Normandie is quite possibly the greatest ocean liner ever built! Cutting-edge technology for the 1930's; the ship's turbo-electric propulsion system, the hull design, the propeller design even the design of the funnels. All of the deck machinery was hidden and provided for beautiful wide open decks. (Compare her design to the Queen Mary and you can see how the QM looked very old fashioned next to the Normandie.) The split uptakes that provided the wide open spaces are another great innovation. Normandie was the first ship to have air conditioning (although it was only limited to the massive First Class Dining Room). She was also the first ship to have a movie theater which could also be used for stage performances. The interior design of all public spaces in all three classes was absolutely stunning. I would gladly have traveled not only in first class, but even in second and third class on Normandie since the lesser classes actually had prettier public spaces than what many ships had for first class at the time! It had a very sophisticated fire suppression system as well; had it been active on the day the fire occurred, Normandie would have survived with minimal damage. The loss of this liner as a converted troopship probably helped prolong the length of World War II. She would have probably had a long postwar career as well; like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, she would have continued on as a passenger liner well into the 1960's. Perhaps the citizens of France would have rallied to preserve her once she retired and made her into a museum ship like the Queen Mary eventually became. All just speculation of course, but she deserved much better than the ultimate fate she ended up with thanks to bad decision making during the troopship conversion on that fateful day of February 9, 1942. At least a large amount of interior fittings and furniture survived and can be seen from time-to-time in museums and public showings.

My grandfather was born in 1928 and grew up on a farm in western NY.
He had an aunt who lived in New York City, and he told me that one day he was visiting her with his brother Rob, and she couldn't find my grandpa and uncle Rob anywhere, and ended up finding them both in a bedroom staring out the window, watching the RMS Queen Mary and SS Normandie sail down the Hudson River!
