The gussets for the front laptop compartment are there to prevent that front lid from falling all the way to the ground when that compartment is fully zipped open. You might have delicate items packed on that lid and it would be bad if the lid hit the ground. Or if those items fell out due to any impact forces if that lid hit the ground.
Imo soft carry-on's are generally better. They're lightly and the walls are thinner so you can pack more and it's easier to put them in overhead storage bins. For check-in hard shell is best as you can't guarantee how softly (or hardly) they'll be handled.

Yup, agree as well.
And you have outside accessible pockets on soft ones so easy to store fluids so they can check it's not terrorist fluid. Sigh
Harder to clean, not great if you end up needing to check, less able to repel bed bugs, water soaks through.
