Hearing you on the radio this morning is what brought me here. Congrats on your accomplishments! Hope I'll be able to catch you performing downtown Montreal over the holidays, if not sooner. :)
I love the bagpipes I been playing them since I was very young. I got out of the hobby cause of a busy lifestyle. That and the wind that requires to play the pipes is hard. My drones always tune higher and never sound that beautiful like your drones. Mine are tuned to high lol. And my chanter is always flat to. I love the bagpipes and wanted to get back into playing them again.
It might be something as simple as your reed-chanter combination isn't well matched, your chanter is old (so it's at an older, flatter pitch), or your drone reeds/drones need adjusting to match the pitch of your chanter.
I struck the bag just slightly softer, which means the drones didn't get enough air pressure at the start. The challenge is to strike hard enough that the drones come in cleanly, but not so hard that the chanter sounds right away (which is nearly impossible if your reeds aren't set up properly, but that's a whole other video). I made a playlist of strike-in explanations and demonstrations, you might find these other videos helpful: ruclips.net/p/PLyGGvnTtc1aJlMrBhra4jwuGyzo0yUI-U
It really depends what you want to do with your piping... Do you have a budget for new? Used? Do you want to compete, or play in a band, or just play for yourself for fun? McCallum, Henderson, Naill, Hardie, they are all reputable and build consistently quality pipes
I notice that when you have struck in the drones you are not blowing through the E, which is contrary to what you say to do, and would have most Pipe majors tearing their hair out !
I'm late to the show but I have watched tons of bagpipe videos. This is definitely the best.
This is one of the best lessons if you want to play with a band or even start clean on a solo tunes.
Probably the best tutorial on the internet.

@@JennaBagpipes Thank you so much! I really appreciate the help. Take care.
Love from Nagaland ❤️👍
I watched your example of a good strike versus the double tone? I can’t distinguish what you did differently. Can you please explain?

I’m interested in learning to play the bagpipes. What great quality brand do you recommend. I want a quality I can grow into.
