I have one question. My lesson horse that I ride has a habit of not staying in the trot. I have to keep my leg on him to stay in the trot. He does this when I’m on and when my trainers on. Do you any tips on breaking his habit?

Grace Arrowood is the horse checked up on vitamin levels? B vitamin for horses often gives them an energy kick. U can get it as a syrup. A horse that cant keep the trot sounds like its in vitamin deficiency, specially B vitamin 😊 the horse could also be tight in the muscles and therefore stop because its more comfortable to walk than trot. Is the saddle fitting correctly? It could be many many stuff, also just a bad habbit. When i rode a horse who did this it was because it was used to the rider giving up, which ment less work, so using a small jumping whip and just rest it on the shoulders snd tickle with it sometimes plus hard leg work was all it took for this one. Using sounds to gear the horse up and using ur legs every 3-5 second is ok as long as its small gentle kicks and again rest the whip on the shoulder. 😊

I do not know much about riding - why do you have to change sides?

Mary Fyke because the whip always has to be in the hand that is closer to the center of the arena u ride in. So if u go clock wise in a circle, u gotta hold the whip on the right hand. Theres a lot about this but one reason is that if u ride with a dressage whip as in this video, u could end up touching the wall or fence on the arena and spook the horse, and also if two people are riding in the same arena but different directions, one clock wise the other counter clock wise and both hold the whip in the right hand, the one goin counter clock wise have to pass the one goin clock wise by riding around them as they come towards each other and a whip in the wrong hand could spook the horse goin clock wise. I dont know if that at all made sense? 😊

My teacher kept telling at me because I kept on forgetting to switch the side of the whip, it was really off putting considering i had never used one before. 😩😭

Love you advice (mostly), but pointing out that changing the whip as you described will not earn any good points with the judges in SaddleSeat competition.
