Why is it I keep remembering this piece done in F?
Trying out the transposer on it... YES. I KNOW I've heard it in F!!
It was Virgil Fox who played it that way and he did it live on the Black Beauty. I remember.
I'm going to see if I can find a recording of him doing it like that. I have one cued until I finish listening to this one. It's a later recording, on the Allen touring organ. Will let you know.

So I got the story from user Shikantaza that the tuning for this piece was originally E, as a solo violin piece; when redone for organ and chamber with trumpet, it was lowered to D, very likely because the trumpets were tuned to D, so that made it easier for them to play it. Rachmaninoff resurrected the E tuning for his rendition of it on piano and it's very likely Fox followed Rachmaninoff on that.

How can one record a priceless organ in a priceless church with a great performer on a MONO Channel with 1 microphone ? Aiming the birds
The technicians from Chandos used a single microphone in the Grote Kerk of St Bavo when recording the late great Piet Kee. Smaller equipment now but the same principle.
Undoubtedly my favorite Bach work. It always excites me to hear it played well.
