Louie Austin was my great-great Uncle and truly was one the few "Jack of All Trades" in his day. I was born in '61 and grew up around him first at Bagby and then at the Rolf ranch outside Groveland, I saw pictures from when he worked at Schilling's Ranch and went with him once to a get-together there once in the 60's. Cowboy, Lumberjack, Hunter, Goldpanner and Packer, he was quite the man. There is mention of him in the Museum up there. I remember hearing the name Alvis Brown as well. Why no mention of the Miwoks up there? I learned some around Uncle and my Grandmother, Mabel Evans later Riddle.
What a great walk back through time and learning some more about our ranching and packing
history in California.
