It's amazing how often Management is shocked that an engineer can write and keep detailed records.

    • @Ocrilat
      @Ocrilat 3 года назад +18

Smart people do it. I covered my ass by saving copies of board minutes when I called them out on illegal actions. They backpedaled. Then when they ordered me to alter the minutes to cover things up, I saved the originals. Later on they tried again, and I resigned in protest. I hinted about those copies, and they stopped f-ing with me over my cashing out my vacation time, back pay and other stuff. Always keep records. Always have copies.

@Thomas I'll take your word for it...I have never done either. My only experience engineering-wise was my grandfather, who was a self-taught electronics engineer. With a high school diploma and a correspondence course in drafting, he got a job as a draftsman for IBM. Worked his way up and ended his career as an engineer and one of the designers of the U.S. Navy's first surface to surface missiles.

I'm retired, my hair is gray and white (but still there!) and I walk with a cane due to work related injuries.
My wife and I got on a crowded train. She spotted 2 seats together and successfully dashed for them, with me trailing behind at my own top speed. Sadly, my top speed was no match for the 20something gal that sped past me and plopped down next to my amused wife.
I finally got to the seats and stood next to my wife holding the bar for support. "Took me a bit, but I made it!"
At this moment, the young lady realized that not only was this disabled old man with the lady next to her, but that she had snatched the seat intended for me! Face reddening slightly she started to apologize and surrender the seat, but I told her to stay put, my dad raised me right and I would have given my seat to the lady anyway. We argued back and forth for a moment until my wife leaned over and stage-whispered to her "give up honey. I don't know you, but I can tell you that he's a LOT stubborner than you are."
At that, a young Hispanic man seated behind my wife started laughing and stood up. "Sorry for waiting so long, I wanted to see how this played out. Take my seat jefe." I tried to tell him I'm fine, thanks anyway, but he wasn't having it. "I was raised right too, and if my mama found out that I sat while an older gentleman stood, she'd pound me with her slipper. You may be stubborn, but mama can hit a running target at 20 paces with that slipper!" Slapped me on the shoulder and walked off.
No Karen, no entitlement, just an oops with a fun ending for all!

Also at one point in my career with BRITISH RAIL and whilst working as a train guard came to my train to find over a dozen people crammed into my brake van and i could not open the inward opening doors to get in ( this was on ancient 1951 slam door stock ). I went and saw my driver informing him there would be a delay as i could not get in. We were the last passenger service to leave the station before it closed for the night. I then rang the train crew supervisor to ask for back up and police presence. Eventually after several "Rows" about shortage of seats, the removal of about eight people, so i had access to doors on both sides, my bell equipment and voice-com system to the driver we we left. I had one little old lady sitting in my chair. An elderly man plus his dog and a young woman with double pushchair. These people had all spoken nicely, were no problem at all. The problem swearing, shouting trouble makers got removed by Police and that was that.

That old engineer story reminds me of a story my dad told he is a teacher at this skill school that teaches kids in multiple school districts with different jobs(police, health, pet care, auto, personal fitnesses and cooking) my dad is one of two people in our half of the state that can do certain jobs. My dad was also the person that set up internships for multiple students and advised for multiple schools on certain actions, he was even the union rep one year and fucked the school over with it. My dad is a hard working nice teacher he’s the teacher you never forget for his helpfulness. He even coaches hockey teams for years. The school got some new bosses and the one really hated my dad. He hated my dad so much he got rid of the whole department my dad was in to get rid of him. My dad being so senior in the school just got moved over to a different spot. This guy did everything he could to get rid of my dad and failed. Years ago the boss and others that hated my dad for some reason all got busted for drinking on the job and all fired. The funniest thing is my dad when he retires it would take nearly three teachers to even fill the gap he would leave.

I went down to London to see a surfboards, in my wheelchair. The train ride home was so full, I was told to fold my chair up, but not 1 person would give me a seat, I stood there, gripping the door bars so hard, in so much pain, that I was quietly crying to myself. People really can be oblivious, or just plain rude, at times. Not sure which. When I did eventually get a seat, 2 stations later, it turned out I was in a carriage that was being uncoupled, and had to get off that 1 and move further up the remainder of the train! NOT a good day for me!

For the first story, THAT’S WHY nobody wants to be a hostess in a restaurant! If you want to please an entitled customer, you might have to face unhappy waiters/waitresses having not a «good» section that day. Every single day, there will be a «displeased with your work» attitude from the staff or the customers.😫😤 The worst part though is, during a busy lunch time or supper time, a couple insists to have a table for four when you have free tables for two and, when you explain to them those tables are for three and more people, it is a busy time and everybody wants a table soon so they can go out soon, the couple responds to you that it is none of their concerns and, if they cannot have a big table, they will go somewhere else. If you have a spineless floor manager on top of that, it’s a very frustrating not well payed job.

Second story, that is not how IP works. The company would have a license agreement in place and pay royalties for use of them if he brought the patents with him when he joined the company. That kind of stuff is not done on a handshake. If he got the patents while working for the company then the company would own them anyway since assigning IP rights to the employer for any relevant inventions is standard in tech employment contracts, and since they are unionized there would definitely be an employment contract.
If he subsequently left the company those agreements would still be in place, so it would no impact on their operations.
If someone is presenting themselves as irreplaceable and holding that over a company in a dysfunctional way, then you HAVE to get rid of them. Getting rid of this guy was the correct decision if the post is to be believed.

In essence, I AM that engineer, a product design engineer with over 45 years experience & over 60 patents that have made the companies I’ve worked for hundreds of millions of dollars. There is “the inventor” (me) & there is “he assignee” (the company, which has the rights to produce & profit from the inventions). Part of my job, at every company, is “inventing things”, for which they pay me really well, usually with stock bonuses for each invention, and lots of “liberties” (such as a very relaxed dress code (sneakers, dungarees & tee-shirts (as long as I don’t have professional meetings with outside-the-company folks (“you don’t pay me to look pretty, you pay me to think.”) at the company that most employees don’t enjoy (& extended, unpaid vacations. I try hard to NOT to take advantage. So the company being “the assignee” (with all the rights to my inventions is standard operating procedure. I give that up for the high pay & other job perks & mangement understands that they can’t bully me like they can some other employees. It’s been that way for my whole career. It all comes down to “how replaceable are you?” Almost nobody is “totally irreplaceable”, but if you’re “extremely difficult, or costly, to replace”, (by being really talented) you can basically (within reason), write your own rules. HR wil tell you, “no, you can’t, because they we’d have to do that for everyone,, but I learned early about true leverage. You tell them, “nope, I’m doing it (eg., taking 3 months unpaid vacation for a climbing or “decompression” trip) and they _ALWAYS_ fold & agree to it. One of the main perks to getting a good education & being a productive employee: you can basically write your own rules. (Again ... within reason, you push things too far & it can cost you your job, but if you can demonstrate high productivity, there are always other jobs out there).

I understand that it is/was big in Japan, and I believe you're right that they "invented" it. I do remember interviewing around Y2K at a California IT recruiting agency, and watched for a while at their antics. A memorable moment came when one of the reps clinched a new prospect. She did a meerkat from her cubicle; the floor manager walked over and rang a brass bell, this set all the others to meerkating as they cheered and clapped.

My brother ran an oilfield services company that was bought by some New Yorkers. Instead of letting him do his thing they micromanaged and eventually fired him. I remember being a healthy looking 23 year old. I had just rolled my ankle and was on my way to the doctor. It hurt so bad but it was bearable enough to walk.
I didn't have anyone to take me to the doctor and had no money for a taxi, so I was on a train and sitting in a handicap seat. Which was fully justified if anyone had simply asked.
Along comes these two elderly people with a girl who was in her twenties, maybe. She looked at me and said to the elderly people, "Oh, you can sit here!" And points at me. I looked at her as though she was a fucking idiot. Then I very carefully started to stand up, just because I really wanted the two people who did nothing wrong to have a seat. I then hobbled over to the side of the train, supporting myself with a handrail.
The older lady said "oh, no, he's hurt...we should let him have the seat" and I replied to her "No, it's perfectly fine," then I looked at the younger one and said, "I understand that I look perfectly healthy but I've just had a bad ankle injury and I'm on the way to the doctor. But it's only a few stops away, I'm sure I'll be able to make it."
Another person who saw the whole thing obviously got up and let me sit down....but I just had to make that girl feel stupid for assuming I'm healthy just because I was young.
The lesson here is that you should ASK people to get up, if they can, never just order them to. You don't know why people are doing what they're doing, even if you think you do.
