayed everything (including red parts) with the silver base coat (3 coats). After that was dry to the touch (I think maybe an hour) I laid the masking tape down to mask off what was to remain silver, then immediately laid down 3 coats of the red base coat over that. Immediately after the last coat, while it was still wet, I pulled the masking tape off the silver. Once the red was dry to the touch, I laid down a few coats of the clear top coat. That was all done one night after work, so it made for an extremely late and tiring night.

I know nothing about bodywork, I've seen some primer before bondo, some not. Is one preferred?. Love the vid!

Thanks for watching and the compliment! I am fortunate enough to have had the experience working in a body shop part/full time from the age of 14 - 22, learning basically everything over the years working there. Best to strip completely down to bare steel and use filler as needed directly on the bare steel. After that, use a filler primer and block out again, then your epoxy primer/sealer… wet set with fin grit, then paint. If blasting something but not going to work on it right again, spray it with epoxy primer/sealer so that it doesn’t start oxidizing.
