I've been using ranger for a little bit I used to use midnight commander years back. I think besides a terminal file manager there are many different ways I do things I'll even navigate thru the files with the basic terminal commands. It's something to think about definitely wanna check out more terminal file managers something to think about for sure. Great video duder !
Ranger works perfect for me, file previews and the way is shows the previews folders are the best. It is true that image previews have issues if you change terminals, but most people only ever use one at a time.
That terminal switching thing is a good point, but I don't really understand why it works sometimes in Alacritty and sometimes it doesn't. Doesn't make any kind of sense.
@@TheLinuxCast i suppose its just different terminals have different support. You could try just switching to an image previewer that works in both terminals
I used ranger for over a year. 10 minutes after I started using nnn, I deselected from my gentoo world set Ranger altogether LMAO. I've never replaced a program to work on my computer so fast as Ranger went LOL.
I use ranger in alacritty and the image previews work just fine. No issues whatsoever! You could switch preview_images_method to ueberzug and see if it works better for you. I tried lf, nnn and others and they are generally faster than ranger but they don't have many feature as ranger. So it's ranger until further notice.
Tip: fff, the [Freak]ing Fast File Manager, can be much faster than either NNN or Ranger. The speed difference actually matters in situations such as working with virtual drives mounted with rclone. The difference between Ranger and fff in handling my own rclone mount of an important Google Drive folder is rather amazing. Everything is sluggish in Ranger, and everything snaps to attention instantly in fff. I would imagine that similar gains are to be had when working with spinning hard drives and other slow media.
Hey, noticed this comment. I moved fully to terminal based file management and use YAD to take care of the other half of file management where a GUI is thrust upon us all. I used NNN for a brief while, then found FFF and immediately switched to that. I love it. Sensible keybinds, the FFF vim plugin makes this a minimalists dream. Not a ton of features I never use so that's a plus in of itself. If we were to go smaller than FFF, I think we'd just end up using aliases and stuff to get it all done.
There is this weird thing about Linux. long time ago I wanted to browse the net and watch few movies, suddenly I found myself distrohopping and customizing Desktop Environments... Now I just want to browse files fast.... and I find myself configuring some low-level, hidden files with quite alien language and somewhat complex syntax, reading manuals and watching tutorials... I am not saying this is a bad thing, it is just that I understand why some people grow neckbeards, live in closets, put on weight, collect thinkpads, create strange online projects etc....... Linux is like Baron Munchausen, takes you to strange places....
I had some problems with ranger about all consume the ram. I found out that a problem is w3m but after watch this video I'll give an opportunity to nnn. Thanks to share your knowledge.
In ranger you can set your wallpaper by hitting the "r" key and selecting your wallpeper command. I'm not how well supported it is, but it works with feh
I think the reason why they're using env variables, is because they want to keep it simple and flexible, I just thought about it and it might be a cool idea that's worth trying. Using bash instead of whatever new config language is far more flexible, loading those variables thought might need some improvement. Thought some functionalities would need too much bash scripting, unless a boiler plate is provided.
Hi how are things. The same thing happened to me with the issue of previewing images. And I was also about to change my file manager. Until I figured out what the problem is, it's pretty simple. At the point that says set preview_images_method (in rc.conf) you have to set the default terminal you use, in my case I'm using terminology and it looks like this " set preview_images_method terminology " without the quotes and it works perfectly. Default is " w3m " . and besides, using the following item that mentions " delay " you can improve the visualization by increasing the number. I think 0.02 comes predefined. Greetings
I don't know either, but maybe NNN has lots of plugins because its missing so much, and one has to spend a lot of time setting it up, so maybe thats a negative not a positive.
No matter if you use nnn fff ranger or lf, terminal filemanagers are the best thing a modern operating system must have. This must sound strange to many users, but only those who have not tried them.
Only downside in ranger i see from video - img preview... Kinda... Is your main work is to change wallpapers? There are plenty other programs to do just that. Judging a fish by her ability to climb a tree looks lame to me...
How did you enable icons in nnn? I thought it had to be enabled when building (which is how I currently do it), but wasn't sure if you had a way to turn them on/off post-install?
I think it does have to be done while building it, but I really can't remember. There may be a way to turn them on and off with an environment variable, but I'm not sure. Best to check their docs and find out, because I can't say for sure.
im checking it out just to see what its about. im not sure the reason for ranger........when you can just cd to where u want to go and create folders and stuff it may look nice but im not sure why you need it.
A lot of things won't work now that the gui of firefox is changing a little. Idk about firefox regular edition but the developers edition has already implemented the new gui update.
I hope you see this old thing. I can't get this with nnn and image viewing to work anymore, I've tried to look for the problem the last month but no deal :( The image is always opened in FF when I push 'Enter' on that image but no sxiv viewing as I scroll thru all the images. It has worked when I saw your vid, installed it and liked it but it's been quite a while since I watched an image and most of the time I'm just too lazy to fix it or in a hurry so... Everything is up to date. This drives me crazy now when I got time for it. //Peace (DT, hope it ain't copyrighted :P)
sxiv isn't being updated anymore, so you might try neosxiv or nsxiv, that might help. My guess is that there are things that are just not compatible any longer. But that's just a guess. It's also possible that the path to the sxiv binary changed since the last time you had it installed? IDK.
OK Not updated anymore, I wonder why, the most perfect pic-viewer ever, well what I've seen anyways :P I'll check into that. Thanks :D and a lot!! for answering your older posts :) PS, how do to get these info's? reading stuff like 10h a day or a fluke that you know or..? I ain't got that much time for like anything :( My 24 hours is like 18h, work for 8(plus the time to get there and home so really 9), sleep for 6 or 7 then the rest is for my lovely Linux so not much :(
Eh? I don't know? This vid is quite old. But I've only ever used two terminal fonts, Hack Nerd Font and JetBrainsMono Nerd Font, so it will be one of those.

interesting knowing that nnn is written in C

Thank you for your introduction.

I've been using Ranger mostly. I enjoy it and it seems to work better in Alacrittty than you've experienced
I always assume when I have a problem that it's just something I'm doing wrong. Seems to be the case 90% of the time. LOL
Great video. Just did some searching, "lf File Manager" is Ranger but written in GO, so its much faster, might be a good fit for some ppl.
thanks man

I think Lf is best terminal file manager
Fzf + any file manager = speed
vifm is the best terminal file manager
Vim is a cult and impractical fight me

read the wiki: change the Makefile parameters (set icons=1) and `make` and `sudo make strip install`
i think alacritty has problems with rendering images because of some incompatibility with its hardware acceleration

Good video.
Hey not related to nnn, but how do you have the address bar on the same "row" of the tabs in firefox?
I made a video about that, though the links in that video's description may be more helpful.ruclips.net/video/aCdFs6rgeNI/видео.html

use ueberzug to preview the imgs with ranger
