Aston Martin V8 Vantage 6.3 Liter v. Virage 6.3 Liter

  • Now while everybody agrees today how cool those V8s have been, people don’t have such an unanimously high opinion of the Virage. As a matter of fact, the Virage is a bit of a black sheep in the Aston Martin history. The design broke with certain typical design clues and it seems many customers as well as enthusiasts were and still are upset about it. But I am not in that camp, not at all! While the sharp-edged angular shapes were a serious departure from the V8, with its definitely by now 22-year old, aging looks, they were in keeping with the overall Aston Martin design direction at the time, defined by the Lagonda Wedge, V8 Vantage Zagato and even the (recently fully restored) Bulldog prototype. It was the time of hard edges in the automotive industry. Besides the Lagonda Wedge, there was the Ferrari 400i and the Dino 308, the DeLorean, the Maserati Biturbo, the Lotus Esprit, the Lancia Delta Integrale and Beta Mont Carlo, just to name a few…
Nevertheless, the Virage was still a muscle car at heart, despite being now even more understated. Apparently too much understated for many - but again; not for me. I really do appreciate the look, always have. And underneath it is still an old-school GT - and I appreciate that as well.
Here on the East Coast, Tom is THE connection to have, if you long for any of those Astons of the 80s and/or early 90s. We met a dozen years ago in England, through our mutual passion for Vantages, and half a dozen years ago Tom sold me a very nice Virage here in the States that was extremely handsome and never failed me.
So, when I saw these two 6.3 liter cars together under his roof, I understandably became very excited and immediately decide that this rare coincidence had to be immortalize for posterity in the form of a film, while, at the same time, it would give me the chance to finally drive the divine “6.3”.
And for me as a filmmaker, the icing on the cake was that both cars not only featured black engines (the trademark of the 6.3 liter V8s) but also black paint on the outside and black leather on the inside (just like the car in that fateful night in Essen). The ideal badass pair of Astons - for me, anyway. ”His and His!”

The older Vantage is, for me the perfect gentlemans horseless carriage. A sledgehammer in a velvet glove.

For me the 70’s car wins on looks.

Two of my favourite Aston Martins. If I could have only one though, it’d be the ‘77. However I’d be more than happy with “just” the 5.3! British muscle cars at their best 😎

I've watched this film many many times on Instagram and Vimeo, and every time I am drooling 🤤 The 6.3 Virage made me fall in love with Aston Martin in 92, I was 16, and it never stopped. The Vantage is perhaps even more beautiful, and foremost the sound is absolutely INCREDIBLE ! What a chance to meet those two and to drive them, I'm jealous. Just driving one of them would make me happy for the rest of my life. 😍

Aston Martin is Royalty and seriously Expensive to Buy and Run so people settle for AMGs and 911s which are quicker than the Astons but lack the Aura an Aston brings😂

I would say no to 10 Virage’s, to have just one Vantage.
Ever since the Car magazine article on 1984, where they compared a gorgeous Vantage with the Countach, Boxer and 911 Turbo, I have been hooked.

Me too. If I'm honest, that propelled me to buy my two V8's. I loved that magazine. Cropley, Mel, Georg, LJK et al. My first was an '86 Fuel Injection, then an 88 X pack, called "Arnold", named by my mother in law, after Schwarzenegger! Reality was they were glorious, sounded great, but only sound investments if you kept them in garage and drove a few miles per annum.

I LOVE both, I cannot say one more than the other. They are both ungodly sexy. I didn't know the 6.3 virage even existed till now. Tyvm for sharing. If forced lol to have only 1 it WB the Vantage but I can't say I like it more. They are both 11 out of 10.

That is incredible. I grew up in Essen, right next to Düsseldorf and seeing a black Vantage at night (there can't be that many in that neighborhood) is exactly what ignited my passion for these cars to the point that I later owned one. I am writing about and describing this very situation in the article that was published with this film originally here: collectorscarworld.com/aston-martin-vantage-virage/ Have a read through it. And as I am thinking back now, I do remember that I lost sight of the car when it took the turn onto the highway that leads to Düsseldorf. Just amazing.

I loved the 69' Mustang for as long as I can remember. However when I first seen the 77' Vantage it was like a revelation. It's not only the year i was born but, to my eyes, it looks like a 69' Mustang was tailored just for me. It's the right size, subdued in all the right places with a fantastic interior. 😍

2 years and 6 drives later

Always loved the Virage to be honest. That was my fav aston when I was a kid. Loved the DB7 as well but the Virage is really 80s. Great shots, really enjoyed watching these two head to head, and also alone rolling. Great story telling and editing. Thanks for providing us this content. Love British sports cars.

    2台のうちどちらか選べと云われたら77年式V8やね。
