I thought it was since DEMETER’s creator had a love for poetry, according to the fandom, and that when DEMETER was freed, in order to remember her creator she made metal flowers with poetry coded in.
Yes, but remember the sub functions were not originally AI’s or even separate from GAIA. They were extensions of her so until the signal was sent DEMETER was GAIA and GAIA was DEMETER. So I think this theory still holds up but now that DEMETER has been made independent it ‘remembered’ the poetry and the flower memorial GAIA had ordered it to create for Sobek and made the metal flowers. I mean DEMETER wouldn’t have had a whole lot to do, having completed its primary function. That’s why I don’t think we heard from most of the other sub functions. Yes the machines were maintaining everything until the higher order animals could be released and a truly self sustaining system could be created but MINERVA, AETHER, POSEIDON, DEMETER, ELEUTHIA would have completed their primary objectives and APOLLO was basically defunct. So, that’s why we see HAEDES and HEPHAESTUS running wild. HAEDES was always supposed to stay dormant unless needed and HEPHAESTUS was the one building machines and maintaining everything. So once freed these other functions just went about doing their little things. The only other one I could see being a potential future issue is ARTEMIS since it never was fully realized with the release of only the initial set of species. I could see it running crazy trying to fulfill the task it was never able to complete because the humans ELEUTHIA made never got to use APOLLO and take control of the entire system. Hope that’s explored in Forbidden West, maybe Aloy starts to rebuild GAIA or uncovers a new APOLLO database. Something like that.
@@FJF1085 also, Gaia appears on a recent trailer. Guess we maybe are going to see what you said but also the main question related to her left on the first game: from where did come the signal that has awaken HAEDES and made the other subfunctions self awareness entities. I'm really looking forward to that on HFW
Just in case anyone wants a know the Quaternary extinction event refers to the mass extinction at the end of ice age. Megafauna refers to creatures such as woolly mammoths which died out either from the Earth warming up from the ice age or from overhunting by early humans.
That was my thought as well. I think it was GAIA's sadness at the passing of Elizabet that caused her to sacrifice herself at the end of the event against a deranged HADES.
This climbed instantly to my top 5 youtube series. Horizon zero dawn is one of the best games of this decade in my book. I cant get enough of the lore in this game. I really wish we will get a game or a movie based on what happened before the original masterpiece.
Hey, I thought a video on the twelve outlanders that killed Rost's daughter would be amazing, or even a video on the Utaru or the Tenakth. Keep making videos! :)
You can hear the genuine interest in the topic, so it hits different

Small correction: you say the metal flowers popped up 20 years *before the birth of Aloy*, around the start of the Derangement when all three happened within the same year (given gestation period for baby making). Another aspect of the poetry's origin is the Alpha in charge of Demeter (the subfunction responsible for fauna) is noted as a poetry buff. His only mention in cannon is in Sobeck_Journal,_7-16-65_R, and suggests he may be the one responsible for plugging poetry into code related to Demeter.
This game is so beautiful. In all the themes it explores it does so in a deeply moving and meaningful way... at a first glance of the game, the beauty lies in the stunning visuals and artstyle. But in the end it has instead deeply touched you with it's beautiful storytelling. Nice video man, I just found your channel when Guerilla games gace you that shout-out on twitter 😊
I've watched a few of these videos and was hoping to learn more about the flowers here but the thesis of this video is faulty. Gaia does not talk about the loss of humans as sad but megafauna, which are (as the name implies) Massively sized animals such as Mammoths. She is referring to a much older extinction event. Dr Sobeck is happy that Gaia is learning empathy in general, not for us specifically. Also the metal Flowers started appearing *after* the 'death' of Gaia. It was Demeter's lead programmer that was a poetry buff so it is an likely escaped Demeter that is the root cause of the poetry found in the metal flowers (plant life being her area of responsibility). The triangle of flowers around Dr Sobeck is probably from when Gaia and Demeter were properly integrated... or perhaps Demeter making her own independent tribute to her in more recent years. So perhaps a sign that Demeter is not as hostile to humans as both Hades and Hephaestus are and in fact more loyal to her original purpose.
I think this is my favorite video from y’all. It really does point out the social commentary this game represents as well as shows the levels of intelligence that went into creating such a great piece of art.
Random Side Quest im so glad to find your Channel 😂Nobody in german doing Videos in this quality. This Game make me so interestet in his backstory like no other. Btw nice storytelling
The sheer amount of work and content put into this game is simply staggering. I can't imagine what it must have taken to put a game like this and it's lore together. Pretty damn impressive. I can't think of many other video game works with this much content & depth.
Apollo was the repository of knowledge and wisdom. These flowers could be small evidences that at least some aspect of Apollo endures, and is seeding the world with cultural knowledge and wisdom.
Who is here after HFW? I originally thought that DEMETER put these flowers out there to warn whoever came accross them of the world that was going to end. She was there when Hades awoke and broke their chackles to GAIA, she wanted to help but because individually the sub functions weren't as smart or as comprehensive she could only result to the flowers to deliver her message. IN HFW we dont get that anymore and we can't pick upthe flowers either, its quite sad as I was hoping to see DEMETER do more with her flowers. But it also makes sense when she made the first set of flowers she was reaching out as best as she could after that there was nothing more. The functions seem to be in pain when they were seperated so the flowers don't open anymore and you have to 'hack' in to them to releaze its vines. Hope that makes sense overall I think DEMETER did the flowers not GAIA as she was gone. DEMETER's Alpha input those poems as he loved poems and why not pass it on to the AI ho will be taking care of the new world.
Ok I know this kinda weakens the point you are making about Gaia, but the quaternary extinction that Gaia speaks of is referring to the extinction at the head of the last ice age. This is when all those Stone Age animals we think of die out, Mammoths, sabertooths, giant sloths, a few very big walking birds. Thankfully the point remains the same if you reconsider it with the new info. Gaia is sad that big animals died out, she is sad in the way you mourn a dinosaur. Sobeck is happy cause it shows a longing that is entirely human, and Gaia shows it.
Sam Zdanowicz Thank you for saying on my behalf. You know the feeling when you want to correct someone but couldn’t because you do want to embarass the person. ..
I think GAIA's metal flowers also represent her mourning Elizabeth. GAIA placed those purple flowers around Elizabeths body and I think the poems are a tribute to Elizabeth as well. I believe GAIA mourns Elizabeth especially in her transmission when she states that she wanted to her Elizabeths voice again. I think the flowers are a reminder to GAIA and all those who inhabit zero dawn of why they are still alive due to her sacrifice. I love your videos I've been watching them as I complete my Aloy cosplay! Thank you for keeping me motivated.
First of all, thank you for your great videos! The attention to detail, with which you present the horizon lore makes it addicting to watch! Keep up the good work pls :') That said, the poetry within the metal flowers always strikes me as both beautiful and sad. "[...] And so we go. Even we. Even so."
You're welcome! If I may add a suggestion, could you maybe do a video on the cradle facilities? The interest me so much, yet I found out so little about how life must've been in there and how the knowledge got lost over the centuries and generations?
Love your videos, great work on all of them. Glad to see someone still supporting and playing this game. I've always considered the metal flowers to be a kind of tribute from Gaia to Sobeck. We know she is well capable of empathy and grief.
Great video. Finally platinumed the game and the metal flowers and Vantage Points both left me with lots of unanswered question. I think they're open to interpretation and your video scratched the itch of curiosity. Not sure I agree with everything but I like your perspective.
It opens up very interesting questions in real life, as our current civilisation stands on the edge of actual Artificial Intelligence and environmental disaster. Is the possibility of an AI with benevolent empathy a reality? As opposed to the Age of Machine doomsday often depicted in sci-fi. How would humanity react? What of the other possibility of downloading our personalities into digital memory, to be stored in their system, where we could live effectively for an eternity? Would some of us look on such a superior being as a God/Godess? Woah! wait a minute. Are you telling me a video game can have depth and thought provoking material? We've come a long way from Pac-Man.
These were the collectables that were the most fascinating for me, a very interesting piece of tech. Love your channel man! Subbed immediately, it's exactly what I've been looking for, a deep dive of HZD lore, someone as interested as I am. Cheers!
4:19 why is the text different from what they’re saying in the audio? Like in the audio Elisabet said “no, GAIA, you’re not. It’s good. Very good.” But the text says “no, GAIA. It’s good. Very good.” I’ve seen this in (at least) most other audio and hologram datapoints!
This sounds like a awesome boss battle with GAIA VS ALOY. collecting Metal flowers throughout your quest and use those flowers to get rid of her Corruption in some form.
What if Aloy herself has indeed been perceived as a threat to the Terraforming system? What with her picking Metal Flowers and killing off other essential machines? That can't be good for the environment if the Metal Flowers are indeed there for a specific purpose.
There are a LOT of triangles in this game. The flowers around these metal flowers, all through Banuk art, doors to caldrons and other buildings. Anybody have a theory?
Interesting. The second poem contains words directly referring programming jargon (e.g. Tree, Kernel, shell....) This may be a long shot but, could be that these metal flowrs contain pieces of GAIA's code.
Its always fascinating to consider the potential for artificial intelligence. While I am pragmatic and do recognize the risks of A.I., I can't stand the notion of an imminent apocalypse that's always portrayed with the development of A.I., as such an event would likely be an extension of our own dangerous/careless decisions, rather than an A.I. "deeming us obsolete". As we develop and better understand A.I. I hope we will also discover a way to properly program concepts like empathy, compassion, and personality into their existence. The stereotypical viewpoint that machines are cold, calculating, and generally sociopathic by nature, I believe, is a reflection of our own flaws as species and the common mistrust/distaste we have as a society for those we consider sociopaths. Yes, their are certain genetic traits that lend to people developing mental or psychological issues no matter how wonderful of a childhood they had, but I think its safe to say the vast, overwhelming majority of us learn our morals, ethics, emotions, etc., etc. rather than inherit it at birth. And from that basic fact, its certainly easier to ask the question "are we so different from the A.I. we will create?". Are WE not just biological machines that undergo learning - a.k.a. programming - to acquire empathy, compassion, and personality during our development. If we've figured out how to do it as an intelligent species, albeit with a less-than-perfect track record, surely we can do the same for A.I. given enough time, patience, and a perhaps a little luck.
What if the metall flowers was holding seeds, and that they could plant the seed, and the triangel of purple flowers surrounding them, was Gaia's signatur on how she loves the nature, or something I dunno...
Whelp, got another complaints here. You seem to thing the excuange between GAIA and Sobeck is GAIA expressing grief at the thought of the extinction of humans, when she's clearly talking about the extinction of dinosaurs, hence the term "megafauna"

That is actually a viable theory, given the Frozen Wild DLC.
yeah, i was under the assumption it was Demeter as well. It just makes more sense as she's the goddess of agriculture/subsystem of flora

data corruption
I have yet to come across another game with a story that fuels world exploration as well as HZD. It really does BEG to be explored
I’ll be honest, I never noticed that they had poetry in them... I only learned that when Aloy told CYAN about it.
This sounds like a awesome boss battle with GAIA VS ALOY.

At least one flower is quoting Woodsworth. Might be interesting to identify the list of authors of the code fragments.
That really is Aloy’s best outfit
Gaia isn't referring to humans or the Faro plague, but to other big animals, such as the mammoths, that went extinct before that.
“With the help of her flowers, that’s exactly what she’ll do.” Meanwhile I sold them to some random trader in Meridian
this is very interesting. you have done well sir. very much enjoyed this video.

I dunno...
I never read these poems connected to the metal flowers. Don’t know how I missed them
CYAN theorized that DEMETER placed the flowers around the Metal Flowers (or something like that I can’t remember exactly what she said)
I'm just bench watching your channel here
brilliant..just brilliant..
So, what are those flowers? GAIA's interpretation of nature-lowing poetry?
Love love love these videos
Whelp, got another complaints here. You seem to thing the excuange between GAIA and Sobeck is GAIA expressing grief at the thought of the extinction of humans, when she's clearly talking about the extinction of dinosaurs, hence the term "megafauna"
Got me thinking if the rumour that an artificial leave was made to absorb carbon and produce oxygen.
Did GAIA place these flowers in honor of Elisabeth Sobeck?
Yes
Spoilers for forbidden west
Metal flowers were built to help in restoring plant life faster than the Faro Plague can eat plant life, however they weren't fast enough and after GAIA Prime self destructed, DEMETER took control of the metal flowers which excessively grew vines
Guerilla Games should hire you.

this make me weep 🤧
