Psychedlics is a form of pharmakia; Greek word φαρμακεία, transliterated pharmakeia, which means 'sorcery' and is prohibited in the bible. The apostle Paul lists sorcery as one of many sinful practices that mark the lives of unbelievers: “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife . . . and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21). Interestingly, the New Testament Greek word translated “sorcery” is pharmakeia, which is the source of our English word pharmacy. In Paul’s day, the word primarily meant “dealing in poison” or “drug use” and was applied to divination and spell-casting because sorcerers often used drugs along with their incantations and amulets to conjure occult power.
Only 2 minutes in and let me tell you: you aren’t wrong. I’ve done mushrooms many times and on more than one of those occasions I’ve had experiences that seem to confirm the claims of some of the most ancient and revered wisdom traditions of the world. My most recent trip was by far the most mindblowing. It was only a few weeks ago, with my brother-in-law, over the Christmas break. I won’t get into all the details... but I had a vision that changed me in an instant. I closed my eyes... and saw extremely vividly... a pulsating wall of puzzle pieces. The wall quickly faded and turned into something else... suddenly, I saw a cosmic pyramid... surrounded by a chain link of more puzzle pieces... it absolutely shattered me to see... my mouth went fully agape with no control and I had to hold my head in my hands as I witnessed this... entity in my mind. It seemed like... both the most ancient thing in the world, and the most modern thing in the word... all at once. All I could do was cover my eyes and shrink before it... before its grandness... its power... the absolute depth of its mystery... it was truly terrifying in the moment. When I opened my eyes... my sister and brother-in-law were calling me, trying to get me to come outside with them... but I couldn’t... I couldn’t budge from that chair... the vision completely shattered me in that moment. I felt like I’d gone completely mad, just for having witnessed it... I also saw swirling triskels and swirling cube distortions everywhere... both ancient symbols... the latter being akin to the swastika, which the bastard Nazis basically ruined as a perennial symbol... It was like everything was just a swirl of ever-manifesting universal energy... the animals I was surrounded by even gathered around me and lay in the shape of a swirl... it was like my energy was pumped up to maximum and the animals naturally joined in my own swirling energy... so strange. As I was coming down, I couldn’t stop ranting about circles... as though somehow they were at the very base of our manifesting existence in some way... I felt as though I was at the very centre or a never ending, manifesting energy... like all things are just crystallized manifestations of this universal, swirling energy... My brother-in-law said he saw eyes everywhere... and the next day when doing some research... he identified it as the Eye of Horus. Also an Egyptian symbol... So we both had ancient Egyptian symbols come into our minds... and neither of us were interested in Egypt before. Now, were both fascinated by it, and the mysteries it holds. Our minds run far deeper than most people realize.. there are keys we can use to unlock the doors to those depths... to connect ourselves to ancient humans who were seeing the same things... and ultimately, to connect us to eternity itself... we are all linked to eternity. We just dont realize it in our day to day. Anyway... could hardly fully explain it all... but it was absolutely magnificent. God bless you brother and keep up the great work!
@@Miguel-q2c1b that's... exactly the right question. what ARE we to do about it? once we've connected with these underlying realities and seen glimpses of the great mysteries... what then? I can't say I have the exact answer... first of all, never stop seeking... always be a student of the world and never give up on the quest for knowledge and understanding. Second... use the understandings to wade out into the wider world and contribute to the building of a better future. I learned recently that many of the great cities of the world, including Washington DC, were partially built by Freemasons... people who very much connected with the underlying mysteries found through psychedelics and the quest for understanding, especially regarding Egypt and the mystery of lost Atlantis. These people didn't become hippie bums who sat around talking shit. They went out and BUILT the world. Because that's one of the key insights about the Pyramids... they represent, if anything, the truly GREAT potentialities of the human being and the human mind. Science itself, engineering, etc... all these things are just more testaments to the greatness of our species that most people take for granted in every day life. So... what do we do? Understand yourself and the gifts you have to offer to the world... and help steer us in the right direction... help guide us into the truly good and great future that is our birthright as human beings on this wonderful planet. Always have an eye and a heart for the magic that is present in everyday life... and help maintain it. Be a keeper of the sacred fire... tend to it... ensure it doesn't die on your watch. I wish this could have been face 2 face. I also wish i would have watched this episode when it first premiered. Brian, other than Graham and Randal, is my favorite guest of any podcast. His book detailing his intellectual pursuit, to me, is the most interesting subject there is.
I believe when you chase some sort of objective and tell yourself “I’ll be happy once I get this or once I have this or do this” you’ll find that once you get that thing you’re no different than before. I believe the path to “happiness” is within, not some external point to run to, so look within and find a perspective that allows you to be “happy” in the present. And I think “happiness” is maximized when you’re lost in the moment and not thinking of something else while you’re doing whatever it is that is bringing you “happiness”. I find meditation helps practice being present and being in your body more than your mind. I also find that while meditating the mind is put at ease, making it easier to find a healthy perspective on things. The future never happens so choose to enjoy things the way they currently are. Piss on me & beat me.. The media tries to convince citizens on both sides of the political spectrum that the other side is insane. When you assume that everyone on the other side agrees with the lunatics on their side then you enter every conversation at a disadvantage. The polarization in this country will be solved when we one by one start being open to conversation and disagreements without assuming the opposition is supporting lunatics. I can ride my bike with no handlebars.

I used to buy into the psychedelic mystery school theory until I started reading about alchemy in the ancient world. Alchemy was illegal in most cultures of the West, but was still practiced and considered a sacred and mystic knowledge. As such folks like Pythagoras up to the medieval mystics had to practice alchemy in secret. Many secret societies today are born out of the secret alchemical cults and alchemy is perhaps just as influential today as it was a thousand years ago. And I spent about seven years tripping my balls off. I've tried everything from the 2c family to San pedro (which was by far the most mystical experience I've ever had), made and smoked oodles of demetri, enough lsd and lysergic acids to sink a battleship. It was great and I learned a lot, but I think the alchemical texts and history make it pretty clear that it was being practiced and learned in secret sects. And the bible likewise is PACKED full of alchemical metaphors and symbolism. So I agree with his ideas but when you've done enough psychedelics you realize that they are VERY subjective, and I don't know how you would build a system that can easily transmit into hard knowledge. I would bet an alchemical knowledge was at the heart of these schools but I think using egotized beer would be the perfect alchemical transformative sacrament to accompany this mystic alchemical knowledge, you know? Like I've listened to quite a bit of this guy's stuff and I think if he actually went out and ate some fungi he would realize how difficult it would be to formulate a definitive system of knowledge, and I think he's looking at this story far too simplified. Also it's interesting that he was working with the Vatican on this stuff when so too was Gordon Wasson. I believe Wasson was actually bankrolled by the Vatican for much of his ethnobotanical research. As well as the Vatican's good friend JP Morgan. Weird stuff.
Research on psychedelics has a bright future because there's a lot more information to gather on the science and history of psychedelics. Imagine what could already be known had there been less stigma surrounding psychedelics.
It was called resurrection. The Egyptians used the blue lotus. Jesus was resurrected before he was crucified. The Lazarus story has some of the details.
When Brian speaks of what the Mysteries were that were explored in the various mystery cults, I was surprised that he only mentioned the death and rebirth trope. Yes, that was no doubt a significant aspect of the experience, but I suspect they were far more in depth than that. If you read Thomas Taylor's translation (1891) that speak of the Eleusinian mysteries (at least, what there is that is known) the dramas may have attempted to convey the spiritual belief that the human soul (identified as Persephone) was believed to have descended from the realm of the God and light, down through the celestial spheres, entering into the realm of dark matter (symbolized as water or a mire) and that is supposed to represent our human condition. The only way to be assured of a path back to the realm of light and God was through the philosophy of the truth, that the human soul is potentially immortal, and it was through the revelations at Elusis or through Dionysus that provided that pathway. No doubt those so steeped in that philosophy, having fasted for 9 days, and who then watched the ceremony and heard those things said, watched those things shown and did what was asked of them under the influence of a psychoactive sacrament would have a profound experience. Anyone who has read much about psychedelics know that the two most important elements of a good experience are Set and Setting. Set being what is in the mind and setting being where you are and who you are with. For a ceremonial experience it is easy to control the environment, but setting up what is in their mind must be much more difficult. This may be why the initiate had to come back a year later after having gone through the first stage of the initiation. They wanted the participant to have more time to think more deeply on the elements of the philosophy imbedded in their mythos before partaking of the Kykeon.
As someone who's thoroughly initiated into the psychedelic experience, I can say this is spot on, the experience will change you, you will gain insight unique to the experience. Brilliant talk
Interesting question about Aurelius but I can't imagine he & his clan being afraid of much back then. Not too far fetched to see them load up on psychedelics. ✌️
A guy that had an NDE confirms exactly what Brian is saying and I don’t think he’s aware at all of Brian’s work. He died and went to the other side and said there are many massive buildings that are of Greek and Roman style. He said the reason the Greeks and Romans came up with this style is they “remembered it” from the other side. He said all ideas come from the other side! Sounds a lot like Platos forms and Brian’s thesis does it not? If you want to see the vid it’s on Jeff Maras podcast from April 29 at the 43:00 mark

It's difficult to believe Brian could have developed such an interest in this subject without having some personal experience. But there's still a sort of taboo reaction that exists, in that if you admit influence from personal experiences then somehow you've lost your rational edge due to the influences of the drug. Past greats like William James or John Lilly had no issue with finding out for themselves.
Actually he had a mystical experience when he was younger. He doesn’t talk about it much, but it was an NDE and had a direct experience with the infinite unconditional Love that is God✨ Once you’ve had that then surely you know how toxic judgment is, for it always stands in the way of compassion.

Drugs are a waste of time. Ask any Zen master. " Alcohol is like a porcupine down a rathole: Easy to get in - not so easy to get out." - Seung Sahn Alcohol is just another drug.
Drugs are not the answer to the question and can be a hindrance, but can also be an important tool to breaking out of the inherited shallow mindset of today's modern way of life. Firstly- I 💯 assure you prolonged use of psychedelics will permanently mess your head up, even if just a little. Tbh a single God really blows on the proto-psychology field, it's much more compelling to have a gamut of flawed super-entitities such as the Greek Gods, than a perfect non relatable being as the backbone of your society. Dionysus!
Do some homework and you’ll find the gods were for the masses, those that participated in the mysteries didn’t hold such beliefs. Their experience with divinity was direct, and all mystical experiences elicit the experience of One God, and that everything is a manifestation of God 💖

Great interview, thank you!
I just dropped some of my IRA into Mindmed stock in hopes of assisting with the meaning crisis. I'm not sure if this is the best company to support though, so if your guest has a better recommendation, I'd be glad to hear it.
The reason it was kept secret is because the actual vision part is utterly indescribable
I don’t know about the documentary project but your best bet might just be to team up with Hamilton Morris for a special episode on eleusis.
Imagine a world where all politicians were encouraged to take psychedelics before forging governmental policy? Better than anything even John Lennon could conceive I'd wager.
When I read John's Revelation (and even more so in his Apocryphon) I think to myself, now this sounds like a guy who's been stung by too many scorpions.

The Greeks and Romans did NOT get the meaning of life wrong!
Except for Slavery, complete control over women and children, pederasty etc etc
@@claudiaxander they were patriarchal and slaughtered women
@@claudiaxander Slavery literally flourished under the roman catholic church that blessed the new world colonisation, pederasty rape scandals have been revealed about the roman catholic church as well, there is no religion more misogynistic than christianity/islam. Christianity demonized the human body and its beauty, sex, freedom of opinion and questioning of the establishment.
You need to study more. The fact you are expressing your opinion in this comment section of youtube is essentially the product of grecoroman principles, not the product of a dogmatic religion that brought the know world to one millenium of dark ages.
@@ariellekaplan707 There is no establishment ( religious or otherwise) that is more patriarchal and misogynistic than abrahamic religions. Christianity literally demonized the female body and labeled females as sinful from birth. Hypatia ? There were female gods ( in the same number as male ) in the pagan religion, there were priestesses and hierophants just like their male counterparts. As soon as abrahamic religion dominated woman became the bearer of the primal sin, the reason for the human expulsion from garden of eden.
It took 2 millenia for the christian church to allow women to become priests and you are talking about patriarchy....? Even the word patriarchy is dominant in the christian dogma.

Great video. Really interesting. totally deserves more views if you ask me
My favorite LGBT figure in history, Hadrian, helped revive Eleusis. Good on him!
“My virginity was... and remains intact”
Yea, story of my life bro
It's difficult to believe Brian could have developed such an interest in this subject without having some personal experience. But there's still a sort of taboo reaction that exists, in that if you admit influence from personal experiences then somehow you've lost your rational edge due to the influences of the drug. Past greats like William James or John Lilly had no issue with finding out for themselves.
I can't trust someone who hadn't had mystical experience fully
Like WC Fields “I never trust a man who doesn’t drink !”
Actually he had a mystical experience when he was younger. He doesn’t talk about it much, but it was an NDE and had a direct experience with the infinite unconditional Love that is God✨
Once you’ve had that then surely you know how toxic judgment is, for it always stands in the way of compassion.
Eleusinian Mysteries!
It seems like a solved problem to me...
There are 3 kinds of people. Those that are doing drugs, those that want to do drugs and don't know where to ask, and those who refuse to try and live a stunted boring life.
I’m the second 🤫😔
Even Moderation should be taken in Moderation !
Just as is important as doing drugs, is what and how we do them.
What experiences with ‘drugs’ caused you to hold the beliefs posed in your statement?

How do you write a book about something with only half the knowledge?
What did "murder" mean in ancient Greece?
Of course they did . Art, science- it’s all evolving thanks to entheogens. Our very soul is green, that’s what mushrooms showed me. The symbols of their use are all over the ancient art ! We’re benefiting from their help and denying that at the same time, as a culture- no wonder we’re so confused and depressed .
Catching up to do? How much have we missed for the last 2000 years?

Drugs are a waste of time. Ask any Zen master.
" Alcohol is like a porcupine down a rathole: Easy to get in - not so easy to get out."
- Seung Sahn
Alcohol is just another drug.
Depends really what you put into the “drug” category , just because the government has banned something, doesn’t always mean it’s right
Drugs are not the answer to the question and can be a hindrance, but can also be an important tool to breaking out of the inherited shallow mindset of today's modern way of life. They absolutely helped me to see through a lot of BS, as well as led me to exploring many philosophies , but I have also experienced drawbacks too. But, having said that making drugs contraband is absurd.
@@FunkMaster_J yeah from CBD for bone health, to micro dosing ketamine for PTSD/bipolar disease, to DMT enhancing empathy in humans. There’s a lot of banned drugs that can have a positive effect on humans , just depends on the situation
I see that you place THE Zen Masters at the top of the spiritual/truth hierarchy.
Today's BBC........brewery 3+k yrs old found inside the pyramids?
Firstly- I 💯 assure you prolonged use of psychedelics will permanently mess your head up, even if just a little. Second, I get you can write a book about them, and the connection to religion- but wouldn’t one want to maybe experience the physical and esoteric sensations that come along with it, so you’d have an understanding. It’s kind of a big deal experience.... but also, yeah, don’t do them either. It’ll skew your view 😂
Do you speak from experience ?
Construct...?!
If you're looking for a religious experience, take the Hero's Journey on psilocybin mushrooms. You will most likely meet God himself.
I also recommend the Power and the Glory (DMT and 5-MeO-DMT) . And if you're looking for an extremely inward journey, walk the path of ayahuasca.
LSD is also very reliable in potentiating a mystical experience💖
until you've been there... you just don't know.
this is why you are supposedly considered 'crazy' after seven (?) doses of LSD. or something like that.

The ancient Greeks used psychedelics to find the Gods, plural.

Recipe for Peace Cake:
Take one aesthetically enhanced yet symbolically neutral cauldron.
Fill with a variety of human cultures.
Drizzle with LSD; strobing thoroughly.
Crack in large egos and beat relentlessly till the id is unified.
Sweat the mix down over a high trance making sure not to fry.
Illuminate senses to taste.
Pour off the scum and related dogma.
Allow to stand and be cool.
Serve with empathy and compassion on a bed of science.
Peace Cake.
