      Dupre was 20 Century French, Bach was 17th Century German , Musical Worlds & Organ designs apart, however both are "Great" in their own ("genre") right & appreciation of each is a personal musical emotion!

    I love the metre of this version. It allows the big pipes of the bass to get fully resonating throughout the venue and then the decaying resonance adds a legato like effect absent from many of the version played at a faster pace. To me it adds majesty to this profound composition and emphasises the humble reflection of the magnificent composition of the Grand Master. Just can’t stop playing it.

    Maestro Olivier Penin presents a beautifully graceful performance! Like most of Bach's works, I interpreter this organ Sinfonia Cantata as the exploration of the unknown when one takes new challenges. One can observe Maestro Penin the dynamic technique in his hands and feet showing vigour, expressive emotions and gracefulness. Wow, the church has an amazing acoustic environment.

My gosh how lush rich and so gracelessly played with such sharp feeling of this piece. You defiantly could sense how you were one with the music. I did catch onto that 1 or 2 sec delay. I love the way he plays it slower than most organists- it brings out the ingenuity of this amazing piece, combined with the wonderful organ that it is performed on and the perfect registration changes at the right times.

    • @patwolfie
      @patwolfie 4 года назад +11

      I second the comments approving of Mr. Penin's tempo. This sinfonia, played at presto, cannot yield its thrills in full. Allegro, at most, allows a skilled organist to keep his or her tempo constant and precise through the more difficult central passages, which contribute to the "rush" for listeners. Also, at faster tempos, the risk increases that those passages will be muddied by the "noise" of echos with a long bounce in the larger churches that possess the great organs preferred by leading professionals. This can be a factor, even if the organist can sustain note-perfect play at such a fast tempo. As At0mCollision points out, most concert-level organists do play it faster, perhaps simply because they can. Opinions vary, and I respect all informed ones, but for me, even if there were no echo noise, the speed not only adds nothing, it subtracts from this sinfonia's muscular nature, turning the steady gallop of a race horse into the flight of the bumblebees.

      Jon William I feel it to be among the more tolerable versions, but completely unexciting. Many organists are too caught in trying to “interpret” the work by using their own arrangements. This is no exception. No doubt he’s a decent organist, but he can’t keep time or a beat to save his life, nor does he pay any attention to the time signature. This was written to be a VERY fast piece, not something from the romantic period. This is the most accurate version I’ve ever heard, and is played with the original composition, not a rearrangement. ruclips.net/video/MkzFNqc-rvg/видео.html

      I just listened to Diane Bish's performance of the Sinfonia. Before explaining why I prefer Penin's, I want first to give both organists due credit. Very few human beings ever reach, as both Bish and Penin have, such a lofty pinnacle of sensorimotor skill.
      I prefer Penin's performance. He chose an allegro tempo that allowed him to play, with no appreciable change in tempo, the more challenging middle passages with the same skill and command of the notes as his opening. To my ear, Bish's presto went through a slight ritardando as she got to those middle passages, and it seemed she imposed another, more compressed slow-down shortly after that, establishing a new tempo, still fast but slower yet, as she headed to the finish line.
      While both did the typical dramatic slowdown at the end, I found Penin's to be within my acceptable zone and Bish's tipping over into melodrama---the last thing Bach's music needs. I would love, some day, to hear the sinfonia played to the end with NO slow-down, and with the final chord released after no more than an instant of extra hold. Maybe I wouldn't like it, but I'd love to hear it that way, at least once.
      At the risk of digressing, I'll note that many a performance of Bach's two great masses have been spoiled for me by the use of opera soloists rather than those trained in choraI singing to keep the vibrato in check and never scoop a note. For those who agree, I recommend the cantatas performed by the J.S. Bach Foundation (J.S. Bach-Stiftung), the ensemble's choir and orchestra ably conducted by Rudolf Lutz. Their ambitious aim is to perform all of Bach's hundreds of cantatas. The DVDs are beautifully engineered in both video and audio---high quality and worth the money. Most of the soloists are masters at singing in the clean style that best suits choral music of the Baroque era.
      Returning to Bish vs Penin, I don't know whether it is the organ Bish played or her choice of stops, but I heard an overlying sound that evoked the calliope organs to be found most readily, these days, in carousels. I can best describe it as a honking resonance---slight, but audible, that comes from differences in the metal of the pipes compared to a pipe organ. For me at least, not the right sound for Bach---from the viewpoint of one who likes most of the Swingle Singer Bach interpretations and most synthesizer renditions and eschews transcriptions for brass quartets, despite playing first chair cornet in my high school band.
