I always believed Islam and being a Muslim (submitting to the will of Allah) started with prophet Adam a.s and different messengers were sent to their people throughout history to remind them of the oneness of Allah and stop immorality. Those who followed were Muslims and will be granted Jannah, those who didn’t were disbelievers. However, prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam, was the final messenger key word here is final so he was sent to all of humanity not just one group of people. The Quran is the final message and revelation from Allah so if you accept and follow Islam the organized religion this time you are a believer and if not a disbeliever. This makes sense as there will be no more prophets or messengers. How can you be granted Jannah without having prayed a single prayer? If your friend believes in the oneness of Allah he should follow islam and the LAST prophet Muhammad saw and become a Muslim.

And this is where the opinions come from. We say the people without a prophet were Hanifs. And yes the others were Muslims. But after our Prophet, this was redefined. The technical meaning had changed. And what you are saying is, these people are Hanifs. To be a Muslim, the one who submits, it is to also accept and obey the Prophet. Then there is Imaan a level higher, which as you say, is shown via the 5 pillars, obeying sharia etc. Which rational person accepts an after life? What I'm saying is, chances are slim to find a person who believes in one creator. And a hereafter. Why would you think you are gonna see him, or there is heaven and hell? It's perfectly acceptable to think about we'll be worm food. The revelation tells us about the hereafter. So no one fits your definition. Also consider the seerah.
Brother I’m half way through. How would you get guidance without accepting the prophethood of Muhammad and Quran. The last 2 ayahs of Al Baqarah believe in all the Prophets and all the revelations. Maybe you get to that at the end. Let’s see I’ve moved forward 52 minutes now. Okay how can you connect without Salah and Quran.
