The growling in Epica’s music is done by Mark Jansen (co-founder, guitarist and main composer) and it has a function. It’s like another instrument that colors the song and gives contrast to Simone’s angelic voice. Also, Epica’s lyrics are meaningful and many times bring different perspectives as part of the theme of the song. The growling character is never a dumb evil but always supports the massage of the song (which is usually empowering, including in this song), as an uninhibited and rough character while Simone represents the more staid character. BTW - the choir has also a distinguished role - usually represents the common sense or wider perspective vs. Simone’s and Mark’s personal perspective.
I think I'm getting used to that kind of growling with European metal bands. It's cool!
I just dont like that low deep voice growling. I like screaming and passion but to me that type of growling still feels like a gimmick. Its all good though :D I did still love the performance despite that.
It is about drug addiction and the growling is the voice of the drugs. If you've known someone who has struggled and listen to this song with the lyrics you will cry.
Great reaction - I enjoy seeing someone being as moved and amazed by a performance. Simone Simons is a very good friend of Floor. She and Floor have a couple of duets during this concert (and many other) - listen to them performing "Sancta Terra" and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa". You might be blown away

As you already have understood: there's something in the Dutch water 😉. (Epica, Floor, Anneke van Giersbergen, Within Temptation, Delain, Glennis Grace, OG3NE, Davina Michelle, Emma Heesters etc. etc.).About the "boys", try : Every year there’s a 12 day during concert in the Ahoy concerthall in Rotterdam that’s called “Vrienden van Amstel Live” (Friends of Amstel Live (Amstel = beer brand)), where the top of Dutch artists entertain 160.000 people. My “request” is: please react to a 16 minutes performance of 2 of the TOP-bands from the Netherlands who played together, singing well known covers. These bands are Di-Rect and Kensington. I really like Epica, but.. The only thing I don't like is Mark's growling. Not only in this song, but in every single one they made. Anyway, I won't stop listening to them, because they are a very good musicians. 👍

I discovered a North American indigenous band called The Jerry Cans recently and their female vocalists do traditional throat vocalisations. Can be strange to get into at first but I like that it's part of their culture and you get used to it. I realise it's not to everyones taste though, which is fine! 😊
Mark's growls is what separates them from other sympho metal bands
@@szekesfehervar2230 I can't agree. Sirenia, Leaves Eyes etc. - these bands are using "clean" female voices and male's growls. When I was diving in symphonic metal, there were so many different bands with the same structure. Unfortunately I don't remebmer all of them.
That's a bit like saying you love sweet and spicy food, but don't like the spicy. The contrast between Simone and Mark and the band and the orchestra is what makes Epica. Without that contrast they'd be nowhere near as epic. I understand not liking growls. I once felt the same 15 or 20 years ago. But I couldn't imagine not listening to bands with harsh vocals now. Most of my favorite bands (including Epica) use harsh vocals.
