    The amount of versatility in the Megadrive architecture and the power that can be extracted from it never ceases to surprise me.
    I look forward to seeing the release of all these developments, and keep hoping for the day someone cracks open the 32X CD nut.

    Using "mode 1" to utilise the Mega CD hardware is such an exciting prospect. It would come in very handy for my SotN game too (extra CPU grunt, scaling, PCM sound channels etc). Do you know why using the CD CPU results in a 300% boost to the FPS? That sounds a lot, I would have expected maybe only +50%. Are both CPUs being used in tandem now, or does the MD just kick back and relax? It would be great if one day the Mega CD's mode 1 could provide a boost to any MD game, much like the PS4 Pro did for regular PS4 games, although I'm sure things aren't as simple as that.

    • @RetroSegaDev
      @RetroSegaDev  2 года назад +2

      My understanding from Sik is that he's moved the renderer to the MCD sub CPU to deal with the drawing, while the MD deals with the rest.
      He's using mode 1 with the MCD in 1M mode. In this mode the word RAM of the CD is split into two halves to enable streaming tile data.
      I talk about this in Secrets of the Sega CD part 1.

    • @RetroSegaDev
      @RetroSegaDev  2 года назад +2

      Shifting the renderer frees up a lot of CPU time I'd imagine. It's gone from 10 FPS to 30 FPS from what I gather.
      You could use it for effects but I'm not convinced the second CPU or ASIC would give you much other benefit.

    • @sikthehedgehog
      @sikthehedgehog 2 года назад +3

      Yeah, they're running in parallel. The CD CPU is _only_ running the renderer without any of the game logic etc. eating up CPU time (which is kept on the MD CPU), so the actual boost is way more than the clock speed increase would imply.

      There are many reasons, but they boil down to three:
      1) They had to adhere to deadlines.
      2) They did not have 30 years of history and investigation to draw from.
      3) The development environments are much more refined now.

    People talk about the SotN demake being difficult to make, but it's these people doing 3D stuff who are really playing on hard mode! At least the Castlevania game is 2D. Are any of the ones you feature in this video made with SGDK, or are they all using good old assembly?

    • @RetroSegaDev
      @RetroSegaDev  2 года назад

      To your credit cramming SotN into VRAM isn't an easy feat. The 3D stuff here is predominantly assembler with the exception of Erik's engine which is a hybrid mix of SGDK, custom C code and Assembly. I apologise for not featuring your work yet! I felt you didn't really need much of a push right now given your viewing figures are phenomenal. Also it's kinda ironic as your channel seems to be where a lot of my viewers come from 😂

    • @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials
      @PigsysRetroGameDevTutorials 2 года назад

      @@RetroSegaDev That's ok, I understand. The attention from the SotN project is something of a mixed blessing, as a part of me would have preferred to have kept more of a low profile during my "learning phase". Thankfully pretty much everyone seems on board with what I'm doing and are being very patient, so I seem to have explained my situation quite well.
      Once I get a little more experienced at youtubing and have a decent audio set-up, then I would like to do some videos similar to this one as well. I'm also going to do an FAQ video later this year. Lot's of people have been asking "Why don't you utilise the 32X/Mega CD?", but of course it's not so easy. If you don't mind, I'd like to link them to your Mega CD videos rather than try to explain it myself.
      BTW, that Resident Evil game is an SGDK one, right? I suppose isometric is just another form of 2D, so no fancy assembler stuff is required.

    • @RetroSegaDev
      @RetroSegaDev  2 года назад +1

      Sure feel free to link. Looking forward to you getting your mic setup and doing some other stuff 👍
      I have seen the resident evil game and I do think it uses the SGDK. I haven't looked to see how they're doing view wise. It got a fair bit of momentum when it was first shown.
