    my grandpa is a HUGE gardener and he told me once that if you want your garden to be as good as it can be, making a compost box with worms, dirt, and things like peels and leftover compostable scraps makes the BEST soil and makes plants grow like crazy. Love the garden Desi!!

      Julie Crosby by chance... do you know how?

    • @CAlferez
      @CAlferez 6 лет назад +14

      If you get a compost bin put it in one corner of your garden and add your scraps as they come. Sometimes you will need to buy accelerator to help break it down and add it between layers, especially as it gets full. You may also have to stir it up sometimes to break it apart as it degrades. to get worms, you can just pick them up when you see them in your garden and add them to your bin. Usually the bins have a spot at the bottom where you can take out the finished compost and add it to your garden. Hope this helps.

    • @jeseniaportillo1126
      @jeseniaportillo1126 6 лет назад +11

      Julie Crosby yes!!! My parents do this! They have a beautiful garden filled with so many veggies every year and that’s their secret! They add all the things you mentioned and in the autumn they add the leaves that fall off the trees so that next spring/summer it’s all ready! The leaves make a huge difference, Desi may not be able to do that because seasons in Cali are so different than NJ but others may appreciate the tip 😊❤️

      There's something very satisfying about using all those kitchen scraps for the compost. Some Starbucks stores also bag up their used coffee grounds and give them away. Great for replenishing soil.

    This video made me so happy. My entire life, my grandparents have gardened, and I grew up helping them. Some of my fondest memories involve going outside every morning and picking berries, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Now, my grandmother has cancer, so our time is taken up caring for her and our gardening is slacking, so watching this video has reminded me how much I miss it and how much it meant to me.

  • @tara7261
    @tara7261 6 лет назад +3

    Honestly I don’t think a video has ever made me happier. I started gardening for the first time ever this summer. Since becoming Wiccan I just have such a grander appreciation for nature and wanted to give gardening a try and I agree that every day when something new sprouts it’s the most exciting feeling. I’ve only got 5 little pots on my balcony, so your garden is my dream.
    PS, as a dog groomer in training, I love the little booties on the black dog!!

    I really enjoyed this video as I feel so calm and connected with plants and my garden as well and I really enjoyed seeing that side of you here.❤️ Your zucchini and cucumbers really love heat and grow quickly in it but also require a good amount of moisture, therefore, would benefit from the soil being mulched. It could be as easy as grass/leaf clippings, cocoa hulls, or even pea gravel etc. It keeps the soil moist, weeds at bay and can put organic matter back into the soil. Also be warned that some cultivars of oregano if not potted can spread rapidly in some climates. The greek oregano I usually plant in my zone 5 garden I do by burying it in a "submerged pot" within the garden so that the little runners cannot get over the lip of the pot otherwise it takes over everything. Hopes this helps a little. 🌱

    Fellow green thumber here 🤙🏽 I started a garden last year and became OBSESSED. So rewarding! I did it organic as well with no fertilizers. Baking soda and Epsom salt for tomatoes make them taste better and grow more! Also crushed egg shells around the base of plants keep slugs and other bugs away. Also animals hate Irish spring bar soap I cut bars up and either hung them on a string or placed them by my stuff to keep them out. Alot of work but al those tricks worked wonders for my garden! Trellis for cucumbers work wonders to save space and prevent it from getting eaten by bugs. Just wanted to share some hacks that worked for me!

    1. For the climbers around the poles- Sweet Peas or Morning Glories are super fast growers and both love the sun.
    2. For the Peach Tree thieves - it's ghetto, but mirrors work. If you put small mirrors everywhere on the tree, it'll scare the birds and squirrels away. We used cds lol (like I said, ghetto, but we had a full tree of peaches!)

      the soil looks dry because she said there are sprinklers underneath watering it so she doesnt really need to water it.

      Yes it’s way too dry. She needs to increase the water flow on the drip system (what she called underground sprinklers).

    I am a city girl and when I moved to the south I started a garden. A great pesticide is banana peels, bury them around the plants that are being attacked and also plant peppermint to keep bugs away, coffee grounds in the soil as well. You have a beautiful garden.

    I completely agree with what you were saying Desi! I live in a condo so we don’t have much space but I just started an herb and succulent garden with my mom and every morning I always go outside to look at the growth and it’s so relaxing. I’d definitely suggest growing some basil, Yerba buena, and succulents!

    I love this video! My boyfriend and I have a little porch that we covered in all types of plants! You could maybe put a patio umbrella in/over the other planter box that is in the sun. Also, I learned the hard way not to water plants in the intense heat of the afternoon, you can actually burn/boil the roots! Best to wait until evening or even nighttime. ❤️❤️
