Worked instantly for me. People were having a hard time hearing me over phone calls mentioning I sounded quiet and muffled. I tested this in the voice memos app and would have to speak very loud to get it to pick up my voice. It seems that no matter how clean you keep the bottom, over time that paper film behind the grill will become an issue. Thanks for the tip!

Works! I had two pair of AirPods: 1 pair that the mic stopped working after having for a year and a 2nd pair that the mic stopped working after getting water in them. All I could do with them was listen to music and watch videos. After doing this to both pairs, I can now use them to talk on the phone again. Tested it out on voice memos and the sound picks up just as it did when I first got them.
Yes, this will cause minor damage to your AirPods (ex. some mesh will come out) but I’d rather deal with that than pay hundred plus dollars on a new pair. For the time being, this will do! Thank you for this video!!

Quick question is it bad that you can see the white part on the bottom? Of the airpods because one of them is like that (right one) and the other one isn’t(left one) the right one sounds glitchy and muffled when I voice record but then the right one sound perfectly fine…I don’t know if they are broken

So stoked this worked for me. I used a thick sewing needle. My girlfriend washed them and mic wasn’t working so she bought new ones. Now have a pair of working airpods!

To those who have tried resetting your phone and headset and still have a problem on your microphone when on a call. This is the perfect solution. It works perfectly. You might be worried because the protection on your mic is lost so better do it on just ONE earphone. 🤪 Lol Atleast if it will cause damage you still got the spare one.
I might try remove the other peace once I am sure it no effect on the performance.

Question once you remove the mesh is there anyway we can get something to replace that? At least to give the microphone protection, i figure that if you keep using them on regular basis stuff can go in there and make it worse?

This worked for me. I had an issue where the microphone didn't pick up the sound when I started talking. So it worked, but with a few second delay. This looks really wrong, I was sceptic about it but went with it since I was out of ideas. Now the microphone works perfectly. Still a bit concerned about the protection, but hey... At least they'll work for a while more :D
I have the same issue, but i"m pretty skeptical about this. I can't call for hey siri again, and i havee like a 2 second delay before it picks up my voice

I did everything as in the video, but it didn't affect the microphone. It works, but periodically, Voice Memos app shows that the sound appears and disappears. Has anyone encountered such a problem? What to do? Reset tried a thousand times.

Was not sure if this would work, as my wife was asking me to take the pods and show them at service centre. But work like magic my left buds started working again and the issue with microphone was solved. Thank you so much
If anyone else found that this didn't work, here's a few things to try. I did them all but don't know which worked :')
~ used air pump to clear the mics
~ connected them to another device (android) and tested them (they worked)
~ forced restarted my phone and connected them
