The Day False 9 Lionel Messi Was Introduced To The World ► Messi Vs Real Madrid (2/5/2009)

- May 2, 2009. The Santiago Bernabéu stadium, Barcelona against Real Madrid. The scene was set for Pep Guardiola to unleash his secret weapon.
Ten minutes into the game, with the score at 0-0, Pep gave the nod Lionel to Messi and Samuel Eto'o. The two players had to swap positions. Eto'o, usually a centre-forward, moved to the right wing and Messi, a right winger, took up position in the centre of the field - but playing deeper, more like an attacking midfielder. Christoph Metzelder and Fabio Cannavaro, the Madrid centre-backs, were lost. They had no idea how to counteract the change.

@@mrt445 he created those best players
he litterly said in a interview that he dont care about beautiful play, he just wants to win
it so funny to see these old footage where commentators were surprised that messi scored 36 goals in a season, now if he scores 40 42, its an average season for him
like the old saying, "getting used to something is a terrifying thing".
It's funny to hear them saying that he's moving in off the wing.
Any less than 50 is a bad season for him.
The football of this era is more systematic than ever. It means if everyone do their respective jobs well, the strikers will net an unusually high amount of goals because that's their job. You may notice that it's no longer just Messi and Ronaldo who can net more than 40 goals per season.
aclock2 i think football is changing; players already became very fast , as ex; if in champions league you was down by 2 goals than it was hard to recover and thats regardless home or a way but in this days barca recover 4 goals difference (6-1) almost Juv recovered 3- 0 agenst RM . So i believe attack players became to fast and because of it the football will change and we will se slowly an extraordinary defenders will come and than the football will stay normal for other 30 years . I mean look the old days Pele time .... if you put Messi in Pele time , he could of score 5 goals per game (as they all reasonably slow) and now it will happen to this football
When Pique scores you know the game is over.
Agree, just like when he scored an own goal against Bayern.

1 thing I respect so much about messi is that he doesnt dive. He plays real football
Abuzar Ali yeah but did u see him acting as if his leg was broken in the last game when Ramos challenged him
Arbin Punk k when someone comes at u with 2 footed tackle with no intention of getting the ball but trying to hurt u. Are u gonna wait for him to get up and say “good tackle buddy” ? And ramos rarely ‘challenges’ for the ball when messi has it.
Messi has dived mainly in 2012
he was one of the most people that dived in 2014 world cup and i am a ronaldo fan but at least i admit that he dives
just love it VEVO they both cheat a real footballer is Milner! What a legend, an absolute work horse 🐎
I always laugh out loud when I see Ramos' desperate, failed attempt at stopping Messi's pass. Man, do I hate Sergio Ramos.
His most recent pathetic cheap shot on Salah may have destroyed Egypt's WC run...

The good old days when Barcelona were playing beautiful football, today just a memory of what it was.
I couldnt help but feel empty watching this year’s Champions League... just not as exciting as it used to be when teams like barca were not so criminally handicapped as they are now
2:44 Even after a collision, the first thing that Messi looked for was the ball. This is why I respect this guy so much; he seriously just wanted to play.
I'm seeing this after 5 years but the way in he always play and played is the same. I highly recommend to you see and translate from Spanish the video from Hernan casciari "Messi es un perro" where the author try to explain poetically Messi on this mood

Those passes, the movements, the touches all are just unimaginable. I am actually lucky to have seen that glorious team. It was the first full la liga season I watched ❤️
Barca were so generous to RM in this game - for every 1 goal they give them 3 goals !!
The passing, the pressing and the calmness...they don't make players like this anymore
The only clasico I’ve ever been to. It was amazing
AdrieAgent wow i bet it was unforgettable. I went to the miami clasico this pre season it was amazing messi scored in like 3 minutes
I was like 10 back then so I bought a Real-Madrid kit with Raul on it. Then I went into the stadium with my parents and we happened to be in between the Barcelona fans lol

This was way more entertaining than atleast 90% of match highlights of nowadays. Pure footballing genius and play
I _love_ *Xavi’s turn that set up Messi’s second goal.*
Set to x0.25 speed and pause every few frames to see this.
12:18 As soon as he sees *Dani Alves* pass the ball to *Messi,* he pulls away from *Van der Vaart.*
*At this point his body is facing the left of the field.* _He takes once quick glance over his left shoulder to see Van der Vaart approaching Messi._ He steps to move deeper up field with his body still facing the same way.
(He ultimately receives the pass from Messi near the penalty arc, but he doesn’t run in a straight line from his initial position. He runs a slightly curved path to move to a receiving angle before he moves deeper up field.)
Before the ball reaches Messi, _he now looks front and sees _*_Gago_*_ to his left and _*_Roberto Carlos_*_ at the back line._
12:19 Continuing to move towards the goal, _he looks over his left shoulder to see Messi._ *He’s positioned himself right in the center of the triangle of Van der Vaart, Gago, and Roberto Carlos as the ball reaches Messi.*
This enabled Messi to make the pass immediately after he receives the pass from Alves before Van der Vaart can press him.
Now ready to receive the ball Xavi takes a pivot step to *turn his body now to face the right of the field.* _He sees Messi release the pass to him._
With his body facing right, _he can see Messi running after releasing the ball, and also _*_Heinze_* who would cover the space Messi wants to exploit.
12:20 As Messi’s pass is approaching his right foot, _he then looks over his left shoulder to confirm Roberto Carlos is not approaching him,_ which means he can receive the ball facing toward the goal.
Messi’s pass is weighted perfectly and Xavi lets the ball run in front of him and *turns his body after the ball to face the goal.*
Because Xavi is coming towards him looking up, Roberto Carlos first stands square ready to go in either direction. Xavi runs with the ball a few steps not touching it but letting it come closer to Roberto Carlos to tease him.
12:21 As Gago rapidly closes in from behind almost jumping to double team, Xavi takes his first touch with the right inside, moving the ball the farthest he can reach in the next touch, in about a 90 degree angle away from Roberto Carlos.
With Gago trying to hold him from his left side, he heavily slants his body after the ball shielding it from the two defenders.
12:22 He makes his second touch, again with the inside right, in a sharp 180 turn, right leg fully extended and left arm also extended to fend off Gago.
_He looks up and confirms Messi moving to the space to receive the pass._ Roberto Carlos and Gago are behind him, having circled around him with the turn.
Heinze realizes Xavi turned and sees him about to pass to Messi whom he is the closest to, but his body is still moving the other way responding to Xavi’s first touch when Xavi releases a perfect pass to Messi.
12:23 It was too late for Heinze, he has to see the ball travel right in front of him to a free Messi, who scores his second goal.
Replay with a different camera angle starting at 13:01. Look at Xavi at 13:02 completely looking up and Robert Carlos almost jumping up to square his balance in anticipation.
_Great positioning and vision_ and *just three touches* - two for a turn and one for a pass - to create the time and space for Messi’s goal. Simply brilliant...
Bro That's too much detail.
Buts that's why we love football 👣
@@easymoneyonline7556 It was just my attempt to try to understand what is so great about Xavi, it might be too much but you’d have to forgive me...
That's great analysis. I am quite new to football. What can you suggest me to work on if I wanna improve my football analytical skills ?
@@d1rtyharry378 That’s really flattering, thank you very much. But I’m not really much of an analyst, and I’m not qualified to give you advice.
Just watch a lot of games, and I’m sure there are lots of analysis videos and players training videos out there so you can watch them.
There’s actually two sides to it: One is a sort of “micro” analysis of the detailed body movement’s of a player, like exactly where he/she controls the ball in what situation, etc., etc. The other is a sort of “macro” analysis, like formation matchups (just for example, 4-4-2 vs 3-5-2, etc. etc.)
Both are at play at the simultaneously by all the players from both sides, such a complex and beautiful game. Some people seem to be able to see both in one view, but I’m weak on the latter (strategic) aspect because I tend to focus on all the movements of my favorite player(s) in a game, on or off the ball.
Actually the best way to know the game I’d like to suggest it to play it. Me, I wasn’t even interested in football as a youth, I started playing in a fun-hobby group well in middle age. I’m a *terrible* player, but when you try to play and realize the things you can’t do, you start to get at least some understanding of what the great players are doing.
If full-scale football is too much, I suggest hobby futsal. It’s both very tactical and with lots of close-rage skills, so you can more easily enjoy the gist of football than soccer, IMO.
Barca players are just *so good* in close-range small-field plays, it’s so enjoyable to watch (maybe not so much now but the golden era of Iniesta/Xavi/Buskets/Messi and others). Barca women’s team is dominant now and delightful to watch too. Cheers!
@@halflanding1900 Thats beautiful. I do play soccer once a week in a 5v5 or 6v6 game. I have improved my game by a bit by watching these kind of videos and a few matches. Plan to improve on more.
Currently I'm following Pep's Manchester City and learning a lot about formations and how to create spaces and how to exploit one.
I do plan to go a bit deep and use my data analysis skills to analyse what's happening in the game. The kind of analysis you produced is sure gonna help me watching future football games and gather insights in the matches.
Thanks for writing me. Its quite helpful. Appreciate it!
Messi was sooo young yet sooo mature.... He is the best and xavi was also awesome that turn 🙌
This Barcelona team would beat any squad in the world.
Oskar Honing Defenitely Ine of the best teams ever
And Chelsea should have beat them that year.
Bob Barca won that’s what matters, you must be a Chelsea fan
Oskar Honing - of course they won, dubious as it was but sure I'll give you that. But then Chelsea also beat Barca in 2012 so would you say that Chelsea squad WOULD beat any team in history? no because we all know that there are some instances where the clearly stronger team loses. Whether they won or not is still besides the point, the point is that they faced a formidable Chelsea team that was just as strong if not stronger than that 09 Barca team so you claiming that they WOULD beat any team is unfounded.
Nightmare Beast - The irony in you using the term "duh" in a sentence that is easily top 3 dumbest responses on RUclips. I know he is talking about the 09 Barca team and I'm sure even he knows that I know he is. Mentioning the 2012 teams was just my attempt at using analogy to defeat his previous point about Barca's win as 'all that matters'. DUH! Did you not learn how to read and comprehend at junior school?
First game as a false 9 and it seemed like he has been playing that role his entire life..just perfection!❤️❤️❤️

*One day Pep saw in his office the space between the midfield and defence and how Messi could exploit it, he called him in and said “from now on this is your area”*
Really?
It actually is. Pep saw the space between the lines of RM and told Messi to exploit the area and confuse the RM defense. From that game onwards Messi became the false 9

for me messi is the goat, but he was just a wonderful dribbler, who will show extraordinary skills and will put alien goals on stage, but then came guardiola, he made messi, best passer, he gave messi the tactical knowledge, that vision, positioning,he boosted up the midfield of barcelona, he coached and moulded a team of academy boys, into galactico slayers. For me he is the GOAT, the way he carried on cruyff legacy, the way he established a culture, that even in crippling financial condition, has still made la liga, Barcelona's backyard, thank you pep, if you were not here, messi won't be good, and thank you sir cruyff for giving pep chance over mourinho, can't imagine barca playin park the bus, people remember the way barca played, not the trophies they won.

I’m the only one who thinks he was a better dribbler than nowadays?? ( still the best in the world )
yes thats not a surprise at all, considering his age atm. He had to change his style of play to keep up with the pressure of playing 40+ games every seasons. Plus, If Messi were to continue playing with this explosive pace today or even a few years back, he would have for sure ended his career much quicker, either from aging or injuries (trust me no good defender would let their opponent dribbles passed them inact or unharm lol)
Nowadays he uses his brain more...
