    For anyone wondering how to change the service reminder miles, hold the SET button while turning the ignition on, it will let you change the language, 12/24hr, and adjust the reminder mikes in 500mi increments. Lucky for me the previous owner keep the owners manual in good shape.

    Well Dan I wanna thank you for this inspirational video. See, back in 2017 I sold my 04 Harley Ultra Classic and bought for my son what I thought was the perfect “first car”, a 94 Grand Cherokee Laredo. It needed a few things and I figured it would be a fun father/son project. After doing some work I made the major mistake of actually driving it....and fell in love. I gave my 16yo son for his first car my 2016 Kia Soul and took that 20 something year old rust bucket dripping with character (and about everything else).
    Now I say inspirational because when we bought it the VIC was cutting out. I swapped it for the basic one and tossed it in a parts box thinking that’s the end of it, be not worth it to fix. After seeing how you did it and how simple it was I pulled it from that box and in about 30mins I had a fully functional VIC again!!
    Again, my thanks.

My ZJ is a 93 grand wagoneer (overpriced ZJ with woodgrain vinyl) and it is starting to chuck parts like its possessed. Good video of the typical issues with those VICs. However, they also have other issues that aren't so easy to fix. The heart of the system is making ~12 volts into ~40 plus volts. And that is accomplish by using an MC33060A 14 pin DIP chip as the PWM circuit to do the switching action. And the output from that chip feeds a power MOSFET to jump up the voltage across a transformer for the florescent display. The problem with so many VICs are that chip and/or the power MOSFET are usually blown. And I mean blown into pieces. Since The power MOSFET part number isn't listed on the actual part, (only their internal part number of the company is), it is merely a guess that that part is part number IRFZ46N. I have two of those VICs rebuilding them presently. So we will see if those parts fixes them. They are seriously finicky for sure.
    Update: Yes the MOSFET did fix my unit and that is the problem with both of my VICs.

    Awesome video, thank you for taking the time to tackle that project. Not as bad as I figured it would be, and a few pretty cheap parts to get it operating properly.
    I bet that I'd have a rear hatch open issue on my 98 ZJ though since the switch that senses the latch being closed was bad and would set off the dang alarm randomly in the middle of the night I had to disconnect that switch, guess I could just loop a wire through the connector and trick it so not too bad to get done.
    Thanks again for the awesome video.

I have a sensitive rear flip glass latch. I mitigated the alarm issue and the dome lights randomly going off while driving by welding an extra tab onto the latch. sometimes its still happens when i hit a large bump or pothole. now I'm not sure if its my glass or my hatch latch. either way all the other problems of the VIC were solved by re flowing the solder joints and I'm glad I did the conversion. @@ProjectDanH Thank you for the awesome well planned out video, extremely easy to follow, I took notes so I can do that swap too. I like the oil change reminder and some of the other things that the VIC does that the GDM doesn't do, or at least mine doesn't I thought it was supposed to show the doors and hatch being opened like the VIC but I guess it doesn't, and some of the bulbs in my GDM are burned out too found out after watching your video that the rear wheels should light up when in 2WD as well...mine don't light up regardless of what position the transfer case is in so figured I may as well do the GDM to VIC swap while I'm in there and I'll do like you and save the GDM just in case.
      If I recall the switch issue with my rear hatch was the flipper glass switch, that's disconnected now and haven't had any issues. When the flipper glass is opened the interior lights don't turn on now but who cares, least of my worries, rather not be woke up to the dang alarm going off at 2am, and interior lights flickering on and off while driving....I initially thought it was one of the door switches but nope that was too simple of a fix LOL.

      That recall was due to the full time 4WD models, running a temporary spare on a full time 4WD would cause damage to the transfer case and differential would possibly overheat...so the recall gave those with the full time 4WD model a full size spare which a 4x4 should have in the first place LOL. Sec trac or quadra trac
    Would they still be interchangeable?

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 лет назад +2

      Yes, it'll work regardless of which 4x4 system you have, it just lights up all 4 wheels in the display for full time 4WD, and says full time on the display, and low range says Lo. Nothing to change in the wiring or anything it just displays what was displayed in the GDM just in a different manner.
      Now if you swap transfer cases there's plugs behind the GDM or VIC that you swap that tells the display which transfer case you have and changes the options that will light up.

      @wildbill23c 5 лет назад +2

      @@michaelb2226 Its all in a couple of plugs behind the display that are not connected to the display, white and black plugs depending on which t-case is installed.
      So with selec-trac it'll light up the back 2 wheels in 2WD, full time 4WD lighs up back 2 wheels and front 2 wheels and says full time on the display, part time 4WD and low range lights up the front 2 wheels and back 2 wheels and says Part Time on the display as there aren't enough wires in the transfer case selector sensor to be able to distinguish part time high range and low range, so it just lights up part time for both high and low.
      Quadra-Trac lights up all 4 wheels all the time, and in low range it says LO on the display.
      Command-Trac lights up back 2 wheels in 2WD all 4 wheels in 4WD part time, and all 4 wheels in low and shows Part time in 4hi and LO in low range.

My brakes work better than ever before because come to find out someone had installed them upside down and I never even realized it lol. apparently, you can put these things on the wrong side. Both sides are interchangeable. Never had decent brakes until now. But now my abs light is on and I don't know why. I have changed both wheel sensors, abs module, abs pump. Just about everything. Bled it over 10x. and can't find anything wrong. No scan tool seems to be able to get abs codes from the 96 year. I've been seeing around the internet that you cannot access the abs from the obd2 port. that there is some dbr 2 tool that you connect to a couple plugs behind the cigarette lighter or something to pull abs codes. I've spent so much money on this issue. my nearest stealership is a good 30 to 40mins away and it's not registered yet because of this abs light. So driving there is not an option.

      hmmm. interesting. I find that most ABS errors come from a bad sensor or cable. You may want to replace all the sensors and cables and then trace all wires that go from the cables to the ABS module. It could be something as simple as a bad ground. The ABS system does not communicate with the OBD2 so no programming is necessary. The ABS system does not necessarily depend on your brake lines either. Make sure you have enough fluid in the system and make sure your bleeder valves are on the top of the caliper. as long as your brakes work well you don't need ABS. If the ABS light is bothering you then you could just pull the ABS fuse out of the fuse box and boom or your problems will disappear! It should still be able to get it inspected without ABS or with the ABS light on

      @@ProjectDanH Thanks a lot man, yea I'm in the process of replacing all the sensors. I've got 2 done already. I'm going to have to check up on the grounds. The abs system was working just fine just before I changed the caliper so I know it has to be something with the sensor. Yes, my bleeder valves was installed backward that's why I had to switch them around. That's when the light came on. And yes I didn't know it could pass inspection with the light on so thanks for that. I guess I will just get it done and drive it that way because no I don't care about the light at all. Now that I switched the calipers so that the bleeders are on top the brakes work better than they ever have since I've owned it. So I really appreciate the help!

    I was able to find the sensor connectors but I can't find both the connectors for the VIC on my jeep. It's a 1994 grand cherokee laredo and the GDM has only 1 of the connectors. Where would the second connector be?

      Sometimes they're folded back and taped high up in the harness.. sometimes they didn't complete the harness. A couple guys with 93 and 94s said they had to run their own wires. 😯

    Since this swap can be done in the ZJ, it makes me wonder if a person could swap the manual climate controls for the automatic climate controls?

    • @ProjectDanH

      Nope! I tried. You would have to change your whole vehicle over from the vacuum system to an electric system. Too much work for virtually no gain. Lol
